We have these, they’re the best. You’ll eat tons of greens and never run out. Break off any leggy parts and stick the stem in the ground to root. Deadheading regularly will help them fill out.
I’m blown away by the many varieties and how I can eventually create my own. I bought a cutting for purple tree collard last year and it’s thriving ! Just bought some others you mentioned!
Years ago when we had a mild winter in zone 6 b. A kale plant grew all winter & it grew like a tree. It was 6ft. tall. Had to get a step stool to reach the top leaves. I saved those seeds for later in the spring.
Hi again, Dan. i'm wondering where you live? things don't grow like yours in my neck of Northern Michigan, my cale never gets taller than 2 feet; is it a varietal of which i might not be aware?
I really appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge. Came across your channel while researching some walking stick kale. I started my garden in the beginning of 2020 and wanted to grow things you don't really hear about like perpetual spinach, Ethiopian kale, Egyptian onions, black radish (Spicy!), honestly I could go on haha. Learned a lot from you in a short vid! You have a new subscriber.
Glad to hear you are getting some rain. This was a nice walk around the garden and very enjoyable. It was also interesting to learn about all the types of kale and collards you have growing around your garden. Have a great today! Catherine
It's amazing to learn about those plants even to see them.I have a small backyard is there anyway u could mix the seeds in one package example 2or 3 of each variety for small space gardeners like me.That would be great. How can I purchase without have to join. Please respond. Thanks
Unbelievable the amount of different plants you have. WOW! Such good information about the cross Pollination and then growing only the strongest plants from them the following year and then having them adapt to your climate. hadn’t heard that before. I live in Houston, Texas and these plants seem like the perfect ones to grow here. I’m gonna order some of your seeds
I have leggy purple tree collard tree plants. I cut the leafy section of the plant a minimum of 6 nodes that are to be put into the media that I am using. I cut the extra leaves off leaving 1-3 small leaves on top of the cutting. This was done for a couple of reasons. 1. The first was to promote new growth/leaves on the leggy stalks. 2. To propagate new plants (in hopes that they will mature by Thanksgiving and Christmas). I cut the plant at close to a 45 degree angle just above a node. From what I understand this will make the plant not only produce new growth but possibly 2 shoots. The media that I used to get these cuttings to start growing in was 3pt standard potting soil 1pt native soil and 1/3 - ½ sand. With all this being said, my question is did I do something wrong? What would you do different? Is there a way to promote leaf growth or new shoots on those leggy plants?
The garden is BEAUTIFUL! I just found and bought Dinosaur Kale plants 2 days ago at my local nursery here in NY. I would like to order Tree Collard seeds and cuttings from you. Do you have a website? Thank you for this video.
Thanks for sharing. I’m looking forward to trying to grow tree kale in NJ - I’m sure I’d need to bring it inside in the winter, but that’s okay - it will be easier to harvest for my morning smoothie!
Does blooming kill the tree collards? I have grown kale and regular collards and the plants die after setting seed This is the first year I have tree collard though. Just want to know if I should trim off any flowers if I see them till I have managed to propagate enough plants...
Nice Garden, really impressive. Where can I buy the different tree Kales/Collards seed varieties. I ordered some from eBay and Amazon, I am hoping to get a mixture of seed varieties. Can I buy them from you? or can you refer a store? I am in Texas. Keep up the good work, you garden looks awesome.
You give great tours and Greta information about the plants you are growing. How do I get some kale seed and cuttings? Would love to grow in Arizona. Keep the videos coming!
Charlie ... I'm in Tempe. I can give you a cutting of my purple tree collard. I have a few other varieties that I'm trying plus a mushroom tree and a salad tree; if/when those get bigger, I would be happy to share. Also, you can check out Project Tree Collard and Fruitwood Nursery has the rooted purple tree collard (if you don't want to root it yourself)
I wonder if it would be possible to grow tree kale in a large pot to be able to over winter in the garage, because we get very deep snow and temps sometimes below zero. I have had kale come back before, but I’m not able to count on it each year. 🤷♀️
Thanks for another inspiring vid, and you have me chomping at the bit for spring. Do you think there's any way you'd offer seeds for a dino kale in the future with international shipping? I'd love to try and grow it in Germany. I've been searching high and low for seeds, with no luck. You're the only gardener I've found that grows it.
My tree collard was my favorite thing from my garden this season. The Bay Area winter sweetened it just right!! I just bought 2 for friends. If I had to put this in a container what size would be best?
How far apart should they be planted? I'm planning on lining them up on the north fence of my front yard where they will get full sun. Thanks for sharing.
They are different than standard kale/collards. They have many types of Brassica oleracea within the DNA making them perennials that have a more vigorous growth habit.
Oh my goodness! I have callard plants and they are getting tall and looks flimsy, I am afraid it will fall flat to the grown. We have been getting weeks long rain in southern California. I didn't know they would grow into tree, where im the yarf would you recommend me moving it to? Will it die?
I would love to purchase a couple of tree collard and tree kale from you. I live in Sacramento, CA. I don’t know any nursery that sells them. Are you selling any of yours. Thank you
Could u pls...put the varieties u show....... so is easier to find these plants...... I'm in australia...... so I cnt buy stuff from u...... wish I could...... hard to find tree collards and kale here......
Owner planted a bunch of different trees here in the high Mohave desert and put 10+ inchs of large gravel around them all and the house and yard, before we moved in, and he's upset and doesn't understand why most are dead or dying after just a few years. He's lucky the pit fruit trees lasted that long.
Hi! Just saw this posts. Wierd request, but are you willing to mail clippings? I cannot find any tree collards. I am terrible at planting seeds, so that is reason why i have not ordered any. I am trying to get back to basics and grow my own food and share with others once i get good at it :( Thank you for your time. I subscribed. I am located in southern california.
Looks like a great garden but I gave up at the 7min mark waiting for you to talk about the secrets noted in your heading..... I would be proud of that garden too but I gave up on waiting what I was looking for.
Alexander P. lol thanks...... Yeah I did that a couple times then figured a little feedback may help here. If he couldnt get to it by the 7 min point I think the heading may have used a better description. Im not here to be critical just help with honest feedback from a viewer.
@Going Offgrid: Sorry if I sounded snappish. I guess I'm just so inspired by his garden I forget what the actual title was, haha! I'm turning my garden into a food forest this year after watching these vids, which also makes more sense to me than monoculture gardens (but going off-topic now). I get you though, and no offense, OK? ;)
Tree Kale & Collard info starts at 9:38. Great video by the way.
We have these, they’re the best. You’ll eat tons of greens and never run out. Break off any leggy parts and stick the stem in the ground to root. Deadheading regularly will help them fill out.
Tips start at 11:00 (great vid though and super impressive garden tour at the beginning)
I did not have big back yard like you, I planted some fruit in my back yard and in my front yard.
I’m blown away by the many varieties and how I can eventually create my own. I bought a cutting for purple tree collard last year and it’s thriving ! Just bought some others you mentioned!

I ordered the seeds for your current crop. Im gonna be open pollinating with some red Brussel sprouts.

Hi there, how do you deal with pests such as cabbage loopers? The moths are constantly laying eggs on my tiny Dino kale!

Nice setup! I can't wait to get my own chickens!!!
I've gotten very interested in these tree kale varieties so thank you for the great tour and tips. And thanks for offering up the seeds!

Hi, I'm in Oakland...when is it best to start kale and collards? Your videos are great. Thank you!
Great video! And I love the food forest! I am working on growing more perennial vegetables in our garden also!
Man send some of that rain to Texas Dan!!! Garden is looking amazing my friend👍
What’s your thought in the Russian olive for perennial nitrogen fixation?

Could you advice on the best fertilizer ratio for use with purple tree collards?
Hi! Do you have any cuttings for sale?
Do you harvest the leaves strategically to keep the tree structure or trim the bolting stems on plants that you want to grow as trees?
Very impressive fruit trees you have--I just wondering if you gave out purple collard green seeds. It's hard to find them in the store. Thanks
Thanks
Can you harvest in the summer

Thank you! Shipping seeds to Germany is not a possibility at this time. Very sorry. All the best with your garden. Cheers!
@Plant Abundance: I understand. And thanks, best with your garden too! :)
Where's the seed source?
Does the. Tree Kale taste like the greens. Does it require cool weather? Matt
My tree collard was my favorite thing from my garden this season. The Bay Area winter sweetened it just right!! I just bought 2 for friends. If I had to put this in a container what size would be best?
Yummmmmmy👍😉❤️❤️❤️❤️
Amazing tree collards! Is that a Madrone tree growing next to them? THanks!
How far apart should they be planted? I'm planning on lining them up on the north fence of my front yard where they will get full sun. Thanks for sharing.
Where in Bay Area are you? I'm in San Jose, and have been growing tropical plants for years now. I recommend you try them.
Which kale has the mildest taste?
Please let me know when your offering up the tree collards. I had 2 one died. Um struggling to keep the 2nd one alive.
are the tree kale and tree collards the same as regular kale/collards or are they a different plant?
They are different than standard kale/collards. They have many types of Brassica oleracea within the DNA making them perennials that have a more vigorous growth habit.

Hello I would love some seeds for kale and collards
are you going to be selling any of your tree kale variety rootings/cuttings?
Do you ever got a powdery mildew on your collards? I'm in SF Bay Area too.
Do you have any tree collard seeds..?
Would it be possible to get some tree collard seeds from you?
Where is a great place to buy the tree kale / collards or seeds?
I'm curious why many leaves are not picked off them because you have been eating them. They are incredibly nutritious.
I would love to purchase a couple of tree collard and tree kale from you. I live in Sacramento, CA. I don’t know any nursery that sells them. Are you selling any of yours. Thank you
I want to buy some green tree collards and Merritt kale. Do you have any?

How can I get my tree collards to grow faster. This is the first year for them
Owner planted a bunch of different trees here in the high Mohave desert and put 10+ inchs of large gravel around them all and the house and yard, before we moved in, and he's upset and doesn't understand why most are dead or dying after just a few years. He's lucky the pit fruit trees lasted that long.
Please sell me more cuttings of your tree collards green and purple!!! I tried sharing it and bottom line was robbed of them!
Wish I had just a couple of inches of your soil. Then I'd use teas.
Still a few feet of snow on the lawn... this is a nice lil escape
Are you selling any?
Hi, I've been trying to get cuttings or seeds of Tree Collards, can you recommend someone?
I waste nothing=even the stalks I peel then cut in small pieces steam and put real butter salt and pepper on them---yummy.
the amount of adds put me of to watch it
Looks like a great garden but I gave up at the 7min mark waiting for you to talk about the secrets noted in your heading..... I would be proud of that garden too but I gave up on waiting what I was looking for.
Sorry to hear that.
Why not just skip ahead in the vid then?
