    Getting ready to retire. Moving out of an apartment back into a home. Haven’t done any real gardening for a good 20 years. I always had a beautiful garden. But I’m going to use the cardboard method. No weeds to kill this old back. Great video. Thank you!

    with the cardboard, mulch method you still get weeds... the difference is when your not pulling them from compacted dirt it's quite easy... I dig a deep hole and place the weeds I pull in it.. watering this hole works as a sponge and fertilizer producer as it decays. Local gardens are things that freedom and health are built on.

      Bff Entertainment This formula if lain out now, will be ready to plant in the spring. I had and am having amazing results. I suggest when planting to plant much closer than you are accustomed to. The soil will have all the qualities you need. Additionally, this will create a shade mulch, to add to your straw mulch.

    mushroom compost is the discarded soil medium from mushroom farms. The nutrients have been extracted to the point that even mushrooms will no longer grow in there. the name, Mushroom Compost, sounds like a wonderful lush soil full of mycelium. it is misleading at best. selling bags of dirt is big business and most of it is poor growing medium. there are a few good soils available but the price reflects the high quality.
    the gardener here is promoting a wonderful method of building a garden and I applaud and encourage his work. keep in mind, if you are new to gardening. a lot of what we do is based on hearsay so, for example, he doesn't like to use animal manure. nothing wrong with that but it's a safe and ancient practice. they spread chicken manure on the fields here in NC. But follow his teaching and you are on your way to a rewarding past time that doesn't require any money to be spent.

    I’d read somewhere that rabbits don’t like to get their feet tangled up. They were attacking my snow peas. So I put in a sort of “playpen” around my snow peas; made of bamboo sticks, and tied string around the whole square patch. They left those snow peas alone! So I’d bet they wouldn’t like your chicken wire.

      5 gallon bucket filled about half way with water, add bird seed to cover top of water. Place bucket next to short wall or set of stairs or next to a couple of cinder blocks so rodents can get into bucket easily. Check daily with small rake for dead rodents and remove them. That worm juice is called leachate and not worm tea. It can actually have bad microbes in it that can make you ill as it is not from the worms but the juice of the fruits and vegetables. Worm tea which is what you should be using is castings mixed into water and aerated and unsulphered molasses added to it if you like to get the microbes going.

      Goat poo composts quite quickly because it is pelleted like rabbit poo. My milkers are fed very well and their urine gives a lot of nitrogen to the bedding as well. I use wood shavings and it breaks down quickly. We cant get straw here in the south. I have a garden with a foot of goat compost and just laid down some card board and put more on top. Have some winter greens and garlic growing quite well. Easier her to grow in winter then summer. So darn hot and humid, a lot of plants die from fungus.

    • @jimwilleford6140
      @jimwilleford6140 4 роки тому +2

      Joe Joe. Never directly above the cardboard. Put compost and /or rotted manure over the cardboard. Wet each layer down, then straw. Pull the straw back from the planting medium and plant seeds. Leaving the straw pulled back a few inches. As it sprouts, then slowly pull the straw or other mulch slowly back around the plant. However, never pull the mulch directly around the plant, it will create stem rot.

    Can you do this type of garden if you have blue clay soil?

    • @libbyworkman1666
      @libbyworkman1666 4 роки тому

      Nancy James Given your soil, I would lay out the cardboard to define a garden area, and use that largest bin full of compost to make a raised bed in it. You could edge the cardboard with bricks or stones to hold the cardboard down. With all that lovely compost he has made using dead leaves, grass clippings, kitchen vegetable peelings, and Garden worms you would have excellent soil. To make it even prettier think about using paving stones to cover the cardboard. And the cardboard would keep weeds from springing up between the pavers which can be found At Lowes or Home Depot.

    One NOTE: If you live in the southeast US, contact your State/County Department of Agriculture Extension Agent's office or go to their website and inquire about using Wood, Bark mulch, Leaves, Paper, Cardboard (Cellulose, all) in your garden and /or near (40 ft or less to any structure as it relates to SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES. I mean NO DISRESPECT to Mr. John McCarley OR Ms Mary Palmer Dargan but you need to know about this subject. As a LEO friend of mine says: DO IT NOW!

      Philippine Islands Adventure Milo USA Best referred to as Permaculture method. It is organic, but otherwise not the same. I suggest Googling “ Deep Green Permaculture, No Dig Gardening” scroll down to yellow diagram of the formula. This is what I did with my first test bed, and am still hyperventilating over the success. This fall I have converted my entire back yard into permaculture. 😎.

    in our place huangpu china we use all natural resources including human poop but we compost it properly before going to garden. that's why we have large crops being exported around the world.

    What’s the purpose of putting compost on top of the cardboard? The roots aren’t in that nutrient rich soil?

    • @GrumblingGrognard
      @GrumblingGrognard 4 роки тому +1

      I holds the cardboard in place (obviously, but very important); and it decomposes and it will filter nutrients down into the soil; it also (most important) keeps the soil moist.

    • @jimwilleford6140
      @jimwilleford6140 4 роки тому +1

      Ditto Grumbling Gonard....The weight holds the cardboard down. Each layer of added material, including the cardboard, needs to be evenly watered in.
