I really appreciate the way you film and explain, making it easy for us owners to do. Now that he has been with me for almost a month, its time to begin a formal training routine. Ive done some very easy ones since the day he arrived. But I think with breeds like Doberman its very important to make it a routine and daily practice. My little man is just beyond smart, alert, and so curious! But also because of these traits, I have to train him consistently with a good program. And seems like God has led me to the right place.! This is a great addition to add. We have a strong "Touch" recall that I use. He's the type of dog that must stay on a leash whenever we're outside so sometimes I use a 30ft leash and I combined that with a touch recall. I call his name, then say "touch". He'll come running to touch my hand and I'll give him a treat then let him go back to what he was doing so he won't associate it with the end of playtime. Sometimes we leave but mostly we stay.

agnaeus it’s a decision that has to be made based on the life of the individual dog and their health. I don’t believe there’s one correct answer that will work for all dogs.

Hi whenever I try to take my GSD out on walks the stray dogs in my area starts attacking, barking and show other aggressive behaviours towards my shepherd.Which in turn results in my shepherd getting riled up and lunging at the street dogs.Is there anything I can do to ensure a more peaceful walk? The situation is so out of hand that now even a 10mins walk is becoming more and more difficult.
@Infinity Stones I live in India and the people here couldn't care less about street dogs and human alike. And I doubt of there is even an animal control here
There are a few things you can do. Train your dog the "middle" position (a heel between your legs). This will become his "safe spot" that then frees your hands to deal with the approaching dogs. I use a walking stick, umbrella or riding crop and bash the ground in front of the approaching dogs to scare them away. By showing your dog that YOU will keep him safe and YOU will keep strange dogs away from him, he won't feel the need to defend himself. I would practice each element in isolation (go out with a stick and practice shooing dogs away), practice the "middle" position indoors and outside in a "safe" area. What you want is for your dog to go to "middle" whenever a dog approaches, you shoo the dog or dogs away, you then release your dog from "middle" and continue your walk.
sohan banerjee I live in Nepal and the situation is the exact same. The strays are friendly towards human but very aggressive towards new dogs. Ps I also have shepherd. He is 9 month old and its very hard to control him when that happens.
Your dog will want to protect himself and you naturally, so if you want him to be calm around aggressive dog you need to keep him safe. Take a strong spray bottle of vinegar and spray the strays in the eyes and mouth if they come near you. Or something stronger like pepper spray.
Last time I tried to train my two dogs (separately) the alpha started growling @ me … >;( Ide what to do I guess to stop training them and just give them their food
I’d rather my dog enjoyed walks and does what’s natural to him ... I hate all this breaking down what is natural in our dogs .. it’s like we try to destroy what makes our dogs dogs
The whole point of a structured walk is to separate dog time and walk time. By walking nicely on a loose lead, the dog earns the opportunity to be a "free dog". We then let them do what they want and when dog time is over, when we go back into walking mode. It takes nothing away from the dog's natural behaviors, it's just giving it some structure.
