  • Why we don't want warm season grasses covering more than 20% of our farm. Warm season grasses make excellent forages for summer grazing; however, they do not provide quality stockpile for winter grazing conditions. It's hard to beat a good stand of fescue grass for winter stockpile grazing. For a Christmas gift to your significant other, check out my new book " How To Think Like A Grazier" on our website: greenpasturesfa...

All over the planet, most farmers feed grain to cattle and sheep, even if they not design to eat grain ,or corn silage ,but this is the sick mentality and they stick with that. What can be More beautiful than seeing cows or sheep grazing the ,,salad bar'' pasture and they live a long time healthy and happy , providing health and dense food for us.

To be able to pick up roadkill without being harassed, you have to call the sheriff and they will meet you and give you a free tag for the deer. Its dumb but it doesn't take much time (they want to get it over with quickly just like you do), and its totally worth the effort.

It looks dumb, but for every rule there's usually a reason.
I don't know about the US, but in northwest France there was a problem with hunters going for boar out of season, and then if caught claiming "oh it was roadkill, so I brought it home and butchered it". Making it so people had to report roadkilled boar they were taking home was an attempt to stop it, or at least be able to prosecute poachers when caught.

Lol at the MDC and deer issue. You provide enough deer and wildlife habitat to increase the local wildlife by ten fold vs the average farm operator. Deer are so thick and considering all you do for wildlife and environment...my opinion is you'd be justified in taking deer for dog food if you so choose to. Neighbors can sure be petty.
Yeah we have a lot of acres of pure native stands (and junk like serecia and blackberry) those fields are a pain in the winter, they're a crucial loss actually in winter. I have cattle on 100 acres of it now and feeding hay every day so I can get some animal impact on it no matter the circumstances. Former CRP that couldn't be properly managed until it came out of the CRP program 2 falls ago and didn't have any water on it until this fall thanks to a new pond. Heck with it, I'm running cattle on it anyway...I have enough hay for feed, lol. It's good in summer to give the cool season forages a rest but it's sure a waste of good ground in winter.

I came up with an answer to why before I watched this episode I thought nutrition better on the cool season grass when it’s cold🤔 it started snowing just a light dusting a few days ago while I was working in the garden I found a small plant that had three yellow unopened buds I thought you are a bit optimistic! the following morning I filled four more containers it took a bit more effort but it was time well spent because the next morning The raised bed was frozen solid and I had to play in the snow instead! I cleaned the pavement pretty good the first time that morning thinking job well done never believe the weather report she said it would stop by 8:30 three centimetres accumulation! later after breakfast she changed her mind and I got to play in the snow again twice. The last time I didn’t scrape it as clean as I could have just good enough for John and Chris to park their cars when they came to work.
I love the ground lamb that I bought at my local farm store it’s wonderful. I hope that they have some left when I go shopping Saturday..my mouth is watering just thinking about future meals. Well time for a nap not sure if I shoul say good night or good morning see you later 👋 thank you for this time together 🌟💞🌟👍👍👍👍🌟💖🌟🖖🖖🖖🖖🌟💝🌟🙋🏼‍♀️

Have heard that timing of the cleaning is critical. Needs to be just before nesting season for the birds you want. Would appreciate clarification on that. Just the cleaning process isn’t to interesting, but why’s and when’s is critical.

They’re worried locals might deliberately roadkill deer to feed themselves, otherwise.

State of Washington is the same way with deer. Pick up a dead deer on the side of the road and it's a criminal offense. When I was working for the state patrol someone called in a report. A guy had hit a deer with his truck so he stopped and through it in the back of his truck. The caller had the license plate. I went to the the guy's house and there was the deer. I told him he couldn't pick up dead deer off the side of the road. I also told him there was a local game agent who would write his mother a ticket (not an exaggeration). I suggested he put the deer back before the morning because the game agent would most likely be stopping by his house the next day. Totally ridiculous in my opinion.

You know if you think about it....
Herds used to move north & south with the weather so they always had good forage. When you have 400 acres only (or whatever) you have to manage it so they always have good forage.
While the ideal is to have native species everywhere that isnt exactly managing for your herd correctly.
The natives are best crowd & farmers don't typically get along because of this i suspect.
Seems like you are doing a good job tho Greg!

have you ever sent in any feed tests on different grasses like fescue, orchard, brome etc. what their feed nutrient value is this time of year late fall vs. late winter? i think the misconception why a lot of people will leave extra grass out in pastures in the winter and not use it is they think all the snow/rain all winter on it while dormant makes the nutrient value worse than their hay

I had this concern too, but in previous vids Greg has talked about if your dogs have feed they won't attack livestock. If they don't have feed they will. I also wonder if cooking it some over a fire may reduce tendency of a dog to want red meat and be aggressive. Growing up we had a neighbor with a german sheperd. My dad was a meatcutter and would bring home bones for him. They noticed he was more aggressive after giving him bones with raw meat. They started roasting them in the oven and then giving to him. The dog enjoyed them and wasn't as aggressive. Anecdotal evidence for sure, and may be too much trouble but it worked in that case.

Conservation and game wardens may be annoying, but there are people who don't consider repercussions of over-fishing or over-grazing or over-hunting. There are folks who allow cattle into ponds and till the land into a dust bowl or spray everything with chemicals because "its easier" or "that's how I was taught" even if it doesn't make sense. Perhaps you can make an arrangement with them for cleaning up fresh deer carcasses for dog food once they are called, but if not, its a minor inconvenience and a bit of a waste. We have lost so many species on this continent to loss of habitat as well as poor land management. Perhaps it would be beneficial to see if educating the local authorities about regen ag since most people are not yet super familiar with regen ag practices.

I found a couple geese killed by a dog. I called to find out if there was any rabies going around, but was told I couldn't use the geese. (I'm Christian, Levitical law says not to eat meat previously eaten by animals, one had its throat tore out, but the other was just killed, Sui ide by dog, I thought, after losing its mate). They told me to give it back to nature, put it in a field. I would take pictures. You don't want it rotting on the road where pets and children could get a disease. You set it off in a field, gave it to nature. Your dogs aren't pets. They don't crawl into your bed at night, complain if you don't turn on the TV for them. Your dogs ARE nature. You pulled them off the road and gave them back to nature. I bet if you called the wildlife department, mentioned a dead animal on the road, thought of moving it into a field where, "nature," could take care of it, they would say do it.
