- In this video, we're going to discuss the character Taven and why he's considered one of the most underrated characters in Mortal Kombat.The truth about Taven.
Fun Fact: Taven is the only kombatant in Amageddon that defeated Blaze in two different endings. He defeats Blaze both his arcade ending and in the main story ending.
Wasn't Shao Kahn who did it canonically? Or he just stole the power?

Canonically, Shao Kahn's arcade ending was the one that Dark Raiden used the Time Medallion in MK9 to prevent. Shao Kahn became unstoppable when he received Blaze's power instead of Taven, and would've proceeded to merge all Realms and go mad when he runs out of enemies.

Taven defeated Kabal, Sektor, Rain, Sub Zero, Noob Saibot, Fujin, Kintaro, Drahmin, Reiko, Goro, Raiden, Scorpion, Daegon and Blaze - canonically, all of them were high tier characters in OG timeline. Yet some people say that eternal jobbers like Erron Black are much better than him. It's ridiculous.
Only real gripe with Taven could be that he is naive, but guy literally woke up after thousands of years in a world completely different to his own. He even refused to believe that his brother turned evil, poor bastard.
Gotta respect Taven for surviving the story when he woke up in time to see everything escalating to armageddon.

It’s worse when UA-camrs or websites advertise them as fully disposable rather then tell folks useful information or give them a fair chance there isn't even any constructed critism for how to update them ideas. I don’t mean all of them but fans especially newer NRS fans for this series don't get very useful facts on these characters so they go based on biased opinions and declare them as irredeemable failures that have nothing to work with and jump to conclusions. when stuff like this proves there's worth in them bringing back these 3D characters so what if there under developed. why's that a valid reason not to include them in future MK entries and simply update them, Because most of the popular NRS reps also fall under that criteria so are they also irredeemable as well simply for being underdeveloped if not then isn't that hypocritical to give them a free pass but not the 2000 era 3D reps?.

There’s no shame in Fujin losing to Taven who’s like a Hercules kind of dude for the MK series but an empowered Shinnok losing to the school girl rookie Cassie Cage pretty easily...now that is pretty humiliating & hard for me not to see as just bad writing no offense to Cassie she's alright in my book.
Taven is a beast, always was.
He is a character with the most legit wins against creditable foes, and definitely might be one of the strongest characters in the Mortal Kombat lore.

Imagine there’s a new MK live action movie in 2023 that’s in the works and it’s about Taven’s Story in Armageddon (with a good writer and a passionate director).

One can only dream I would LOVE to see a story of Taven but with the current writers we’d get a abhorrent disgrace they can’t even give Legacy kharacters right let alone underrated or under appreciated like Taven, Shujinko, Daegon, Onaga.

Originally Taven succeeded until NRS retconned it to Shao Kahn. Rain's ending in MK11 is non canon and in Armageddon Taven defeated him 1v1 so Rain is weaker than Taven

MK8 was actually Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe.
I agree with everything else, additionally I love MKD’s Chess Kombat. Creative and fun, would’ve been sweet if it had been its own side game released at the same time as Armageddon.

The reason why people hate Taven is because he is not another ninja. You got a bunch of 12 year olds drooling over Rain, another demi god who has done vastly less then Taven.
Hell yeah great vid Taven is my favorite Kharacter in all of MK dare I say that Konquest Mode was super fun reminiscent of a 3D Beat Em Up like Fist Of The North Star Lost Paradise and Tekken 6 Scenario Campaign I LOVE gameplay like that nothing to take away from the classics in Streets Of Rage, Double Dragon and Final Fight I LOVE the founders of Beat Em Ups the best but scroll around 3Ds give me the same sensation. Anyways yeah it was Taven that defeated Blaze in my eyes and the true canon was suppose to be and was the last man standing at Pyramid of Argus not what that garbage shit arse lore desecrating retcon by nrs in MK9 had you believe being not Shao Kahn not Dark Raiden whom is good Raiden for some reason as Shao Kahn was flown into the distance by Onaga whom prolly killed him cause he has no chance against Onaga and Dark Raiden was struggling with Shinnok’s clone in the intro so nrs showed what incompetent writers they were from that intro alone then it got progressively worst during the end of MK2 and MK3 segements. Anyways back to Taven the real MVP this guy beat Kabal, Sektor, Sonya, Rain, fought Sub Zero to a draw, beat Noob and Smoke, Fujin, Mavado, Sheeva, Kintaro, Havik, Goro, Reiko, Dark Raiden, Scorpion dude was invincible and he went on to defeat Daegon and Blaze one of the most powerful kharacters in the entire series up there with Shujinko, Daegon, Blaze, Onaga, Shinnok, Raiden, Liu Kang. People say he’s stupid, generic, boring? I found nothing boring about the Kharacter the way the story is you can get back and feel for him relate to his loss and frustration he goes through total hell through the quest lost his family and still pressed forward had some funny dialogue with Sonya, Frost, and Goro dunno about the stupid part since he’s been asleep for ages along with Daegon there is many reasons why this is my favorite kharacter and will back up all the way and appreciate this vid, he doesn’t get as much hate as Shujinko dunno why people hate on Shujinko but like him he deserves respect with both kharacters having epik Lore cemented in history, impressive feats that topple 90% of the cast easily and you played through the BEST in both Konquest Modes with both of them to this day I don’t know witch Konquest I like better Armageddon or Deception they both are great and unique in their own ways.
Fun fact: If you complete all the monolith challenges in MKA’s Konquest as well as the main story, Taven ends up fighting and defeating every single boss and sub-boss in the entire game (He fights Moloch and Motaro in the Netherrealm monolith and fights Shao Kahn in the Outworld monolith) except for Onaga.

Something that Shujinko and Taven have over Kotal Khan is that neither were jobbers they won most of there fights. What has he achieved in the MK-X & 11/Aftermath story modes beyond being a punching bag which sucks because this guy is a boss in the MK-X comics. & even other cool characters like Erron Black and Kano haven’t won a single fight in the NRS story modes

I think the word your looking for is a Gary Stu which is the male version of that word. But in Taven’s defense he’s more experienced than Cassie is and yet she can take down an empowered Shinnok for whatever reason by her self despite being a rookie we’re as he’s probably got years of training under his belt similar to Lui Kang.
He's a demigod for the Elder Gods' sakes, of course he's that powerful. But in his defense, he trains throughout the campaign in the obelisks so of course he isn't channeling some ass-pull like what Mary "Rey" Sue did in the Disney Trilogy.
Taven was underrated. His quips (“My death? Or Yours?” “Oh, now I’m free to go? After I’ve already defeated your entire clan!” “Get away from him, lizard!” to quote a few), his power, his story, his personality (snarky and confident), it all made him awesome. Not bland or boring, just cool.

My favorite hero in MK, the only thing "bland" about him was his default costume. His 2nd costume is good.
I really like how at the end of the Konquest mode, he refuses to kill his evil brother and just wants everything to be over. That's some solid character building there.

The original winner of Armageddon. He done a lot more like ending the Tenkunin, helped Sub Zero to defeat Noob, bested Dark Raiden, brought down the Red Dragon, avenged his parents by defeating his brother Daegon and won and prevented Armageddon from happening. Taven deserves a lot of respect since he's one of the strongest character in Mortal Kombat and have multiple feats and accomplishments.
Always love his interaction with Sub Zero. Him and Shujinko were probably the 'only' friends he made through the entire story
he attempted to prevent armageddon but it sadly failed, as when he beat blaze, the power he was supposed to get (either stripping powers from all kombatants or killing them all) split into all of the fighters and made them all even more powerful. of course, in mk9 it looks like this still ended up happening but taven was nowhere to be seen. i guess ed boon really doesnt like taven.

After Armageddon I thought Taven would be the main character of Mortal Kombat, it's just FRUSTRATING how they made this epic character that is a demigod just to be tossed away to never be seen again.
I love the direction of MK Deception and Armageddon story lines these two games got me back into MK, because of these two characters. Respects to Taven and Shujinko this kept the game and lore fresh!

Also, his encounter with Mileena was hilarious, especially the “Not bad. Care to dance?” line and him wondering “Who was that strange creature?”
Personally I like Taven a fair bit I just wish he had more flare in terms of personality, design and abilities. His lore is great and he doesn't belong in the same tier as Kobra or Kira with that said.
Give him an ability or a weapon specialized for him, give him a minor makeover and put an emphasis on what its like for Taven to become the next guardian of Edenia.
That would take him from a pretty good character to a fantastic one.
Hmm, personally I could see an updated Taven having his dragon motif, blessed armor and his drakesword emphasized a bit more.
For one, give him a full set of armor other than just the torso piece that has a golden dragon aesthetic to it, with some adornments that have symbols pertaining to either Orin or even one of Delia’s, for she was the one who made the arm, a helmet that could resemble Orin (inspired by Guts’s own helmet looking wolf-like), and perhaps even a cape just because it could look cool on him, basically having him look like a knight since there’s not really many armored characters in MK besides Hotaru, who’s moreso a mixture of a knight and a samurai. As for his sword, I don’t think you’d need to change much, but perhaps it could be made a bit bigger, at least around the same size as a claymore sword to emphasize this man’s godly strength.
As for personality, we can keep what he has for now, being snarky and confident yet unknowing and even a bit impatient. To add a bit more flair to that however, perhaps that confidence could be heightened a bit to where it goes along the lines of arrogance, having him be a fearless warrior who will gladly show you his strength, being a bit showboaty, which can be partly from his godly lineage (which where Rain probably gets his attitude from). I think this could be a good way to flair up his personality because not only is it more defined, but it can also be a useful tool to show how Taven has changed around the end, beginning as a confident warrior to now being a broken man from all that has happened to him and his close ones.
As for abilities, although he has fire abilities, something that’s not really that unique in the MK universe, I think we could utilize his fire magic to have it be more of a tool to enhance himself and his attacks. He has that entrance animation where he comes out of a portal and does a landing punch to the ground. That could be one of his moves, but he could have an enhanced version where it crates a strong explosion of flames. Another example for some abilities is that he could have an ability similar to that fireball move he has, but instead its a frontal projectile made from a flaming slash of the drakesword, something like Cloud’s neutral special from Super Smash Bros. The regular one could stagger the opponents and burn them, but the enhanced version (which could have a visual detail of the sword heating up and turning hot orange) could have him create a faster and more powerful projectile that explodes on impact and launches the opponent back.
Those are my two cents on how Taven could be updated to have a bit more to him, or at least what I can come up with, but I’m always interested to see what others can come up with.

I always found calling Taven and Shujinko bad characters an absurd thing, they both did great adventures across the realms, defeated some of the best kombatants in the entire franchise and their existence was important to the plot and people still call them bad and generic, are you sure you played Mortal Kombat Deception and Armageddon before?
I did, and you are correct about that. Daegon was also important as he founded the Red Dragon Clan, which was so crucial in the two previous games. In my mind, I can’t call any of them bad, Taven and Daegon make my top 30 characters and Shujinko is in my top 10 characters.
Being important to the plot doesn't mean a character is good by default. That's some elementary level logic. I played the hell out of those games and I can't recall a single interesting thing about Taven or Shujinko

He may not have been the most likable main character but he was like an Edenian version of Liu Kang every fell before him with even Shinnok in surprise of his abilities. His mom was a powerful edenian sorceress and his dad was the main gods of Edenia who is also the father of Rain. I remember back in the day before MK X came out every lost I came across they said he was the strongest mk character under The One being with Liu Kang behind him but this was before fire god liu Kang

MK has definitely lost something it once had....the darker touch to the games. Felt like the last good game was MK9....the most recent two games felt too Hollywoodised, if thats a even a word.

Just a question for clarification -- isn't the defeat of Raiden by Taven null since, at the very least, Taven doesn't end up preventing Armageddon? Mind you, Raiden fails miserably at this too, but it's hard to determine what is canonically relevant in Konquest or not. Either Raiden gets back up (like a champ) and attempts to thwart Shao Kahn because he is a pathological liar, or something in the interim between his defeat and the actual end of the timeline occurs that we can't decipher.
In the same game we see Raiden fighting for the good side ate the pyramid so yes he failed to stop Taven ending his deal with Shao Khan

No they didn't retcon it. Taven actually did defeat Blaze but made everyone else stronger as an unforseen result. Says Taven tried to fight off everyone to hold off Armageddon. From MK9s intro it seems that he was defeated by Shao Kahn, Raiden or maybe both then Shao Kahn killed Raiden to become last man standing, therefore adding everyones power to his as its implied that the power can be taken by killing another.

I liked his quest with Shinnock where he thinks he’s an ally.
Taven is one of the best characters in the OG games. He is better than a majority of Midway era characters, honestly.
Also one of the most powerful characters in the entire series:
1) clapped Goro, MK CHAMPION
2) defeated Noob Saibot, who previously defeated Goro
3) won against Raiden and Fujin, both gods
4) fought non-stop small armies and other fighters, from regular humans, like Kabal, to demigods, like Daegon
5) defeated everyone who tried to stop him from killing Blaze on a Pyramide of Argus
6) killed Blaze
Unlike NRS characters, his power level is consistent. He would've wiped the floor with NRS Liu Kang and Cassie no problem
People who hate him probably think that the absolute dumbass that is NRS Shao Kahn is a good character, lol
Taven lore and strength wise is a badass my main gripe with taven is his design.

Why Taven went MIA (Missing In Action) in the NRS Era was truly Disrespectful besides Easter Eggs and Cameos, also Hated the fact they Retcon the Ending of MK: Armageddon of Taven winning and beating Blaze by having Shao Kahn be the one in MK9,
I kinda get this was during Midway Games verge of Bankruptcy and the Declining of the MK Franchise's grim Fate only while to being purchased by WB establishing NRS by Rebooting (mostly) the MK series and saved the Franchise, but that doesn't Excuse of how they completely mistreated the MK I.P.
I will never forgot how in Don Critic's video. He had Taven ranked at 91 out of 99. While having Ferra Tor ranked at 81.
ANNNNND he defeated all those characters and clan, in one single day. Let’s go, Taven!!

I was just watching a video about Taven the other day and thought damn it would be nice to bring him back into the Modern MK. Thank you for putting respect on his name!
I really hope taven returns the same as shujinko because he’s underrated and the last time we saw him was in Mk Armageddon but we never see him in the new games with the new timeline.
The only times we saw him were in endings where he got clapped. The disrespect...
