My Firestorm was doing this I have had it to the shop several times. They have checked the timing replaced the stator. Still same issue! Replaced coils still same issue carbs cleaned and fuel bladder changed still same issue. I have just run the bike with the fuel cap open and the issue has gone!. Thank you for this video I just wish I had seen this sooner new fuel cap it is
G'Day Mate, Paul from Australia here. A fellow VTR1000F owner/fan .... I have a 2004 model. A definite must is leave your original exhaust cans on and simply de -baffle .... has an AWESOME engine note and not too loud. A worthwhile improvement over spending unnecessary money on aftermarket units. Sound SUPER TOUGH without being overbearing !!! LOVE the channel and I followed your vid and cleaned up my carbs too 👌👌👌. Keep up the GREAT content. Cheers Mate.
Cheers man.... Yeh I have thought about removing the baffles maybe cutting the ends off and welding a straight perforated pipe snd wrapping them... Not sure yet... 🤔
It is so interesting that several people have questioned your demonstration in order to correct you even though what you have done has worked and worked for me. Keep up the good work man people don't understand that you are giving your time do that we can solve our problems something that we have to pay for at the dealership. Once again the replacement cap has totally solved my problem with my hawk I did not aquire it from the site you said but I think its the same one 👍
Amazing dissection of the problem, well resolved. Glad for your new feel for it’s cornering capability. Agree with your exhaust analogy, I’ll keep the goldwing ones for good will with the neighbours 👍👌
I have come across your channel by accident and absolutely love it, I am now a new subscriber to your channel. I love your Leeds/Bradford accent which only adds to the entertainment as far as I'm concerned. Great video's, great content, love it.....Keep it up.....I'm another VTR owner too. Cheers.
Oh Wow Thank you 👌🙏 my accent is a mixture of South Yorkshire and west yorkshire.... But originally I am from Barnsley.... (Slowly getting it back!).. Lots of VTR owners around but I just don't se any on the road?... Quite a rare bike to see now
Great job of diagnostics. Couple of things I’d like to point one is that thats not a vapour lock it’s actually a vacuum lock. I know it seems nit picky but there is a difference. Also get you self a mighty vac vacuum tester, its very hard to get proper vacuum sucking and on a hose. If you test how much you can pull with your mouth you’ll be surprised how low it is. Love my VTR runs like a dream with a set of 2 Brothers Carbon cans. Not sure it done it or not but do the cam chain tensioner upgrade.
Yeh the phrase may be different but there needs to be an air gap in the tank to allow air to get in... But you can draw the correct vacuum with your mouth as the bladder is only small and dosent require much...as the vaccum do send draw fuel it only opens the bladder to allow fuel to free flow it is an alternative to a stop tap.. But the diognostic worked and solved the problem 👍
Hey mate. I tbink my bike is doing the same. After 2 hours lf riding its starts to splutter. Then after a bit seems to correct. Was this issue happening all the time for you or was it after extended period of riding
@husseinsaad1381 Oh, it was actually after just a few miles ... you can always give it a try with the fuel cap open.. not with a full tank of gas, though... but it may be the same issue or you may have faulty electrical system.. regulator...battery or ignition coils
@PXCBIKES mate that was a bloody quick reply. Thanks. It definitely feels like a fuel issue. I bought the bike 2 weeks ago and it's happened twice both after more than an hour of riding. Just looses power and feels like it's bogging and it starts to splutter. Previous owner did leave the bike sitting for several months so would assume fuels not the greatest but I've filled up twice already. Wanted to ask if you know anything about unblocking vapor lines inside and outside of the tank. Will definitely try opening cap if it does happen again. Thanks!
@husseinsaad1381, if it's starved of fuel, it will just eventually lose power and only respond to gentle throttle.... eventually, just cut out, then fail to restart. If it fails to start, then just open the tank cap and start the engine.. if it starts, then it's definitely a tank vacuum lock, which means there is no air gap in the tank locking the fuel I side.. all fuel tanks should have a vent hose or vent hole that you can clear with brake cleaner or compressed air... if yours is spluttering, you could have an ignition coil or problem.
Storms don't have a pronounced top end rush anyway they're quite deceptive, you think it's not trying, then look at the speedo and do a double take lol. Don't bother with race cans, just do a bafflectomy on the standard zorsts, they sound epic and no re jetting needed. Great vid BTW, really enjoyed it. I have a silver vtr too, best colour by far.
My Storms fine but I do enjoy watching you pull one apart. Like you, I don't understand why people give them a bad rep for handling? Probably my most confidence inspiring bike. Good luck finding some good after-market pipes for an awesome soundtrack =)
On my VTR I fitted some Ohlins fork springs and I raised the forks 5mm inside the yokes. That increased the turn in. At the back I reduced the pre load to the 2nd lowest setting and screwed the rebound damping up to maximum. I'm very happy with the handling, really happy.
I remember solving this prob on my mates Yam RD 50 20 yrs ago... He would ride for a few miles, then it would 'cut out'... Release the vacuum in the petrol tank & it ran fine again.
Realy...... Yep there are many bikes out there with thus problem and its something people do not check a big clue is when you open the tank cap and you hear preasure release or air enters the tank...
Interesting video, thanks. I'm now wondering if this is why my VTR is down on power. It seems to run smoothly and pretty much okay, however it accelerates more like it makes 50bhp rather than 100bhp. I thought maybe the carbs were gummed up, but now seeing this and reading some of the other comments I'm not so sure.
Yes the fuel flow is very temperamental on these with it being a vacuum diaphragm...the beast way to test for vacuum lock or vapour lock is to run the bike with the fuel cap unlocked and not shut down. But test the vacuum diaphragm by removing it as I did
Brilliant video! I have just bought a Firestorm and having similar issue. 6500rpm it splutters and won't go past, but will if I gently accelerate, buy still not smooth. It isn't fitted with original cap, but screw on race cap with no venting that I can see. I'm really hoping this is the issue!!
I don't know where to get them but I wouldn't worry all it does is catch oil from the sump you can just put some foam in there.... As long as the crank case will vent
I think you'll find the idea is to let air INTO the tank in a one way direction, thereby preventing vapour lock, while also preventing fuel vapour to vent out to the atmosphere. I suspect your original fuel cap worked correctly before all the debris clogged the channels behind the seals.
It is the same as draining your radiator you have to open the filler cap.... The caps usually have like a. Rubber seal that should open as preasure increases.... And closes to stop evaporation.... This standard cap does not.... After clearing the debris the problem was still there.... After drilling a hole it allowed the preasure to ballance but was not enough.... And there was no rubber valve to stop evaporation.. The new cap was a different design and cured the problem also with several holes in the same place that I drilled but this had a valve installed to stop the evaporation....
Surprised that it didn't suck the tank flat. I painted a ZXR tank for someone, he put a new tank cap on it rode it somewhere, and phoned me to collect it when it died. The top of the tank had been sucked flay by the fuel tank. The little valves in the cap[breather valves] were assembled back to front! Valves were different to that cap, but that was 1990.
From what I understand the smaller hose on the bottom of the tank is the vapor vent line. It is attached to a tall tube that sits above the fuel level inside the tank. The hose can easily be plugged with dirt or water which would cause this issue. You can remove the hose to see if it clears it up but be for warned without the hose fuel could potentially Spill out onto your exhaust header which would be a very bad day. Also the tube inside the tank could be plugged with grime similar to what was found inside the cap which can be cleaned with compressed air. The Factory fuel cap I believe is supposed to be a sealed unit but it is strange that your Chinese replacement cap is vented. Interesting 🧐.
Hi believe me the vent hose was the first thing that was checked but everyone assumes this is the problem....but the preasure has to get out of the tank first to enter the vent hose it has to escape the tank cap first ....the OEM tank cap is a realy poor design and I still don't understand how the bike has done 11k miles with it ....but from my knowledge this bike has had this fault for quite sometime drilling the hole was an experiment to see the difference and it was.... the replacement cap cured the problem
There is some kind of white restrictor on the ventilation hose. Maybe it makes sense to remove it and put a larger hose directly on the fitting on the tank?
Hello, I have a problem with my vtr. Im get a new timming chain x2 and change few valve plates. After this my engine work hard and have problem with one cilinders. Where I need to look for any problem? Greetings from Poland 😊
If the cap was meant to vent then when I fit a tank bag it would seal the cap and the bike would stop. Obviously this isn't the case. I'm all for learning but I thought that the two hoses underneath were one for overflow if you over fill for example and the other is the fuel tank vent hose. You said the hose is clear but what about the spigot itself?
Yes there are vent hoses on the tanks on all tanks but the preasure has to get past the filler cap in order to exit via the hoses..... Everything was clear on this bike before I changed the cap..... I drilled the hole as an experiment to see if it cured the problem.... It did but not enough maybe a bigger hole would but then the fuel will evaporate..... So the next thing was to change the cap itself and the replacement cap had a valve right where I drilled the hole and the new cap cured the problem entirely the bike runs sweet with the replacement cap
Exactly I was also puzzled as to how it worked but mine.... Its a low milage bike with only 11kms or 6k miles... I have another standard cap that I am going to fit and see if the problem comes back 😕
I have a question sir i have a vtr 1000f too the problem is it is consuming so much fuel it starts missing in low rpm. I even cleaned its carborator , change the spark plugs but still the problem isnt going 💔can you please till me wht is wrong?
Oh send me a video on instagram ? Does the smoke clear at all ? It can be partially burned fuel due to a misfire ....or worse the head gasket.... if the head gasket was blown then it would run like crap ...over heat and pressurise the coolant tank... ...
I am Japanese. I'm riding the yellow "FIRE STORM (JH02)". There's so much technology in the tank cap. I learned a lot. thank you.
