  • If I had a dollar for every time someone inquired why anyone needs to film in 8k, I'd be rich! Here's a prime example. When filming nature 99% of the time you cannot move closer to your subject. This requires a large lens. For birds, most photographers shoot with 600mm or higher lenses.
In this particular case I was using the Nikon Z9 with the 800mm PF lens and even that didn't get me as close to the Baltimore Oriole nest as I would like. The beauty of the Nikon Z9 (and Z8 too) is the ability to record in 8k, 60fps raw.
This clip (recorded in 8k) has been "zoomed in" to show how the 8k resolution provides plenty of room to crop the video clip down to 4k. Without any meaningful degradation, this clip was cropped to show the Baltimore Oriole nest in all of its glory.
The final outcome is a 4k timeline which is more than enough resolution to show the details of the nest. The footage was also recorded at 60 fps and slowed 40%. Audio will sound distorted due to the slo-motion nature of the clip.
In this clip the male arrives first at the nest with a caterpillar. The chicks struggle to down the rather large caterpillar but eventually it gets swallowed. After the male leaves, the female arrived with a smaller caterpillar and is quickly gulped down. She then waits for one of the chicks to expel a fecal sack and she then flies away with the sack.
Fun times right from our front yard!

So very intesting Alan. Such a strange looking nest but it must keep the chicks safe. Mighty big catepillar for those little beaks. I think the eagles feed smaller portions! Beautiful photography. National Geographic should hire your!

I'll go get a bigger worm and see if you can keep it down. Nice video Alan. Keep up the good work.
