    Congregational hymn singing at its absolute best! Roman Catholics take note. Love all those hats! I well remember when my Mom wore all those big, fancy hats way back in the 50s and 60s. One wasn't fully dressed without the hat that made a statement.

      I haven’t got as far as choosing hymns for my funeral but GMOTGR was one of the hymns when I got married, specifically the closing hymn; I chose it on those grounds:
      - association with weddings for the past ten years at least, due to being sung at the Prince & Princess of Wales’ wedding and the Sussexes’ wedding
      - my husband is a quarter Welsh through his father and GMOTGR is a Welsh hymn; my father-in-law’s face lit up when the organist played the introduction to cue everyone to stand

      @smadge100 I don't really think of Anglicans as "Protestants" at all. I think that's outdated thinking one is likely to hear from the BBC. They're essentially sister churches with the Roman Catholics, not really "protesting" anything these days. Anglicans are more in a neutral category with Lutherans. In fact, decades ago the US Episcopal Church (USEC) removed the word "Protestant" from the last revision of The Hymnal and The Book of Common Prayer, so clearly the officials of the US Episcopal Church doesn't consider themselves to be "Protestant" either.

    Hold me with thy powerful hand:
    Bread of heaven,
    Feed me till I want no more.
    Open now the crystal fountain
    Whence the healing stream doth flow;
    Let the fire and cloudy pillar
    Lead me all my journey through:
    Strong deliverer,
    Be thou still my strength and shield.
    When I tread the verge of Jordan,
    Bid my anxious fears subside;

      That's the Episcopal Church in North America. Go to any large Episcopal church and their choirs are magnificent. Sorry, but Rome can't come close to them unless it's the Vatican, of course. This "Episcopal Church in the United States," is itself from the Church of England. Same service, same music, same delightful pageantry (on special occasions) i.e. Christmas, Easter, Pentecoste (WhitSunday). Some Episcopal churches DO have pageantry every Sunday. Just depends on how BIG their congregation is - how many in their choir - etc. I visit St. Paul's when I am in London. Their evensong is beautiful but it seems there is always more in the choir than in the congregation. What one would expect on a week night at 5:00. The Episcopal church in Scottsdale, AZ had evensong during Lent, but that too, went away a few years ago. Find one - they're certainly around - ask at what service their choir sings, go and visit. Sing in the Congregation. Enjoy yourself. Go Especially on Easter and/or Christmas. Look around. You're bound to find one with wonderful hymn singing. And you would be Most Welcome.

    In reading some of the other comments, I am surprised at all the detail that folk go to discuss things that have nothing to do with the singing of this magnificent hymn in this majestic and beautiful space. The word "Redeemer" was not substituted here, it is written this way in many hymnals. Redeemer is a much better word than "Jehovah." It encompasses the meaning of the entire hymn and actually says whom is being sung about much more than Jehovah does, especially to folks who have no idea regarding the meaning of this hymn. I listened and watched a second time. No one in their British Cathedral right mind in England knows that a descant would be sung on the last hymn. I did not notice any surprise and I did not notice anyone getting lost in the hymn when the choir changed the chord.

    • @danmoran454
      @danmoran454 3 роки тому +1

      @ Dennis Staughton: There's nothing "cluttered" about this descant. The chordal harmonic structure for the descant verse is different (in a good way as far as I'm concerned and I'm a musician) than what you've probably heard before, and the descant is written accordingly. It's one of the finest arrangements I've heard. And there are about 3 other descants/arrangements that I've heard for this hymn.

      She heard it was going to rain. And then there is Catherine, whose millinerial creations seem always to hang perilously off the starboard bow of her head.

    this is a great hymn for congregational singing....good parts but fairly easy. The organ is beautiful but it is drowning some of the vocal harmony.

      Laura Opper It's virtually impossible to achieve 'balance' in St Paul's, with its 9 seconds reverberation. This is about as good as it gets - and since the BBC sound engineers are the best in the world, we'll have to settle for it.

    This singing by Christian fundamentalists is quite good but would have been better if it had been in tune and not so off key.

      Rameez. Please. The Church of England is not a source for your "Christian fundamentalists"! You'd be better off finding a video showing a southern baptist congregation. It would make better sense. Also, not all Christian congregations sound this EPIC! This is exceptional and even a non-christian as yourself can feel how good it was in fact. Last but not least. You're hearing this wonderful music from a CATHEDRAL environment. They are perfectly in tune but due to the acoustics of a cathedral they are tonal overtones ALL OVER THE PLACE causing it tones to waver every now and then but probably only noticeable to trained ears like yours. Just sayin.
