HKU Law Professor: ‘Violence not in HK’s interest’ (ft. Albert Chen) - Keybros SOFTtalk Special Ep.5

  • In this episode of SOFTtalk, we are delighted to have Professor Albert Chen (former HKU Dean of Law) explain issues ranging from the sustainability of One Country Two Systems, whether the National Security Law is compatible with common law values and human rights, how colonial restrictions on free speech compare to current regulations, and academic freedom at HKU.
    In particular, Professor Chen elucidates that academic freedom does not equate to immunity from the rule of law; instead, he encourages local students and university lecturers to exercise critical thinking and prudent judgment before engaging in illegal acts such as incitement. He also highlights the destructiveness of the violent protests throughout 2019, and calls upon Hong Kong citizens to carefully consider whether such actions are in the best interest of our city.

    喜歡兩位理性青年能清晰講述2019所謂民主運動使用暴力破壞香港是世界都不能接受的犯法行為!更感謝能請到教授講解實施國安法在憲法上理據與對保障香港市民生活的重要性!

    I heard HK students learn about the Nanjing Massacre that’s something Taiwan students should learn since Taiwan just like Mainland and other Asians throughout all of Asia were brutalized by Imperial Forces in 1920s-1940s. HK students should learn how they became a territory for the drug smugglers of the West. There was no democracy in HK in the 1800s it was just Westerners living the good life by oppressing the people of HongKong!

      Taiwan loves bootlicking both the USA and Japan. They’re super positive on Japan while they hate China and the Koreas, it’s so pathetic. A lot of Taiwanese also collaborated with Japan to slaughter southeast Asians. The collaborators were kept in power, so they still love Japan.

    I am HK-born Chinese and immigrated to the western country when I was young. In the beginning, I was supporting protests and never mention I was Chinese, only saying I am from HK. I turned back when I really saw the violence on the separatist, I really disliked it from then. Last few months, I really understood western propaganda, in the beginning, I thought it was made up of conspiracy theory but because of listening to more people, people surrounding me, and UA-camrs like you and looking at more facts in history. I really understand and with more critical thinking, I really understand it's more than deeper than what we see. I don't blame the younger generations, this is because of the lack of social experience they have and being taught having some prejudice to mainland Chinese. I just hope they understand violence and holding up the word "freedom" to breach legislation is wrongdoing.

    This was a great video. As a retired lawyer in Canada who practiced labour law I understand the tools of the British based civil law system that can be used to stem protests. Thank you for this very informative video. In Canada all our Charter rights are subject to a proportionality test that many people think has led to a very narrow interpretation of rights.

    Thanks Keybros, the higher Ed institutions in HK have been represented so badly during the riots, we really need voices like the prof here, that lets people hear another side. Your ‘law’ bits are also really informative. Always looking forward to your videos.

    Violence never solves anything. Rational minds do. HK has a opportunity to prosper, or go down a spiral of violence which will lead nowehre, but chaos. Nobody in HK wants instability, violence, mass destruction, mass disruption, to be living in fear, to have their freedom taken away from them by idiot rioters, extremists like in 2019. Nobody wants that. Nobody in any other country, would want that on their streets let alone in Hong Kong. The lengths some of these extremists are willing to go through, in order to push their political agenda, however distorted, stupid it may sound, is extensive, since these people are now getting help from the west mainly from USA via National Endowment fro Democracy. The ones who fled to USA, are now protected by the US government as political pawns against China, & are obviously conspiring with the US government, Taiwan government as well, to undermine China at all costs. They're now going all out full steam ahead with their Anti-China propaganda push in all msm, on all platforms 24/7, 365 days all year. Theres more than $500 million dollars allocated for this Anti-China propaganda campaign by USA.

    Very interesting insights. Also, another thing to add is that just because one is "pro-Beijing" or an NPC representative doesn't mean they have to always tow the "party line." I recall Prof. Chen, who, as mentioned, is at one point disagreed with an earlier version of ELAB and expressed some concerns about it with regards to the rights of people to be extradited. The notion that everyone who is "Blue" always sides with whatever the Central Government or the Chief Executive wants is highly flawed.

    Wow, great video. This actually tapped into into some factors that I considered when applying to university two years ago, around the height of the demonstrations. As a STEM student whose subject is based on facts and logic, I didn't want to include politics, and wanted to have a normal life. Are you two back in HK for the PCLL?

    I've always loved your videos, great job. I would recommend for future videos that you guys take the background music off, it is quite distracting to the interview in my opinion.

    Thank you for such an insightful video. Through the Q&A format I get to understand more about the laws in Hong Kong. Great stuff! Oh, and please keep the background music on so the video wont become too dull if we just listen to the talking. I know one viewer suggested to take background music off all future videos. Your choice of subtle and soft background music does not disrupt the video at all :-)

    violence is not in the interest of anybody, isn't that common sense

    • @Albert_Einstein_not
      @Albert_Einstein_not 2 роки тому +2

      Apparently common sense is not very common in Hong Kong. Some may argue that only a minority are violent but if the rest of Hong Kong just sat idly and allowed them to continue their shenanigans then they are just as culpable too.
