- Welcome the crazy rich Philippines. This is BGC (Bonifacio Global City) aka known as the most modern city in the Philippines, some even say that BGC can rival any modern city in the world, and I must say, that might be true. Now, I don't fancy places like this too much, but I do tend to enjoy myself as the food, although pricey, is very delicious! Customer service at BGC is "hit or miss". Most of the visitors in BGC Philippines are foreigners, expats, and the upper proud filipinos who are considered the wealthy. Don't get me wrong, everyone of any class can visit BGC, but NOT everyone can afford the real experience of dining and shopping like the super rich. The restaurants and shopping areas are priced similar to what you would find out west, or any rich country that comes to the top of your head. I love the restaurants, and that's the only reason why I should visit. BGC is super clean and very beautiful, it would be nice if they would implement the same practices with the rest of the Philippines, because for me, outside of BGC is where you will see the real Philippines (my opinion of course), enjoy!

If it were not for the people, you would have no clue that this was shot in the Philippines. This is what it would look like if you filmed certain parts of Tokyo, but you first removed all the Japanese people and replaced them with Filipinos. I’m not sure how long it will remain this pristine however before the inevitable chronic state of decay and disrepair sets in that you see in 99.99999 percent of the populated areas in the Philippines. Anyway, in many ways this city is really kind of a facade - kind of in the same way that Boracay is. From the nice beach front hotels in Boracay, you do not really feel like you are in the Philippines but then you cut through one of those alleyways back to the main road and you suddenly emerge back in the real Philippines with ramshackle rusted out shacks and a general state of decay. Speaking of Boracay I actually really miss the days when the boats dropped you directly onto the beach with your luggage rather than taking you to the pier and having you catch ground transportation from there.

A little correction, BGC is not a city, only a district (a mega district maybe if you can call it that). Taguig is the city where BGC is in.
I relocated from Australia to the Philippines about 6 years ago and despite the pandemic I have seen the average Filipino increase their wealth. Children born now have much higher expectations and they will never slip into the poverty of their say grandparents. Yes there are many millions still living in poverty but as they say Rome wasn't built in a day. I have always been amazed at how hard Filipinos work and how happy most seem to be. Yes I understand there is a lot of corruption, but it's the same the world over. For working people life isn’t really better in Australia, or the US, or Europe.

Sometimes it ain't about wealth! It comes down to the little things that soothes the heart and soul! Australia is a great country, however - I did see people tend to keep to themselves and it feels very isolated. When I'm in the Philippines for work or visits - I often miss the smiles, laughter and my feelings of happiness and less stress. I look forward to visiting the Philippines and chill out!
The richest in the Philippines are those living in the posh residences/ private subdivisions in Alabang, QC Makati, etc. They are Filipinos who own the house and lot, with condos as additional investment.
As someone who grew up in Makati, that's what I think too. Most in BGC are middle to upper middle class, and expats, digital nomads, and foreigners. The old money and ultra wealthy in the Philippines still live in the traditional "rich" neighbourhoods of Alabang, Dasma, Forbes, etc, and their historical homes throughout the Philippines.

@@yella_c2 BGC was just a part of McKinley Fort - a US military fort reservation to cater to the US military presence in Asia ready in the event of any war. It was renamed fort Bonifacio when the US turned over to the Philippines. The government sold part of the fort to become what it is today.
It's amazing to see BGC can compete with wealthiest cities but I hope they can continously revive the old manila architecture esp in Manila city areas like Intramuros where we have a lof of history. Remember Manila used to look almost the same as Paris back in the day.

I believe the Philippines was once an asian powerhouse before and completely turned itself around into poverty thanks to corrupt people in power. Politics in the Philippines looks more like "same, same but different". Until all Filipinos improve on their living standards and income, then you can truly say it is able to compete with the wealthiest cities in the world. 1st world and 3rd world... there is a difference. Where is the Philippines now in its "world" economic status? 1st or 3rd?

@@nicanorbadal689 South Korea looked up to the Philippines in the 60s! Philippines is no where near South Korea in terms socio-economics status. Philippines is 3rd world and is considered a developing country. The problem with the Philippines is that it has no pride! It is not the responsibility of other nations to defend the Philippines. It is for the patriotic Filipinos to protect their homeland and its sovereignty. Where is the Filipino pride then? Don't worry about the American politics... America will do ok regardless of what negative propaganda others are exposed to. The educated American will have the ability to make a huge difference in their lives by living and working hard given the opportunities this great nation of the USA can offer its people.
I just wish that the wealth spreads out more throughout the Philippines, or at least, if most of Metro Manila looks like this. Hoping for the continued growth and prosperity of the Philippines.

The poor openly refuse to stop mass-producing poverty babies long enough to get their crap together and get on their feet. They instead blame everyone from government to white people and even Asians for not doing more to provide for them. That's the difference. The rich ones almost never have more than two kids, and focus on building their lives before having babies.
The rich ones get on their feet and get careers going before having kids. The poor ones start having babies as soon as there's grass on the field, and keeps having them without a care in the world while blaming everyone else for not doing more to provide for them. It's the exact same scenario found globally across all cultures and races.
I've been paying attention to Thailand. I think the Philippines approach to heavy income is better. Let me explain.
Thailand is getting mass tourism and permanent residents. The income isn't localized. It's all over the country. And what is happening is that cost of living is out of control. The birthrate is negative now because children are unaffordable.
But if you localize the foreigners and rich to very small areas like BGC, it preserves the economy of the locals. It may seem better to circulate the wealth to the locals like in Thailand but it cannot be too much too fast. You can see many protests like in Barcelona all throughout the world because of destroyed economies.
The only cost of living increases I've seen for the average Filipinos are the standard inflation costs (which are relatively low compared to most of the world in the first place). I think the government actually does a few things right.

I’m unimpressed by the appearance of wealth. I have lived abroad for 45 years since age 9 and when I visit relatives in the Philippines I can’t help but feel sorry for the underprivileged. These people deserve so much more from the government and elected officials, but they seem to be happy or just settle with the crumbs given to them. Yet the corruption in all levels of government is glaringly obvious. I hope that one day government corruption will be eliminated, but somehow I don’t think that I will see that happen in this lifetime.
The Government can't help or fix laziness, 67% of Filipinos hate squatters, for good reason.
@@JeremiahHexxSquatters exist in the Phillipines due to a lack of social support, discrimination and lack of opportunities in the country. I think it is a very heartless comment to say that the government hates them when they have been elected to represent the people but clearly fail in their duties. It seems to me that most politicians are only in it to enrich themselves rather than improving the country for everyone.
Thank you for the excellent comment. Will the Marcos and the Aquinos crime families ever distribute their ill-gotten wealth? I doubt it. These are "display cities." Most third world countries have one. It shows the world that the country has the appearance of prosperity while the vast majority of the population languish in poverty. Even the U.S.A. is becoming like this.
And cities like Manila surpassed New York City in opulence years ago. New York looks like (and is) a dump compared to the glitzier parts of Manila. The only thing "high" in New York ( and the rest of the U.S.) are the rents from greedy, blood-sucking landlords.

Hello my Vietnamese friend. I'm a Filipino - I have visited and fell in love with Hue, Nha Trang, and Da Nang. Nha Trang is my favorite beach city in the world - a nice city with surprisingly clean beach, great hotels, beach-side skyscrapers, coffee shops, and of course, the best seafood (and cheap) in the world.
Most of what you see here are middle class. Work- rest- family time is quite balanced here in the Philippines. Weekends are usually spent with the family. Going out, eating together. And on Sundays, going to church as a family (as 80% belong to the Roman Catholic religion)
I'll be in the Philippines this November, I've always been interested in the BGC. After watching this video I think that time has come for me to visit there. Thanks for the content ❤

This place looks so DIFFERENT holy shiiii, the roads and buildings and even how the people are dressed looks so different from my baranggay LOL, they even have trees and plants everywhere! I hope one day I get to live there
I wish my country would expand and balance its economy to spread this environment throughout the whole land. Then we would not be looked down on as a third world country. We were once prosperous but the countless years of colonization, and political divide between the people and financial interests have caused the economy of the Philippines to become unbalanced and lacking for its people. I wish I will live to see the day when the Philippines will rise back up, but sadly, I don’t think it will happen in my lifetime. 100 years from now I wish for our country to meet this level across all cities.

Normaly Manila is safe but BGC is super safe, BGC offers same as Singapore but cheaper.
Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video. I was in that area of Manila in April of 2024. It’s a very safe area with lots of security in the malls and shops. The people are very nice and most everyone speaks English. You won’t see drug addicts or alcoholics and very few people smoke cigarettes. The people work hard for low pay but are quite happy and healthy. The wealthy people are the store owners.

I got a feeling that many places in Japan now has cheaper restaurant food than can be found in BGC-Japan yen continues to decline vs USD including PHP

BGC (Bonifacio Global City) is a rich folk's ghetto, a bubble. Like Beverly Hills maybe.
BGC used to be a military camp (Fort Bonifacio) so it was designed to have only a few entry and exit points.
It's for people with cars in a country where few of the minions who keep the ghetto running can afford cars.
Go to the Upper West side in NY.
You'll see how the rich folks live.

I’ve been to the RP many times. It’s a country whose people still believe in the great spirit, a people with a fighting spirit. A country with large numbers of young, college educated, hard working people who have through hard work, improved their quality of life. For themselves and their people. People who have successfully crushed Al Qaeda, and Abu Sayyaf, in the southern islands of the archipelago.
Like the other commenter said, it’s just a bubble. Go few blocks down and you will see a huge contrast. It’s impressive nevertheless.
Not that clean, and the whole city stinks of sewer. Air and water pollution is bad. Walkways are uneven and prone to ankle injury. We Lived here 2+ years and it’s over rated.

BGC means BONIFACIO GLOBAL CITY before mckinley fort establish there was a camp name to our very own filipino heroes andres bonifacio.
There is also Greenhills, Greenbelt, Roxas Blvd, etc. BGC is just one amongst many.
Been to all of those places, they all have similarities absolutely.

I have been to the Philippines and it would be so nice to see if the whole country is redeveloped to make their cities to 1st world standards. Showcasing specific cities shows what can be done given that investors are willing to take the risk of investing in such projects. Perhaps the government can start by making the country more enticing for FDI and stop themselves from getting kickbacks. What is so sad is that Intel has left the Philippines as it found the government and local government were all doing their undoing by placing too many red tapes and dishonest workers at the plant. South Korea once looked at the Philippines as an example where it wanted to be before corruption drove the Philippines to where it is now. What can the Philippines do to entice foreign manufacturers/assemblers and FDI?

This isn't a crazy rich neighborhood, and definitely not the only rich neighborhood around. It may be a business and commercial district so prices are kinda bloated especially real estate. However, the country's rich doesn't reside here. Philippines' rich families live in secluded and exclusive villages and developments. They tend to isolate themselves from the masses. BGC is not a place like that because everyone can just go there whenever.
Also, rich families often times live in their mansions in different provinces in the Philippines while having hectares and hectares of land.

@@KryptoTrekker There are posh shops in Makati, Rockwell, Greenhills, Araneta City and Eastwood City. These pocket upscale developments that are similar to BGC are older than BGC and are the go-to for the rich population for quite sometime. Now, the younger rich population tend to go to BGC, McKinley and Ayala Alabang after their development.

So walkable,modern and clean I was working there before, my previous company was in the 29th floor of Uptown mall but I'm now in Negros for good. My vibe is rural.

I love Makati Greenbelt. That area is nice.
Its nice there but personally I like walking thru Tondo. This place here lacks the friendly culture that I remember of the Philippines. In Tondo, the average person can meet and greet and talk so much more easily. At night, its fun to see all the young peeps come out and mingle and the street food culture is something else. Very fun. Thats the word= fun. I used to visit Tondo alot and make friends there that remember me every year. I visited alot of gyms there to lift and workout and made alot of friends. It was very memorable. Happy and fun are the words I use to describe most of the Philippines. Crowded? Absolutely. So much so that you could end up alone amoung millions, but it would still be hard to be lonely because of the culture there.
I'm going to have to look up my friends who retired to the Phillipines.
Thanks for this video. Last we visited the Phils, this area wasn't even a thought yet. At the time, only half of the original Fort Andres Bonifacio was "privatized." IF we ever visit again, I hope to see BGC for myself + hopefully the rest of the country will be cleaner as well 🤞🤞🤞 a long time ago, 40-50yrs, we lived in a place called "Forbes Park" and Fort Bonifacio was our "neighbor". From what I remember, it was cleaner & less crowded back then. BUT there was always traffic whenever we went to Quezon City. It was aggravating BUT the school our parents wanted us to attend was located there. Supposedly it was one of the best, newer private schools, so we braved the daily traffic. Funny thing is, when we came back to America, our parents had no problem sending us back to public schools 😆😆😆
BGC is where Fort Bonifacio used to stand. If you're American it used to be Fort McKinley during WW2. Going to Forbes from New Manila, we would use Fort Bonifacio as the short cut and you connect to McKinley Road which is the main road dividing North Forbes from South Forbes.
Great walk through! And high quality picture well done! I am moving there in a year and having a hard time deciding where to live. I’m not a city boy! But after this video I realized I don’t have to commit to living somewhere like here in the U.S. I can live in BGC for a month and have a blast but a month later can do the same in the next destination.

Modern architecture is only for the rich. Such shiny glass houses can only be built in Manila, Cebu and Davao. The rest of the Philippines should build more modestly in traditional architecture. A combination of colonial style like Vigan in smaller towns, Bahay kubos in the villages - all with modern solutions and amenities.
No, they are just middle to upper middle class. The rich Filipinos are those living in (house and lot) posh subdivisions in Makati, Alabang, and QC.
The funny thing is that places like BGC are populated by mostly middle-class/income-earners - it's still a place marketed for mass consumption and appeal. It's basically just Madison and Fifth on a lower, more local scale.
The truly, 'crazy' rich people of the Philippines will never want to be caught dead here. Exclusivity, wealth gap and powerful connections mark the extremely wealthy.

Am I supposed to be impressed, that it isn't dirty and ridden with wall to wall cars and peddlers like the rest of the city? It looks like any other big city I've been to. I am glad Manila has a nice clean, organized spot for people to safely walk, shop and hang out. It wasn't always so.
Even though it has "City" in its name, it is not a city. It's only a district within Taguig CITY.
It is good to see all the faces of Philipines. BGC compite with other cities like Bangkok. This brings tourists, creates job, get better $ to people I did enjoy this walk.

BGC is a city (ward) inside metro Manila. It is not possible to compare with Bangkok, which is a metro like Manila.
Yes bgc is not the crazy rich part...it is just the newest and so most modern. But Makati is probably richer. The people in the large subdivisions, not just Forbes, Dasma but also Bel Air, San Lorenzo, Ayala Alabang, La Vista, Corinthian, Greenmeadows, Loyola Grand Villas, Valle Verde to name a few. Many who live in these subdivisions own condos in bgc for their kids, for rental income etc

If it was prepandemic it would be so cool to do a tour of BF Homes Paranaque. It's not recovered yet, though. It used to be the best place in the South of Manila.

Outside this complex are slums.😂I've been to BGC many times.It's owned by a Chinese immigrant.It doesnt signify any economic prosperity of the Philippine society as a whole.
BGC is actually owned by Ayala, one of the oldest conglomerates in the Philippines, and their heritage is Filipino.

Public transport is everywhere, but can take awhile sometimes especially parts of Manila where the population is very dense! I recommend the ride hailing apps to get around =) Move it for mototaxi, or Grab from car taxi. Enjoy!
It seems to me that the people in Tondo are more cheerful and happy than this wealthy place .
That's their way to suppress their real feelings. It's a cultural thing. My wife told me so. They are capable of laughter and a big smile while deep inside being sad and depressed.
Also, wealth is not necessarily connected with happiness.
Im filipino both rich and poor are very cheerful, keep laughing while sicializing orher people family and friends.

100% agree, but one thing that I love about BGC is the food, and no matter how good the food might be outside of these places, it's very difficult to find the high quality. I much prefer home cooked meals in the province over dining, that is when I buy the groceries =). You have to really know where to eat in the Philippines, not all carinderias are amazing, I'm sure you know that already =)
@@DimitriTheBarbarian Yep, very typical of big city business districts all around the world. When I travel, I like visiting medium-sized cities to small towns cause you really get to feel the local culture and people tend to be more warm and welcoming. It's nice to visit ultra modern business districts to get the amenities and see the huge concentration of wealth, but not for me. Whenever I visit the Philippines, I actually prefer Makati more than BGC.

As much as I love Filipino people, at least by western standards - which I now know are deeply falling apart lately, I don't see how you can think comparing BGC as 1st rate. Yes it has skyscrapers and some luxury stores, with everything priced up, so only certain class of people can live there. But look at the sidewalk. It is literally like out of horror movie, so uneven, and even the ramps, for disabled people. And that's the core streets, what about if you walk 10min outside of it? You guys need to keep fighting local politicians. Select correct LOCAL person, so he does stuff right locally, and passes on your feedback higher up, then change can happen. Put all that money into your bottom tier. Growth will be slow, but after a generation or so your bottom floor will not be eating pagpag, or all those worse things going on. Enable everyone to be an inventor, creator, like in china. Produce stuff. Be nice to your neighbour countries, instead of distant colonisers, even as a westerner I can tell what's going on with you, US, and China. You guys need to introduce politics talk during drinks with friends, enlighten each other and families. I just don't see the point of BGC or Makati, I rather see 20 neighbourhoods to be refurbished - with new jobs and living places. I would then get to see your genuine culture in more homey and relaxed environment were you feel like can be yourselves, not living in a hut, or pretending to be american in bgc cosplay streets. Idk. I mean no offence by it. I just mean you guys are so much more than what your politicians doing now. You don't need skyscrapers to attract tourists, culture experience much more important and what foreigners love Philippines for. Find a way to modernise it, by engaging your bottom ground where the most of it is preserved most likely, and lift them up together.

Anywhere in the world there are gaps between the rich and the poor. Even powerful countries have problems with corruption, homelessness, horrible crimes and d**gs. Seeing this part of the Philippines compared to what we always see as "poor Philippines" and being shown all over the world and being called as " third world country" or "developing country" , BGC and MAKATI are areas to be very proud of....meaning it can be done. To the neighboring cities better clean up you act in governing your cities.
I'd rather live in the Provence than live in sky rises. The city doesn't feel right to me.

One of the problems here in the Philippines is the high standard of employment. In order to be a waitress, you need to have a degree and all of these requirements while the salary is very low.
