  • Thomas the Tank Engine has spent many years running his branch line and knows every part of it by heart. One day, when his driver jokes that Thomas could manage running the line without him, Thomas takes the joke seriously and becomes conceited. Later at the sheds, he brags to Percy and Toby that he does not need a driver anymore. Both engines disagree with this as they would never even consider running without their drivers, but Thomas insists he is not afraid to run by himself and is willing to prove it.
The next morning, the firelighter comes and starts up the engines' fires. Thomas drowses comfortably as the warmth spreads through his boiler. Percy and Toby are still fast asleep, so Thomas decides to take the opportunity to run by himself and prove them wrong. Thomas slowly starts moving along the track, unaware that he was only moving due to a careless cleaner meddling with his controls. Thomas soon finds out his mistake as he tries in vain to stop or "wheesh" as planned but he can't and he just keeps rolling down the line. Sitting at the end of the siding ahead of him is the stationmaster's house, where he and his family are just about to eat their breakfast. Unable to stop, Thomas shuts his eyes tight and runs right through the fence, hedges and crashes into the front of the house, causing it to move violently back with major damage to the structure, broken glass tingling and plaster covering everything. The stationmaster is furious and so to was his wife, who scolds the tank engine for ruining their breakfast. She then storms out of the dining room, slamming the door in a fit of rage, which causes more plaster to fall and cover Thomas. Thomas is left feeling very depressed.
Soon, workmen arrive and prop up the house with strong poles and they lay temporary rails through the garden too. In no time, Donald and Douglas arrive, and together, they pull Thomas clear of the house and back onto the rails, revealing his front to be badly twisted from the impact with bits of fencing, a bush and broken window frame decorating his front. The twins find Thomas' appearance funny and sent off back to the yards. Thomas is left at the crash sight, feeling very embarrassed and is now in disgrace.
Back at the sheds, Sir Topham Hatt scolds Thomas for his recklessness and informs the tank engine that he is sending him to the Works to be mended; which will take a long time. Sir Topham Hatt also reveals that, in Thomas' absence, a diesel railcar will be brought in to do his branch line work. Thomas is shocked at hearing this, but Sir Topham Hatt concludes that "diesels always stay in their sheds until they are wanted and that they never gallivant off to breakfast in stationmasters' houses."
