  • “Women Behind the Plow” shares insights of 19 women ranging in age from 15 to 92 on what its like to be a woman involved in agriculture. Stories range from growing up on a farm during the great depression of the 1930’s to farming with todays modern technology. The women express themselves with great candor and share a common love of the land.
The 60-minute video documentary “Women behind the Plow” is based on the book “Women Behind the Plow” that features oral histories and historic photographs honoring the contributions of women who worked in the fields and raised families in a time before electricity. Four women featured in the book are also featured in the documentary.
All of the women interviewed came from German-Russian Country, a three county area in south central North Dakota comprised of Emmons, Logan and McIntosh counties. It’s an area strong on agriculture but even stronger on heritage and stories.
The documentary is a partnership between Prairie Public Broadcasting, the Tri-County Tourism Alliance and the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection of the NDSU Libraries.

I enjoyed this so very much! I really appreciate the fact that so many women are taking up farming and also being recognized for it! It's such hard, yet satisfying work! Excellent job ladies! So proud of you!

Very educational for those of us not brought up on a farm. Sounds like a lot of hard work!

Hey, love the equality presented here! At the same time, chip the cattle - don't brand them. In a day and age where chipping is available, it's animal abuse to brand them. Any time you have to hold an animal down to do something to it, when there's a kinder way to accomplish a necessary goal, it's animal abuse. Plain and simple. You *can* do better.

6:50 she says my husband always treated me like an equal partner in the farm. Well that's because you do all the work in the farm he is in charge of milking the cows and you're in charge of every single thing else sounds to me like it's your farm and he's the help!

Right off the bat, I can't think of many jobs a woman can't do. It's public perception that needs changing. As a male, I remember the first time I saw a female apprentice electrician start in our shop. She turned into a damned fine journeyman. Pun is intended.😎

I have plowed behind an old white mule for hours at a time. He didn't care much for me and I didn't care much for him.
