Season 2 in 2025 hype! I never thought I'd end up loving Apothecary Diaries as much as I did when I first started. It was one of the best anime in the past year hands down. Going to miss Maomao and Jinshi and ESPECIALLY her onee-chans but as Himmel the Hero once said, don't cry, because it'll be embarrassing when we see each other again in 2025. 😁😁😇😇

The Apothecary Diaries and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End are easily my top 2 contenders for AOTY in 2025 RN. I enjoyed both more than JJK and current SL, not to say those are bad at all, but to give perspective. I think only Vinland Saga S2 was done as well as these 2 in the 2023/2024 space and that is impressive and pleasantly surprising.
I find it such an interesting touch that Lakan sees her face, but doesn't ACTUALLY see it. His prosopagnosia doesn't just go away around Fengxian and Maomao, he still has it. As such, even if he can recognize Fengxian's face, his brain DOESN'T recognize the ways that it's changed from the syphilis. All he really sees is that it's her, and as such she's still as beautiful as he's ever known her.

When reading the novel and manga, I took that scene to mean that Lakan can see her as she is now since she has scars when he enters the room, and we're still in his perspective. Once he gets closer, they disappear, conveying that he perceives her as beautiful regardless.

Fengxian's lack of disfiguration in Lakan's view of her is a good example of a benefit of Prosopagnosia, he cannot recognise faces to begin with; but for Fengxian and Maomao, he can recognise them regardless... so that means that regardless of how horribly her face is messed up; Lakan will still see her as the beautiful woman she always was, because whether her physical face was beautiful or not was never a factor for Lakan in the first place
He'd be the sort of man who'd recognise the love of his life and cherish her, even if she lost an arm, gained weight or lost one of her eyes, as those things were never a factor for Lakan

In episode 4, as lady Fuyou left the rear palace, Momo wondered if it was love that made someone beautiful, while looking at her pinky finger. 20 episodes later, we have our answer 🥲
I love that, as fraught as her relationship with both her parents is, she still danced to celebrate her mother being bought out of the Verdigris house.
At least in the manga, she said she only did it because Meimei asked her to.
Iirc it was Ep 3. Ep 4 is when Mao Mao treated Lihua and the slap scene..
Everytime Maomao wonders about love, she always looked at her warped pinky, because as far as her experience goes, the act of love brings nothing but grieve (like Fenxian and Lakan's tragic love that causes the Verdigris house to almost collapsing, and causing Fenxian's body & mental health to detoriate drastically to the point where she'd cut her own daughter's pinky finger).
But Maomao knew from other people that love can be beautiful and become a powerful source of strength too, like what she saw in Lady Fuyou and other courtesans around her.
Deep deep down, she probably wish to experience a normal, wonderful love like everybody else, but she's too emotionally detached to recognize that, so she just claimed she already left behind the feeling of "love" in Fenxian's womb 😭

Even if there's a genuine love formed between a courtesan and a client, I can imagine it's hindered by the economy, social status, family's blessing, or smth like that; very few of the case ended with happily ever after. That's a part of what makes Maomao such a realist when it comes to love.
There is another reason why Meimei cried.
She also had developed feelings for Lakan (since after Fengxian, Lankan had interacted with her the most).
But she also understood what kind-off relationship those two had, and couldn't bring herself to deny it.
Yeah they left out a line during her crying about getting her hopes up.

About your question regarding the Verdigris House's matron - the elderly woman Maomao refers to as Granny... yep! The matron is Fengxian's mother, meaning she *IS* Maomao's literal grandmother.

it happened on the same trip as the frog accident when a certain very pretty man was offered boiled softshell turtle Apparently there’s been cases for at this place or aphrodisiacs, were mixed into their food he offered it to maomao since she didn’t care, and she thought all the food look delicious and due to the fact that soft shell turtle was believed to have an aphrodisiac effect, and he didn’t want to be hot and bothered for whoever gave him the turtle. Then Maomao told them the story. I mentioned above

But more than that, she wanted him to be happy with Fengxian, whom she served.
This behavior was based on a kind of self-sacrifice.

The story is great. It's a weird case of a Shojo/Josei marketed to adult men, probably because of the murder mystery, brothel and political aspects. But it's so good. It's probably in the same category as female leads as Promised Neverland, even though their personalities are different.

I’m crazy excited for season 2, since there’s so much material that can be adapted. The end of this season takes us squarely to the end of Volume 2 of the light novels, and there are currently 10 released in English (Volume 11 is due out in May). I for one who we get many more seasons, as this is a fantastic journey.
In the prior episode and in the manga available here in the United States, the strategist sees his uncle, Maomao's adopted father, as a chariot piece. I don't know why Maomao says otherwise here; either that's a writing error or a translation error or she's genuinely misinformed.

I started watching Apoth only because I wanted to watch something that seems like a nonchalant, kinda slice-of-life show to pass the time (heck the synopsis wasn't even that interesting to begin with) I didn't know I'd be invested this deep. Peak writing, peak narrative, even the comedy has a good pacing! Such damn good show!

This show came along at the perfect time for me. I had finally caught up to current on Detective Conan after 3 years and needed that mystery show itch scratched. And what did last year gift me? Undead Girl Murder Farce, Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions, and Apothecary Diaries.
It's been a good year to be a mystery fan. Can't wait for S2 :)

Lakan's reunion with Fengxian makes me cry. And I'm not a crier. I'm so glad they got a little bit of happiness, however bittersweet it is with Fengxian being terminal.
I think the only problem i had with the adaptation of this section of the material was that it didn't relay how much the old woman charged Lakan and the subsequent celebrations that occurred.
It also failed to adequately express that Maomao's dance was one of joy that her mother was bought out. It was far clearer in the novel.
Overall this was a very impressive adaptation and i look forward to next year.

I felt the same as you about Apothecary Diaries when it started (the anime) but I gave it a try once the dubbed episodes were posted. I was about 3 or 4 episodes in, I loved it and couldn't wait for the other dubbed episodes. I ran to google to find the manga online. I then started watching the subbed episodes because I couldn't wait for the dubbed episodes. So now I watch both. I really do prefer dubbed though, but with these simulcast shows, there a two or three that I enjoy the sub enough to watch in addition to the dubbed.
The confirmation of the season 2 is more emotional than the episode itself lol. xD
The reunion did bring some tears to my eyes. This anime is so beautiful. And then my brain had to ruin it by imagining Maomao singing "Let it Go? while she danced... Why is my brain like this?

About abortion medicines/drugs whatever you want there will be several instances about it in the future season. Heck the first story would might even slid that info in. The 2nd instance of that made me laugh, a high ranking consort is pregnant and slapped the sh*t out of her lady in waiting then in the next panel in the manga jinshi said that wasnt much of a punishment and she had to be talked out of clocking her lady in waiting with a solid closed fist.
Given how you've reacted to Frieren and Apothecary Diaries, I can strongly recommend you watch The Ancient Magus' Bride. It's another truly beautiful anime I recently discovered and it's blowing my mind.

This season took my breath away. I did not think I could develop sympathy for Lakan. He was not a villain but I did think he was a deeply morally flawed. The finale exploded that view and really revealed the tragedy that many contributed towards and Lakan’s real feeling for Fengxian.
This was a great anime and great season finale. The only thing it missed was how Lakan meet Maomao. Too bad it showed only in 3 frames but not complete and context. Anyway, it was great. And when second season was announced at then end of the episode, I jumped from my seat with a big smile on my face.
The reason why Maomao doesnt have a cut off fingertip is because fingertips actually grow back. Thats what you should have talked about. That was the most wtf-thing this episode for me.

I've been watching anime for 11 years and these are getting added way up in my list
i don't know about contraceptives, but I had a friend who was a ethno botanist and was very knowledgeable about plants, their historic uses, and the compounds in them and she mentioned a few that could induce miscarriage, though not as certain as what we have today they could pretty reliably abort babies if someone was pregnant. I'm sure they had some kinds of contraceptives but I'm not sure how reliable they were.
Yeah, if anything fail they gotta use more stronger one, even with mercury, which is really used in Edo era in Japan, at first they use cheaper contraceptives if they can help it

The pleasure district is based off the one in Edo Japan so the abortions were done with mercury. That was the "medicine" used. Though they could have something better. This show has a slightly higher understanding of medicine than what was typical of the time with Maomao knowing about inherited traits like Colour blindness. They don't know germ theory yet so you get things like the wrong explanation for why honey is bad for babies.
Considering that Maomao considers quicksilver (mercury) a nasty poison not to be consumed casually I kinda doubt she’d use them in abortificants. Since you mention colour blindness I assume you’ve read ahead and yeah, what she uses to make it hasn’t been explained.

@@DefinitivelyZach She's fine with whoever Lakan chose. It's just she knows Meimei has affection for Lakan. Meimei's also nearing retirement, she's a wife material, and Lakan is a decent guy. And like I said, Fengxian's time is limited, Lakan will inevitably be heartbroken for the 2nd time.
She just gave a hint to Lakan, I think she left the choice to the people involved.

This is because your bones are still actively growing until you're done with puberty. As long as there was some of the metacarpal pinky bone there, it would grow back, albeit probably not exactly the correct way.
