Lyrics:
You're the cream in my coffee,
You're the salt in my stew;
You will always be my necessity--
I'd be lost without you.
You're the starch in my collar,
You're the lace in my shoe;
You will always be my necessity--
I'd be lost without you.
Most men tell love tails,
And each phrase dovetails.
You've heard each known way,
This way is my own way.
You're the sail of my love boat,
You're the captain and crew;
You will always be my necessity--
I'd be lost without you.
100 years young this year! Marvellous!
Sadly drummer Vincent Riewe (seen at 2:02) passed away at age 57 in March 2017. He was instrumental (nevermind the pun) in the rise of Max Raabe and the Palast Orchestra. May his soul rest in peace.
Perfect rendition. We'd be lost without Max.
Absolutely perfect. I actually like the slightly-too-fast tempo, gives everything a carefree, funtime feel.
Max is the coolest man in the EU
I love the way Max sings!
Unglaublich, eben die Krönung dieses Zeitalters. Bravo Max Raabe!
Nice to see that this band can jazz things up ...those music makers are very talented
Swing Lives! Love Tom's dirty trumpet solo - yeah, man!!
My 5 year old loves this tune.
Ach dear Herr Raabe. How wundervoll.
I am sick of people hijacking a thread to bombard the rest of the world with their blinkers-type of view - a view that nobody but themselves care about. Can't people simply enjoy things like good music without trying to produce themselves? Max Raabe and the Palast Orchestra play excellent music of a bygone era that you are hard pressed to find nowadays. I love it!
With the saxes, splash cymbals, tuba, banjo, violin lead and scat breaks he sure creates a sound pretty darn close to original, perhaps even better than hearing it on a 78 with scratches, clicks, hisses, etc. And it's a little embarrasing that the country that originally composed and popularized great songs like this one never fostered a rebirth of such a fabulous presentation.
It's the exact replica of the version of Jack Hylton in 1928 just a little faster. It's absolutely wonderfull, he brings you back in the 30s!
LOL, listening them back to back makes me realize you're completely right - Jack Hylton's version has always been my fave and I was delighted to hear Max Raabe made a cover! It is really like a "nightcore" version 😂nevertheless Max Raabe & Palaste is always a treat and I dream of seeing them!
Or rather 100 years back to 1923!
Wow! Sounds just like the 1920s!
Wonderful, watching their concert right now on PBS.
Marlene Dietrich sang this song for her screen test for Die blaue Engel, and
did a humorous version. Max also does a beautiful job. It's a treat to hear some
real music again.
I saw this performances last night & fell in love with his music!
Great bands (like this) make sure that great music (like this) never dies!
gah I'm gonna see them live today! I'm so excited!
Du bist so gut!
This is wonderful stuff, I think I just found one of my new favorite bands.
Best version EVER of this classic American song. His group is probably the best orchestral jazz troupe in history, a great song. But who is this gorgeous violist? I could look it up, but she just makes this band fabulous,
Outstanding!
Great musicians !!Greetings
Great stuff ... who could keep their feet still listening to this, or your head for that matter ... super fun.
¡Me muero del gustazoooo! ¡Qué preciosidad!
I'm in love. With every single member of this band.
You're right young man. You are what you eat, do, wear, think, read, like or listen to. The whole world plunged itself into a whirl of bad taste and ignorance
SEÑORES MUSICOS!!!
Aah back to the days of Jazz and dance bands wonderful..
Yeah I saw the show. Never heard of him either, now I'm hooked!
DANKE😘
What a great job of recreating the music, and particularly the mood.
Bacchusland: you are 100% correct, he certainly embodies a throwback to an elegant era, including a superb performance from his orchestra.

Es gefällt mir sehr!
thornie123. I am so happy to hear that my teenagers are not the only ones positively influenced by this type of music. I agree with you 100%. Reading your comment is refreshing.
Extraordinario, el y su orquesta!
My arms are flailing and my feet are high kicking to this one!
My bother just turned me on to this group. I simply LOVE it!
MAGNIFIQUE...ENCORE
I'm seeing then at Carnigie Hall on March 4, I'm SOOO excited!!
Heard him before...very good. Rosa Larsen
Great!!!*****5 stars Thanks!!
Fabulous
What smashing music - as always in the Max Raabe manner!
I doubt that they could have done a better version back in 1923!
maaan, now you are really cool! thanks for sharing this with us!!! ...
5 people are lost without her
Alleluia !
Fabulous!

Fun music, where has all the fun music gone? I seriously hate the modern stuff they call music these days...
Me too! Max Raabe

Hei brother in mind!
YOU ARE SOOOOOOOOOOO RIGHT!!!!!!!!
Thank you and welcome to our small "club" and go on with your way of thinking.
God bless you.
Jo from Germany
👏👏👏👍
Gotta like the 1930s Art deco,Tuxedoed, cabaret sound & look.
@thornie123 This is true talent. Being able to play a real instrument and putting it all together, with class that lets people forget about their problems and the worlds problems (even if only for a little while) i mean what is not to love about that?

My only criticism of the too-fast tempo is that it really doesn't get the lyrics a chance to shine. One thing about popular song from that period is that the lyrics are just as brilliant as the music, if not moreso. It's poetry, and needs to be savored. Although Sinatra was much later than this group's period (he really didn't come into his own until well into the 1940s), it's something "Ol Blue Eyes understood very well.
Lyricists like Lorenz Hart, Cole Porter, Ira Gershwin, Buddy Da Silva, Al Dubin, Johnny Mercer - they hardly exist anymore. This is an amazing group and I think they are top-notch at what they do, but if I could make one suggestion, it would be slow the tempo down to the point that the singer can actually tell the story.
There is a wonderful verse:
"I'm not a poet - how well I know it - I've never been a raver...
"But when I look at you - I rave a bit, it's true.."
"I'm lost without you - can't live without you - you give my life it's flavor..."
You can look up the rest for yourself, but the rhyme scheme is nothing short of brilliant - and Buddy Da Sylva and Lew Henderson were only two of so many brilliant lyricists of that time period.
If that isn't poetry worthy of Willy Shakes, I don't know what is that's been written in the last 100 years or so.
i like the speed and whimsical tune! i just wish he'd be able to perform in the phil :^c
The arrangement is virtually the same as the Jack Hylton original BUT as little faster and better for it. This must be the best recording of the song, ever! Now where do I go and see the band live? - preferably without the rain!
@ralphrita1 - I agree. Max is superb, as always - and this tune showcases the orchestra so well. Hard to beat this version of a wonderful old standard.
Ausgezeichnet.
If more people listened to this type music there would be less hate and crime in the world. Glenn Miller etc, its all wonderful. Instead of songs about hate and murder and drugs, this music was fun and you could have a good time listening to it. im only 17 years old and i LOVE this kind of music.
cool
He was mentioned on David Letterman show in USA tonight by a guest, and David hadn't heard of him, and hopes to get him on the show. We'll just have to see about that.
His English is perfect for this song, but I was not aware that he sang in English as well! He sounds like a typical singer from that era, but in the better sense of the word typical. Das ist schön:-)
haha im 16 and this is my favorite genre
@dcbusch1
Me too Detroit. This guy is great!
@wissing4 they arent alone thankfully. and hopefully there are many more teens like us out there that enjoy real music.
Why isn't this not on Spotify now? :(
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
@HMservant Why thank you, its a pleasure to be amongst you fine people :P
@Perktube1 They do dress up. I saw him in Oakland, California, in February 2010. I dressed in my 20s gangster suit. And, many men and women dressed in period costume for the concert.
Is there any live shows in Britain like this ?
Direct78 Broadcast
They're getting ready - or have already started - to go on tour. Next year (months away) I'll be seeing them, here in the States, for the fourth time. Google: Max Raabe Tour Dates.
