White is needed because even though Trent plays rb, there’s a chance he starts in the midfield so if Walker gets suspended or injured, then you can swap Walker with White and keep Trent pulling the strings in the midfield
@@paulcasey4282Colwill is too young, and his inexperience has shown this season at times. Gomez doesn’t have the ceiling Colwill has, but he has more experience and is less prone to commit rookie mistakes. Both Colwill and Gomez should be part of the squad though

Can't tell if this video was a your squad or what you think Gareth will pick. Title says one thing, but the tiers and half the narrative around certain players at times when putting them into those tiers was "Gareth won't pick him" (like JWP in no chance) and then on other occasions it was "this is my squad, this is what I'd take".

Curtis Jones is brilliant footballer, he isnt a DM but a box to box player who can press, tackle, dribble, pass and score.
He played as a 6 in the the u21 euros and was probably the best player in the competition ahead of Palmer and Gordon. He's done it for Liverpool too. He's 6'1, strong and quick its not like he's not physically capable as a back up option.

The disrespect that Gomez gets is frightening. The guy has been a member of a Liverpool team that has been in the top 3 of the PL for most of the season. He's played as a right back, left back and centre back, and hardly put a foot wrong. Even had a game as a 6! He's not the best in class at any of the positions, but his versatility and consistency make him an absolute "must be on the plane" for me.

This would work too! Matter of fact that's a better idea than having White fill in at 6. Having said that White should 100% be in over both Gomez and Dunk. He's just more versatile, a better footballer technically, and has a flair for shit-housery that could be really really useful.

In football terms it is objectively insane not to take him, he shines in a defence that contains the best defender on the face of the planet, and his work ethic is off the charts when there's absolutely no reason it should be. When all your defenders are done at the end of the tournament (which has been the case for the last at least 4 major England tournaments) and you want somebody solid you can put in there and you don't have Joe Gomez ready and raring to go, that's the point you realise you've made a mistake.

Gomez has been playing inverted, but he's also been playing as the actual 6 in recent weeks. So yes, he can play the 6.

He is undoubtedly a player who can excel along the backline and that's where he should, and will, play. No, he's not England's number 6. And I never said he is. I was referring specifically to what James Saud, and certainly not in an angry, ridiculing, or dismissive manner. So not sure why the temperature needs to be raised or the tone turned sour over a hypothetical list and a response in good faith to an inaccuracy. In any case, I think you can see we mainly agree.

Chilwell and Shaw are actual LBs, not CBs inverting which isn't a system Southgate is going to bother with anyway. You take both and hope that one will be fit.

@@KillerDarc Shaw and Chilwell have been injured, they both start for their teams when fit. Gomez has been playing because of Robertson's injuries. He's not a better out and out LB than Robertson. He doesn't offer anywhere near as much going forward as Chilwell or Shaw who whilst both injury prone are still good LBs.

The beauty of shaw and Trent in the back 4 is that shaw can slot into a back three nicely and offer pace against a counter and let TAA roam into midfield. I think it’s the key against some bigger teams we’ll come across and to push players like Bellingham up the field with kane

Stones can move into midfield much better than Trent can. So you would want better defensive fullbacks.

Don’t mean to sound biased as I’m a Villa fan but Ezri Konsa is so so underrated. His stats overall are better than the large majority of centre backs in Europe’s top 5 leagues this season let alone just other English centre backs. Being a Villa fan I’ve watched his consistency for years now he barely ever puts a foot wrong for us & he’s seemed to grow into a good leader too especially since Mings got injured & we needed someone to keep that leadership at the back. He can comfortably play at right back too as he’s shown this season from playing a decent amount of games there. He has to be in the squad for me.

Joe Gomez can play LITERALLY everywhere in the back 4, sometimes even help out in the midfield. That guy is a monster, and he's having an immense season right now too. He absolutely should be on the plane
I always end up with a mish mash of what I'd pick and what will be picked when I do these. As the tournament gets closer the games to try players out run out so I'm more interested in what will be picked now. I don't think White gets in after whatever fallout happened the last time. I suspect Sterling has had some bust up there too.

Curious to know what your starting midfield 3 would be with your squad? I don't think it's gonna be particularly balanced with foden or madison partnering bellingham and starting gallagher just isn't going to win a euros. Unless trents in midfield. I think jones in for gallagher provides a better option as someone who can go both ways

A man city-style system plays to England's attacking strengths. 3 at the back with an inverted full back playing a duel role. Pickford, Walker, Stones, Gomes, B white, Rice, foden, Bellingham, Maddison, Saka, Kane. Ben white, Stones or Trent could slot in as the inverted full back . Every one of those players is on good form and plays regularly for a top four team (apart from Pickford).

Trying to remove my Liverpool bias but it must be impossible cuz I can’t believe none of Harvey Elliott, Curtis jones or Joe Gomez make it. They’ve all been so important for us this season. But I do understand we have so much talent to choose from.
Elliot doesn't get close. There are simply better or more on form players than him currently inhis position. Jones should go over Henderson and Philips but I think the likes of Barkley and Gallagher have also been having really good seasons and arguably better than Jones.

@@NewscorpPhoneHackingDepartment I disagree, Gallagher has been Chelsea' best player other than Ole Palmer and scored some huge goals as well as carrying 250 million pounds Enzo and Caicedo at times. Barkley has carried a poor Luton team and been their best player by far.
Jones has also had a good season but those two, particularly Gallagher have had slightly better seasons.

Kobbie is a diamond and I wish ETH would play him deeper for us than he currently is. He’s only 18 so obviously he does struggle a little with physicality when it’s put on him. If you play him as a single pivot, he needs that protective foil against a physical team from an inverted FB or a CB
I think he just looks a touch slow to cover ground rn. I think it improves as he gets a bit older but im more worried about him being asked to cover lots of space than his physicality.

There is a reason Mainoo has skipped the U21s. His tallent level is miles ahead of Jones.

Having Gomez and Walker as Fullbacks would allow Stones do his Libero thing and step into midfield, pushing Trent into a more Box-to-Box role, while Bellingham can play in his Real Madrid role basically switching between being a CM and a second striker. But that's just the "what would i do" fantasy, not my prediction on what is Southgate gonna do.

For me this is the easiest England selection ever. You pick an 8 out of JWP Gallagher Jones, use your preferred bias to pick a 4th CB, and let shaw and chilwell race through the terminal on crutches 🩼 to decide who goes and who stays.

This is one of the few intelligent England fan takes I’ve seen, in that you realise that at least 8 of the starting XI will rightly start. But (even as a West Ham fan) I do not want JWP near the squad. What if we don’t get any corners? That’s all he’s good for.
@@ukevo To be honest in a midfield of Rice and Bellingham I just want someone who will enable others, be calm, and be another leader on the pitch to help direct a fairly youthful team. For me i'm not sure i'd trust the erratic nature of gallagher in a high stakes/intensity match. I also like Jones a lot but I personally don't know if i've seen him sacrifice in the same way jwp does. Interested as to who you'd want us to take for that 8 spot as you said, it's one of the only spots that I think doesn't pick itself.
Jones does sacrifice for Liverpool and plays connecting/defensive role a lot. He is the one of the best dribblers/ ball keepers among these midfielders. England has to beat France to win Euro, so you guys need to pick players who can defend Mbappé.

As a Liverpool fan, I don't want Joe Gomez anywhere near the England squad.
He can play centre-half, both full back roles and, in recent weeks, has started in the 6 in three matches.
I want him fit for the rest of ths season for Liverpool.
Ben White do that Gomez's role since last season, even more complex for playing as inverted fullback and back three and he's originally no.6. 😂😂

gomez just is more versatile than ben white, gomez can play more comfortably at left back than white while being just as good at centre back and right back while having more pace, and he has actually played 6, only agaisnt prague and southampton however is shows he can do it
But White is a starter in his position for his team, Gomez isn’t even if he’s having a good season. And white is versatile, realistically the versatility won’t be required bar maybe 1 game if we’ve qualified already.
I love this video everytie you make it but it does kinda feel conflicted. On one hand you're speaking about your squad, but the tier list is setup in a way where you're also making predictions on Southgate's squad becuase it has language of "Should be fine". This leads to, in my opinion, you conflating the two and the list. For example, Branthwaite is not in your team is in "No chance". Trippier you said is not in your team, but is in "Should be Fine" because you think he should be fine for Southgate's team. It leads to a little bit of confusion, for me at least.
I think it would be helpful if you did the tier list part saying "Here is what I think Southgate will do. I think this player gets on the plane. I think this player has no chance, etc. realistically" and then do the analysis of your squad on the pitch without the tier list.
Not at least considering taking Loftus cheek is crazy. He can play as the 6 and has played most of his career as an 8. He has just added goals this year. Can play anywhere on the field aswell not even joking, has played just about everywhere for chelsea including cb and striker.

I agree. Will never happen but Kane slows everything down. Despite all the goals there's a reason Spurs have got better since he left and Bayern have gotten worse since he arrived.
Someone not being mentioned a lot so far is Rico Lewis, highly regarded by Pep, playing minutes for City, very versatile can play both sides at full back as well as being very capable in midfield. Plus hes one for the future, giving him minutes now could be crucial down the road at future tournaments. He would be a very clever option in my opinion.
He's playing just as much as Mainoo except he's actually in a good team.
Might be a bit biased as a Rangers fan, but do you think Jack Butland deserves a shout for the England squad? He's been incredible for us this year. I know the Scottish Premier League isn't exactly top 5, but good saves are good saves no matter the level, and he's made plenty.
A back 3 is what I keep going to. For example: Walker, Stones, Colwill, Trent, Trippier, Rice, Bellingham, Foden, Saka, Kane.
In transition Bellingham will maraud forward and Stones can move up to midfield with Rice. Trent would have a lot of attacking freedom and could go absolutely anywhere on the pitch because Walker can cover him and if not Walker you have Ben White, two perfect CB/RB hybrids. Colwill can cover the left but I'd also throw in Shaw for that position too, anytime he played as a CB last season he was excellent and that was even in a 2-man pairing, in a 3-man he'd be even better. The two attacking mids/wide attackers could be any of Saka, Palmer, Foden, Grealish, Gordon or Maddison. Even Watkins could play there as a support striker.
Lots of defensive solidity that gives attackers more freedom to attack. This is what actually wins tournaments. Look at Spain 2010 and Brazil 2002 for great examples

I recon you put Foden on the left, Madders/Gallagher as the 10 and for the extra midfielder you play Ward Prowse for the depth. So starting Rice, Bellingham and Maddison in midfield with Foden at LW. You get more depth too with JWP, Gallagher and Mainoo.
then you leave Grealish at home because you need that in behind option in Rashford.

If I were the gaffer I would have taken four goalkeepers to these friendlies with one being obviously Pickford followed by Sam Johnstone both these are playing regularly and will be part of my goalkeeping unit for the Euros. The other two will be Ramsdale and Butland. I will play them in one friendly each to see who performs better and take them to the Euros

Wow, so much to discuss here. It is always going to be a dichotomy between what we would do, and what we think Southgate will do (keeping in mind that Southgate often does something unexpected whilst also doing things many people don't want.
So Goalkeepers, I would go for Ramsdale's lack of match time over Pope's lack of match fitness. Therefore Pickford, Johnstone, Ramsdale.
Defenders : Walker picks himself as does Stones. Whilst I would want Ben White, I don't for a second believe that Southgate does. My problem with Maguire is that he simply isn't good enough against world class strikers, and we need someone who will compete with them. He has never played below his ability for England, but I think we need something more agile and ... better. I would take Marc Guehi, Fikayo Tomori, Lewis Dunk, and Joe Gomez. If Reece James is fit he would be my number 2 right back and similarly you can't leave Ben Chillwell and Luke Shaw out, if they are fit. Gomez provides the cover if anyone picks up a knock.
Midfield is a conundrum for all the reasons you identified. I would therefore primarily see Trent as a Midfield player, and my ideal 3 man midfield would be Trent, Rice and Bellingham. That will terrify every other team. My primary backup to Rice would be John Stones which is why I want 5 central defenders and the potential to bring Trent back into Right Back if necessary. Personally I think Ward-Prowse has to go. He provides too much to leave at home. He would be my fourth midfielder ahead of both Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson. Mainoo looks good, but I don't think this is his time yet.
Once we start to look at attackers we have more talent than we have places. Saka Foden and Madison provide creativity in every area and have to go. On the left and as good as the other players in contention are, you can't ignore Grealish and Rashford and they would complete my creative attacking 5.
That leaves 2 places left, Kane is one, and nobody has come close to Ollie Watkins for the other, so that is my 23.
So Pope or Ramsdale = Ramsdale
Gallagher or Trent = Trent
Maguire or Tomori = Tomori
Colwill or Gomez = Gomez
For an 11 in the final I would want Pickford, - Walker, Stones, Guehi, Shaw - Trent, Rice, Bellingham, Maddison, Saka - Kane
