@5:40 you mentioned UTP and issues with STP. I see the RJ45 port also had metal so guessing the shielding was bonding the chassis ground of both devices, which ends creating a potential ground loop and sums the various noises (static electricity, 60Hz hum, radio) from both ends. It would have been nice to drop the shield on one end and see if that fixed the issue. In certain applications, shielding should have only one path to earth (or in your case chassis) ground, which might have been the issue here. This is a subject I have been researching for a while now and why I use (so far successfully) CAT5+ shielding that drains at one end only for AES50.
We use this type of technology (but from Kramer and using fiber) to operated the control consoles in oil/gas industry. Some support up to 4 monitors at 60 fps each. Makes working on a computer pretty simple as it’s rack mounted at a reasonable height instead of laying on the floor. Also better for noise and cooling. The lay-flat stand would be neat for a touchscreen monitor.
I like this as an option. I'm debating getting a small rack in our tech booth. But may not go this route. We're finishing up our church renovation and thinking through the booth cleanup. (All the cables are running on the desk while we finish the floor.) The runs to a rack would be under 15ft, so we're just thinking of mounting the hardware underneath the desk along the sides of the cabinets. It may not be pretty, but we went over budget with everything else. All the excess cable in the ceiling ended up in the booth as well, so we're thinking of getting garage utility hooks to hide the excess under the desk. For everyone else, keep this in mind. What are "Nice to have" items, verses "Need to have" items.
I LOVE using kvms! I use KVM software to simultaneously control my laptop and desktop at home. Can have music/videos/etc. playing on my laptop while working on stuff on my desktop and it doesn't use the desktop's resources.
I used same brand for our rack mixer. I needed the mixer up front but still wanted control with FireWire at tech booth. Used this to mimic having a stagebox and it was super solid for years
This concept of design is also used in A&H's flagship "dLive" consoles. Both I/O and processing are concentrated in a rackmount unit, and the "mixing desk" itself is just a control terminal.
Also make sure you read the manual for the KVM, most of the ones I use in industrial environments require STP to work correctly. Used UTP cable in a control room and the system was unusable. For those who need really long distance runs, there are also fiber optic solutions as well.
I made the same comment (a little more wordy) one day before your comment. Would have been nice to see if dropping the drain on one end would have solved the issue.
@@Churchfront Yes, it's unshielded, point to point connections. It has just a slight lag when using the mouse that is very usable, but certainly not ideal when you need to work fast running propresenter.
I have a test for this baby. Most of our broadcasts are for sports. We have a Roland P20-HD replay controller used in conjunction with a Wacom pen tablet. I need to extend the pen tablet (usb and hdmi) to a remote commentator location. This would be worth its weight in gold if it worked.
A question, would it be possible to connect to a Mac mini an MR18 as an audio interface to send the streaming audio and use a KVM to send that audio to the FOH through the network cables? Thanksss 🙏🏻
Say one of these workstations needs a quick option for a usbc hookup for a ssd. How would you go about that? Would you have to go back to the control room and plug it in then come back to the workstation? Because if you usb-a to c adapt, there would be a bottleneck in speed
Just put in an adder KVM for our Resolume computer. Have you had any luck with getting MIDI controllers to go through KVM? I can power the unit(akai, midi mix), but the Mac won’t see it as a midi device. I confirmed it works by plugging it directly in to the new Mac Studio also.
Just curious are these on your lan or do you need to run a separate cable between each KVM? I see they have a lan model and the ports labeled lan not utp.
@@Churchfront Thanks for the reply. I worry about having a computer back in a rack and a power flicker/outage takes place and the only way to power the computer back on is to go to the rack and press the power button. It would be great is there was a way for for the KVM to allow for power on/off as needed.
@@halharrison9823for this I recommend to things 1. Getting a UPS which is important for the equipment to not get shot with an electric issues 2. set the Mac to reboot on automatically after power loss. This is imperative especially in situations where the computer is not easily accessible
If it's at the back of the church, wouldn't it make more sense to not confuse people by calling it "front of house"?¿?¿? We refer to ours simply as "the tech desk". 😊
This was a great video. I only have one critique. The metric system is used by more than half of the world’s population. And it’s highly robust. I work in AVL for churches and non church venues. When you say things like “real measuring units” you insult people throughout the world. As believers we need to avoid doing this. It also degrades your ability to be trusted professionally. We should be learning both because both are really strong forms of measurement. Be blessed.
It's a joke as old as Methuselah.... I live in Europe and make the same joke with my friends and colleagues on the 'other side'. They do the same. Same for driving a car on the left Vs right side of the road. We all know that the left side is the right side 😊 I honestly can't see the reason for anyone to be offended.

great idea for solving the messy tech booth desk. Usually the desk is a spaghetti mess of cables, but this will do nicely
Thank you for posting this!!
We’ve had a few headaches with our extender, used shielded cables.. so now this’ll resolve that issue😂😂
Love your videos! Any chance we can get an updated version of "What's In Our Pelican Case?" ?
Love our KVM. I use 3 macs at FOH. I use a KVM to switch our single Keyboard and mouse between them.

We use the Apple Magic trackpad 2 on the propresenter machine at one of the churches I assist at. The solution is to leave it plugged in all the time.
Wired trackpad acceptable. Magic Mouse not acceptable.
@@ChurchfrontChurch I go to uses Magic Mice. I agree stuff with batteries isn't a great idea.

We just got some of these and notice lots of latency on the workstation end. Pretty tough to use.
Are you sure you’re using unshielded cable?

We use a kvm for a touchscreen that requires usb and hdmi and it works great. My guess is this would work fine
If it doesn’t, I would look at Kramer. They have made these for years and we used them in oil/gas to extend KVM for extreme distances.

Correct you would probably want to get a better kvm for that.
The IT guy at work was very unhappy with me for using a Macally keyboard🤣
Could I connect my Behringer wing to the KVM via usb as well?

We use a midi controller and touch screen for Waves LV1 and the midi works fine with an AVAccess kvm.
@ thanks for the response. I will investigate and test further. Could be our network switches capacity possibly. Upgrade may be necessary
@@zaneellis5you shouldn’t be running these KVM through a network switch. They are meant to be point to point.
Can someone provide an Amazon link to the correct type of ethernet cable? I am paranoid about not getting the right kind...
We use truecable cat 6 unshielded riser or plenum. www.truecable.com/products/cat6-riser-ethernet-cable-unshielded

We don’t use the lan models because these ones are a bit more fool proof being point to point
I need a KVM that can do 4 computers.
Do you think it will work with CAT5e? We currently use an HDMI extender over CAT5e and it works great but we need USB.
Yes, it should work fine. Just make sure it’s unshielded. Also just check with the manufacturer recommendations.
