I use a US Plan as well for the Build, but I've tabled changes. You can use Aluminium-tubes instead of Wood-planks, but the Size must be the same. The thickness of the tubes can be determined by 3d construction tests for the forces that you have to do when submitting the plans. (Page 8.2)

i thought Pietenpol was made out of wood?
Yes, but there is also a Steel-Aluminium Version in the Construction-Plans.
What plans are you using? the US plans do show a steel fuselage version, but there is no version with aluminum tail surfaces.
