I've heard that Tarantino considers this the weakest of his films, but I've always thought it was among his finest works. Zoe Bell was really fantastic, and Kurt Russell looked like he really enjoyed himself. The whole cast was just excellent.

In case you're confused, this and "Planet Terror" were released under the name GRINDHOUSE as a double feature, and was Tarantino's ode to the exploitation films of the 70s. That's why there's grainy film, audio and video skips/jumps, and a "cheap" feel to the films. It was all intentional. Some of the fake attractions got so much attention as well, they went on to be films in their own right (i.e. two Machete movies with Danny Trejo). Zoe Bell in case you're wondering, is a real stunt professional (did Uma Thurman's stunts for Kill Bill), and this was her first role as an actual actor. And yes, she really did ride the hood of that care bareback. Lots of hidden easter eggs in these two films. And a lot of actors/actresses are from Tarantino's other films.

He gets lost in paying homage to 70s grindhouse and forgets to make THIS movie. One of the defining traits of grindhouse is that they were sold on the name and gimmick and poster, but the contents seldom lived up to the promise. He captured that perfectly, but should have been willing to sacrifice that authenticity to make it better.

In the big perspective and framework of an old school revenge movie he got what he deserved, yes. But they only knew he had endangered their lives, not that he had killed anyone, before they went on with their revenge hunt to murder him.
If they knew he had killed before, I could call it justified revenge or maybe vigilante justice. But here it's "He damaged the car and we could have been hurt. Let's kill him!" But then again, that's how revenge works. It's always escalating.

In my mind Grindhouse fits more into that second category.

I thought the conversations were fun and interesting and felt like genuine conversations these characters would have. Quentin is one of the only directors/writers who knows how to write interesting and realistic dialogue to whatever setting or story he's telling. I never once felt bored listening to the conversations between the characters. I know some people don't like the movie because they feel like it was too much talking and not enough action, but I loved it. This one of my favorite movies.

Zoe Bell was the stunt double for Uma Thurman in the "Kill Bill" films, and did stunt work for Tarantino in other ones as well. This was the first film (I believe) where she actually got to play a full role (as herself, basically) along with doing those dramatic car hood stunts. That last 30 minutes was really worth the price of admission, and was a throwback to some great '70s car-chase films like "Vanishing Point."

I loooooove this movie. The old school 70s vibe, the masterclass that is the dialogue, the sloooow burn, the plot turn when the girls take control. I understand if Tarantino thinks of it as his weakest film but in a way it's supposed to be as it's supposed to be aping the Roger Corman kind of make-a-movie-as-fast-and-cheap-as-you-can style of filmmaking but he still didn't slouch on any important aspect of it really. The rubber duck as the hood ornament on the Chevy Nova that Stuntman Mike crashes head-on into the girls is a tribute to the 1977 movie Convoy where the main character Kris Kristofferson is a trucker who's handle is "Rubber Duck" because he's got the same hood ornament on the hood of his semi truck.

    • @tannhauser5399

@Maurice Lee - yeah and he gets the message through, by... a seemingly simple and yet deep/complex stories. Sold to us in a very visual ways in some cases.
It you look at the list of the movies that have inspired him, as sometimes even he is even referencing some of them in a subtle way in his movies = then all that make sense.
So is his intersts in comics, and various stories/shows from Japan and so on... And even his friendship with Robert Rodriguez.
But saying the above, I don't think he claimed to be an expert at this ("making female empowerment films").
I don't think that this is his main goal at this point, as the stories are much more complex than seeing everything from that point of view only.
There are few others better, older movies and characters in this case, that we can easily reference.
Note: much respect here, @Maurice Lee. I don't mean to offend anybody here! Just offering some additional points/comments to the discusion.
All in all, I agree with you :)

Alien, Aliens, whole Resident Evil series of movies with Milla Jovovitch, Tomb Rider (the older ones with Angelina Jolie), Erin Brockovich, Terminator 1 & 2, Michelle Yeow as You Shu Lien (in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)... List is long.
Now, in most movies - it feels a bit likey they are forcing those issues, instead of simply showing us a good story where a woman is simply a strong character - based on the story itself. Without forcing us to listen any comments about it during the movie, or any additional political correctness and so on.

Sam Raimi had her double for Lucy Lawless in Xena: Warrior Princess then she did anything Uma Thurman couldn't do in Kill Bill and Tarantino had been working on the concept of a slasher film using a stunt driver. It was a perfect storm. So he cast Zoe in her first leading role as an actor because he wanted to show there was no CG and he could shoot from any angle and you'd see it was Zoe. She's done stunts in any movie he's done since and moved up to stunt coordinator for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She's amazing. Obviously.
