Lol... when you said “people flocked to digital music stores” I just imagined a million people buying killing in the name in boxers and a wife beater and spongebob slippers while on the shitter.
That year was the year I was exposed to this gem of a song. TO THIS DAY: I will periodically play it, at home or driving in the car and that crescendo of distilled rage at the outro just resonates with my soul. My body is charged up with adrenaline and excitement and angst and I feel invincible like I can run through walls after that song. And that's part of the magic of music. Many songs have done that to me over the years. And this is a prime example.
Especially when he just shouts MUTHA FUCKAAAA!!! Oh good god. It's not the words it's the tone and the pure grit and range in how it explodes. Similar to Slipknot's pulse of the maggots "WHOS WITH USSSS". Hard to put into words bit there's certain parts of certain songs that just hit the soul. These vocalists can reach out and touch the pain and anger in us listeners and that's what keeps us coming back and listening....
I have no clue how I missed the 2009 stuff. Hadn't heard about any of this, but it's amazing. The band was banned from Saturday Night Live in the 1990's after refusing to remove an upside down American flag that was on an amp. They only played their first song and they cancelled the second each musical guest usually plays. I would've been more surprised if he hadn't sworn on the bbc.
Wait a minute, I've already seen this video, or at least this exact story in video format. Is it a re-upload? Edit: I found the video I was thinking about, it was from the channel 'Today I Found Out' that was uploaded a week ago. Edit 2: this video is a fuckton better.. Nay, it's a metric fuckton better.
"Individual people" don't have that power. They have to work together to have that power. Solidarity and mass action, not individual action is what puts us on the same level of power as the monolithic organizations that run things.
The ability of sales charts to produce this kind of unintuitive result is endlessly fascinating, to me at least. (As is how they're struggling to adapt to a streaming era with various algorithms of how to equate a play with a sale)
Hi Polyphonic, great video (I'll be honest I'm typing as it's playing but I know it'll be great anyway). Can you please do another Springsteen video? Anyway have a great xmas if you see this😊👍
Ergh. I hated Shayne Ward. The worst was when he has a wax figure at Tussauds for his brief success. I bet that waste of wax and fibreglass is in storage.
Don't be taken in by this "fight the power" bit. People are looking back at this with rose-tinted glasses. Simon Cowell loved every second of this given that the RATM was released on the same parent label as his X-Factor winners. He played everyone like a fiddle to get double the sales for half the effort. The X-Factor winner didn't sell any less copies because of the competition. In fact they sold more than usual. And then he played everyone again by making out that Susan Boyle was some big surprise thing. And every single one of you was taken in by it.
Hard to believe since RATM is with epic records & revelation records. Both of them being american labels and RATM being very strict with how epic uses their stuff and revelation being an independent label. Simon Cowell's X Factor is with Syco's Music which you guessed it, is a british record label. Epic and Syco did have a joint signing but that's with Camila Cabello (from Fifth Harmony).
I think the whole idea wasn't about money as much as it was awareness and just getting some real music back into the #1 spot at Christmas. If it was about making Simon broke, it would've lasted a lot longer and centered around a band that couldn't make him money.
@@insekki Yes but Sony only got co-ownership of Syco at 2010. RATM top the charts at Christmas 2009. If anything it was Sony who loved every second of it, not Simon.

I never watch the sponsor gumpf at the end of these videos, but I do always watch to see how they are brought in.
We should do this again today but now for the purpose of the lyrics 🤘🏿🤘🏻
The segway into that Audible add was worth a like by itself.
did??? did we just get rickrolled in December 2019?
I'm afraid so.
Yes............yes we did
yes... true 2010s experience
The last time I was this early, Rage Against The Machine took the Christmas #1
I have no clue how I missed the 2009 stuff. Hadn't heard about any of this, but it's amazing. The band was banned from Saturday Night Live in the 1990's after refusing to remove an upside down American flag that was on an amp. They only played their first song and they cancelled the second each musical guest usually plays. I would've been more surprised if he hadn't sworn on the bbc.
Dude you have the most ridiculously smooth transitions to your ads. Like it’s scary sometimes.
If you’re after amazing ad segues, go watch some Legal Eagle. Best ad segues on UA-cam.
Love the vid man, one of my favourite bands of all time ;)
1. Sleep Now In The Fire
2. How I Could Just Kill A Man
3. Roll Right
4. Bulls on Parade
5. Down Rodeo
6. Killing in the Name
Please talk about how All I Want for Christmas is You topped the Billboard Hot 100 this year! It deserves to be made!
I loved your other one and feel there's loads of stuff to talk about e.g Nebraska, The River album or most likely the album Born in the USA. If not I understand but it'd be a cool idea. Anyway have a great xmas if you see this😊👍
I hope he hearts ur comment
I mean, when it comes to swerves using Rage Against the Machine to advertise Audible certainly is one.
Let's get this #1 for 2020 again.
I actually arranged a christmas carol version of this song… CHRISTMAS IN THE NAME… and it kicks bells!
Me English person..."dis gon be gud"
I seen one account post a vid about this last week now everybody gotta do the same video 😂😂 gotta love UA-cam’s original content creators
Have some rest! You are great. I really enjoy every week. :) Happy whatever you do these days haha
you should do more videos on RATM. Truly a band which expresses the power of music and lyrics. Maybe do a series covering their albums?
The current Xmas single should be Jarvis Cocker's "Cunts Are Still Running The World".
Segue of champions at the end of this video! Good work!
I’ve never been so proud of my country than when we did this
A great video about a great event. I'm proud to say I bought the song.
Oh hey I just wrote about this in my Protest Music class 🙃
The 2008 banking crisis sent us english lot on mad 1 we needed it.
Mate, 10 years?!? It's crazy when you start to remember huge acts of history
can't believe i just heard the words "shayne ward" on a polyphonic video
Ergh. I hated Shayne Ward. The worst was when he has a wax figure at Tussauds for his brief success. I bet that waste of wax and fibreglass is in storage.
I rode around my bicycle today with Vietnow on my speaker. THE LOOKS I GOT.
Guess London doesn't like "Fear is your only God"
Best Christmas Ever
I’m proud to say When I turned 18 my first tattoo was
F.Y.I.W.D.W.Y.T.M!!!
Killing in the Name is the ultimate Christmas song, hands down
Please do a video on *Jeff Buckley.*
Not please he better do a video on him. It's long overdue
Mauro Ermitano Syco and Epic are both owned by Sony
I think the whole idea wasn't about money as much as it was awareness and just getting some real music back into the #1 spot at Christmas. If it was about making Simon broke, it would've lasted a lot longer and centered around a band that couldn't make him money.
@@insekki Yes but Sony only got co-ownership of Syco at 2010. RATM top the charts at Christmas 2009. If anything it was Sony who loved every second of it, not Simon.
AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU WAS TAKEN IN BY IT!! LARGGHGHGHGHGHGHHGGH!!
Rage Against the Machine is NOT corporate media-approved music. That's just one more reason to support this band and their endeavors.
You guys have got to do brothers in arm. That song is gass
Do one on jack stauber i love his psychedelic sound
Fantastic video, but should have at least mentioned the fantastic free concert RATM had in London as a thank you to their fans afterwards
Love this video - great moment in British musical history
Well that factoid, may change you completely, now, you will know that was the sales and units was only taking place from 13-19th December only, if you can remember, from 20th December countdown Only For Radio 1, As Christmas Day and 1st Day of Christmas is the 25th December, As UK Charts for Christmas is always Before Christmas Day Data, and never include it, and who was #1 on 27th December for the Christmas Week it was Joe McElderry With The Climb, conspiracy is real, as it didn't really get UK Christmas Week #'1, Rage was #1 for one week from 13-19th December only from your Sales/Units, From the 27th December weekly edition the climb from Joe went up to #1, and was Officially the Top song in Christmas week, from 20th to 26th December sales.
Hey Polyphonic, I was wondering if you could do a video about Coldplay ? Great videos keep up the good work! 👍✌️
Phantastic post. Thanks.
Time to do it again! Let's get this to #1 in America for Fourth of July!
11/10 Closing segué into the sponsor spot haha
