    Canon just hit a home run. This is the lens almost all pro photographers who shoot events, weddings, portraits, gr. seniors, etc. will want. Amateur video users will jump on it too. But for still pro photographers this is a lens we all wished we had a long time ago. Kudos Canon.

      @@haubertynot really. The only difference between an amateur photographer and a professional photographer is that one earns money from their craft while the other does not. There are plenty of professional or semi-pro photographers that would not be able to afford this either. The Pro versus amateur thing has nothing to do with price.

    I love my 28-70 f2 but this new lens is very tempting. 70mm has always felt short for portraits, and reaching 105mm means you don't need a standalone 85mm or 100mm. And 24mm makes a world of difference when shooting indoors.

    THE DREAM LENS IS HERE! So jealous of Canon / RF mount owners. Hope this puts pressure on Sony to make one ASAP. The fact it has IS, Par-focal, servo zoom ability, internally zooming, 82mm front, lens foot, lockable and smooth iris, all in one lens is so perfect.

      I'd love to see a Sony version. I imagine it's a hard lens to make though!
      And RF mount does have some advantages and a wider opening when compared to E mount. E mount actually only just covers a full frame sensor. So it might not be technically possible to design this kind of lens for E mount... just speculating there though! Who knows... I didn't think this one was possible either!

    With introduction of Cinema EOS C400, it would be useful to have an in depth review on the servo attachments available for this lens. Also, now that digital corrections are effectively part of lens designs, it would be useful to note how digital corrections are implemented for native applications like the C400, and for 3rd party uses like the Komodo-X and V-Raptor X.

    One thing to keep in mind for the zoom module attachment even though there's no substantial grip to it that is akin to shoulder mounted operations. Anyone familiar with the ENG world would have a camera rigged for their shoulder with their hand on the zoom module perfectly which is the point of that module on any lens. For a DSLR style body that isn't on your shoulder, not as useful.

    • @carlyates2487
      @carlyates2487 Рік тому

      There is a big difference in how wide 24mm is compared to 35mm which makes this lens much more useful as an all-purpose zoom than the Tamron and Samyang 35-150mm's. Those are fantastic value for money though!

      @@carlyates2487 I agree, also depends on the use and gear you have. For example I shoot studio portraits with it and lifestyle products. Rarely go below 50 but need the compression. Wow very interesting. I bought a used CN-E 18-80 for a decent price not that long ago to adapt on my C70, and I was actually incredibly impressed with the image. It is noticeably more sophisticated than the 24-105ii with better sharpness and contrast. I will definitely be considering this RF 2.8 as a potential replacement though, even if I have to have something else to account for the wider end of things since the C70 is S35.

  • @TheTechnoPilot
    @TheTechnoPilot Рік тому +3

    The servo unit is just what really lets this down. I’m so disappointed as you rightly pointed out that it doesn’t have a proper handle with a large zoom rocker! Also as CVP pointed out, it’s quite overpriced when the 18-80’s servo which had the rocker was only £450. This really leaves it unusable for proper shoulder operation unless Canon finally competes with Nikon’s remote grip and gives us a remote rosette mountable grip with zoom rocker for the R5C.
    I think my only other fault is that both the focus and zoom should have had a proper full 0.8 pitch gear ring integrated for when we want to use external controls in a video workflow and can’t just use the zoom and focus demands.

    • @carlyates2487
      @carlyates2487 Рік тому

      Yes I was a bit disappointed when I first saw the details on the servo grip to be honest. But in some workflows it will work well, and I definitely agree it is priced too high.

    • @CaseyPreston
      @CaseyPreston Рік тому

      The CN-E compact servo zooms came with this servo unit already attached. The servo grip was just an add on and I’m sure you can use the same servo grip with the 24-105. You just have to buy the servo grip separately for the 24-105mm whether than it being included with the lens.

    There is an optional lens support, LH-E1, to use with 15mm LWS rods. However, it's not clear whether this is used with a standard lens support generally available from several manufacturers, or whether Canon will have a proprietary 15mm support.

    • @carlyates2487

It's very nice to have such a focal range at f2.8 meaning this lens could replace several others, but not on a gimbal. You can't have everything, 105 mm at f2.8 is going to be biggish, frankly I'm surprised it is not bigger. One very big advantage though is the fixed physical length, a big help if you run to a really big cinematic style gimbal rig.

    The problem is, Canon just missed the time to release decent RF video cameras. There are only the C70 and the R5c, no other video camera from Canon has a RF mount.
    Thesis also the reason, why we switched to Sony. They have a larger lens selection with lots of third party manufacturers, that use the E-Mount. I think, it will take over 5 years to get anywhere, where Sony already is.

      @@Digi20 True! I still have the 1998 Tamron EF 28-105 f/2.8 lens and have mounted it on my Canon R5 and no way at any range would that be acceptable to today's standards. I never sold it because once the Canon 5D Mk III came out, it was unusable! It was fine using the 5D. Now with the R5, it's a paperweight on my self.

The product you are reviewing is either completely or partially out of focus for long stretches.
