Tom Allen est un Guglielmo de grande classe. Tout est juste et en place. Son baryton lyrique, énergétique, plein de couleurs, de noirceurs et de soleil, est parfait pour le personnage.
Thomas Allen is absolutely glorious in voice and masculine pulchritude. Wish I could develop a taste for Mozart operas, but, well, it hasn't happened yet.
@akacentimetre I agree. This is the most fiery interpretation of 'Donne mie' I've ever heard from Allen or any other baritone for that matter. Allen simply goes for it here and the result is breathtaking.
Watching this production as a whole, I think they've cut out quite a bit of some recitative in general. A whole chunk of recitative between Guglielmo, Ferrando and Don Alfonso when the latter asks the two chaps to marry the sisters just before 'Tutti accusan le donne' was completely omitted for some bizarre reason!
Haha no, your eyes have not deceived you and this is certainly Thomas Allen in a role most different from Don Alfonso. Personally, it's a breath of fresh air to see him in Cosi and play the 'victim' than the 'puppet-master' for once...just shows his range as a singer and actor. I certainly agree with you about Mozart tenors. Of course, there are *some* lovely tenor arias like 'Dalla sua pace' and 'Un'aura amorosa' but yes, in general...they tend to whine rather annoyingly. =D
Let's hope we get a good video of Un' aura amorosa from Matthew Polenzani some day though I don't think he does Ferrando anymore. I would pay lots of good money if I didn't have to travel so far to hear Matt sing whiny Mozart tenor role.
I know, I've just realised how hypocritical Tamino sounds...after all, he's the one crying 'Hilfe! Hilfe' as his entrance line while Papageno has a much more relaxed entrance with 'Der Voegelfanger bin ich ja'. Ah well... ;-)
The tenor's not up to much, but my GOD, Allen. His voice in this just about knocks me over. I can't believe he's able to control that much power!
Bravo

Excellent Tempo ! That is Mozart! Bravo

I haven't seen this for a while. I have just watched it again and it has made me smile. Thanks, Sir Tom!

@Sexpansion It's Thomas Allen...you probably can't get more awesome than him in terms of lyric baritones, methinks :D
