Upminster Bridge - Least Used District Line Station
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- We're counting down the least used stations line by line on the London Underground, this time to the District and the wonder that is Upminster Bridge ... and the Ingrebourne River.
You can download the Entry & Exit figures for all Tube Stations here: tfl.gov.uk/cor... (although, it will obviously spoil the series for you if you look ahead at the figures!)
Note: The Waterloo & City Line won't be done, as it's only two two stations and it's figures are ridiculously high, because the stations are Waterloo and Bank.
There's scope though to do 'Least Used...' on the Overground, DLR and Trams.
26 steps? That's the equivalent to a 15-storey building.
😂
I WAS ABOUT TO COMMENT THAT :(((
CreativeJamiePlays sorry... 😂
I'm telling you, when you're running up those stairs for the train, it feels like 15 storeys 😂
CreativeJamiePlays Lol we have the same name
1:20 That's a bird house. I've been to that area so many times.
And I thought it might have been a bee or insect hotel (or what you call them). But I reckon you do actually know. :)
Being a Rotterdam metro driver myself, I absolutely love your videos! Sure, we have our own hidden little secrets, we could make a list of least used stations, and we have our bit of history ourselves, but London is a different league 😅. Absolutely jealous of all background quirks over there! 😁
Back from Ireland for 5 minutes, and you're on it :-)
He never went to Ireland. The whole thing was filmed from a green screen studio on the Isle of Wight.
@@tomsmith5584 geoff's never been to the isle of wight!!
Geoff’s never been on a train. It’s all Green Screen!
Matthew Dunderdale he has
all 1.1 million are people going from havering sixth form back to newham
Zoe T so true
Very true indeed!
Used to live at the end of Upminster Road, used to use that station every day to travel into West Ham! I had no idea that of all the district line stations, that would be the least used now
The "What the heck is that" is a cover over a valve that is used to allow air out of the pipe as it curves upwards over the river.

It's not a Geoff Marshall video without a shot of the bin is it? :-)
I thought Kensington Olympia would be the least used station on the District Line
No, but its the least served. I believe is the Underground's least served station too, as only up to 11 District Line trains stop there per day
And it's not the least used because of the overground service
Max The Chiron what’s your favorite train?
I thought upney was
@@mrgreen4257 Upney is the closest tube station to Eastbury Manor House, a famous Tudor Era house converted into a Tudor Museum, Upney recieves thousands of tourists each year because of this, although admittedly they are mostly Primary Age School Trips, I would know, I went there on a School Trip in Year 3
Glad to see the old bench seats are still there. They were green in my day, when I was travelling up and down to London, to work. Coming home, I crossed the road and went down Hornminster Glen, which was an unmade road then; climbed up and over the railway, which has long since had houses built on it, then into Frimley Avenue.
Worth mentioning that the ‘London Loop’ walk passes by the station, then along the Ingreborne. Having walked the loop both ways and used the station as a start and end point it was nice to see the bits of the station I’d missed.
Oooh a symmetry shot with that red bench and two trains either side, thanks Geoff!!!
i totally lucked out with that ...
I always appreciate your photography Geoff
Geoff Marshall hi Geoff a very important question what is your favorite train of all time?
@@geofftech2 Can you redo the District Line’s Least Used Station as it’s now Olympia, please?
Geoff have you ever been asked by Michael Portillo to be part of the Great British Railway Journeys show? I think you guys should do a co-host series together! 😁✌️
Yay! Upminster bridge! Love that station. My grandparents live there
I live there
Used that station for my college back in the day and this video brought good memories. Also I've walked that tiny bridge many times but had no idea the station is called after that same bridge.
Jesus, this guy can make anything tfl related interesting
The station opened in 1934. Hitler's rise to power occurred the previous year. So the clockwise or counterclockwise Swastikas, the ancient symbols of auspiciousness and good luck hadn't yet fully stigmatized by its association with racism and antisemitism.
But Upminister Bridge isn't the only case.
The India House in Aldwych London near the London school of economics was built in 1930 and outside there are obvious symbols of clockwise Swastikas.
Burlington House in London Piccadilly street features swastika shapes in its exterior stonework.
The swastika-inspired design appears on the The Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London
BBC has a webpage with title: Walls, floors and rocks: England and its swastikas.
And in Wembley, where I live, there is a big Indian population. Lots of them have swastikas painted in windows or doors. For them is still a sign of good luck.
Ragtime Ragtime Thanks for the reply. I didn't know that.
uncanny. I was literally thinking the other day. what i need on my UA-cam feed is a video about a least used tube station. My phone can now read my mind. I feel inspired to search for other videos around the world for least used train stations.
It's a lovely station! Great for watching trains on the adjacent main line when the occasional steam train passes through!
The District Line...I wish it still had the D stock. At least it now has a new life as the Class 230 in Wales and on the Marston Vale Line
Avery Lopez-Baines there you are again. Voiceoverpete. John Burk.
The Class 230's haven't started yet on the Marston Vale line, there's been one on test on there, but the passenger services are still in the hands of Class 150 and 153 Sprinters. Hopefully that'll change soon.
That is when they stop catching fire.....

From all the times I've been past and through where Upminster Bridge is, I've never once been in the station. Nice interior for sure.
I know right, what’s your favorite train?

My old station as a kid in the 60s and 70s.Great memories of Q R and CO CP Stock
Please do a video on the C2C cuz I live on that line so it would be interesting to see it from your perspective
JukeBox he did talk a lot about c2c in all the stations
D Tz yeah I now but it would be nice to see a dedicated video about it
That is the first time I've ever heard it called "The Ancient Parish of Hornchurch"... and I'm from there!
Been waiting ages for this video. My favourite thing to watch. Great work. 👍👍
Fantastic video Geoff love it can’t wait for more
They should name a local pub: "The Phonebox and Swastika"
Or named the station that :) That swastika is so bizarre, Who What Why ???
According to Wikipedia the station was opened in 1934 and that design was popular in art deco at the time. Quite funny really
@@ChubbyChecker182 this was before hitler came in power in Germany so the swastika was still perceived as good luck as it was in Hinduism
love this station, come here all the time
Goodness gracious! Its been a long time since I've watched GeoffTech... and a long time since I went to London.
when the toilets are locked you're legally allowed to use the phonebox instead
I just recalled that in your 'Secrets of the District Line' video, you termed Upminster Bridge *'a popular commuter station'.* Why is that? Or is that just irony?
I love the district line, it’s one of the lines I use the most
I wouldn't have thought it'd had been Upminster Bridge as the college kids use it...
station looks pretty deserted during the day time, must explain the reasoning thanks
@@dansmith4547 I would have thought it would be Hornchurch and not Upminster Bridge from the amount of college kids. I guess I'll have to venture down to Upminster Bridge station on a school holiday and see how deserted it is
Upminster wether bridgeful or bridgeless is like a rare and mythological land to me, the possibly imaginary land at the end of the District line. I think it might be like Narnia. *this is a district line train to ...upminster, the next station is, (insert west london district line station here) I hear that so often, one day if I ever have time I'm gonig to go there to see if it really exists
Nice to see a video in my neck of the woods for a change aha
I think the red and white colours may signify Hornchurch FC, as that is the nearest station to their ground, and they play in red and white
I though it was to do with some football club in London, thanks for the information
I think the least used on the whole network is Roding Valley on the Central line.
i was thinking the same thing
well done...
Hey Geoff, Have you ever thought of doing a most distant point series? Most distant point from a station where the nearest station is a tube line? Most distant point from a bus stop?
The least used station on the Geoff line
TheImperialDiamondSpinosaurus Marshall
Stairs is the most used. Lonely bin bags are the least used
Answer to your question wooden water gate valve cover box thing
I bet they'd had problems in the past with vandals turning off the supply.
Thanks Geoff, keep up this series. On to other things, now you are back, what of the announcement that the Purple - Cross -- Elizabeth Line now won't open until 2021 !!!! ????
Yes Upminster Bridge has matrix displays, but they pretty-much never say anything other than NO SMOKING - especially West bound.
Actually in the summer they said keep hydrated and apply sun cream, what a cool addition am I right?
@@user-nu9gh3sh1p I never saw that, but I definitely approve. 😊
I live in Upminster but get off at Upminster Bridge to get on a less crowded bus 😂 I also get the district line the whole way to Whitechapel to avoid the crowded c2c 😂
Geoff I'm in London down from Leeds and I'm keeping an eye out for you 😁👍
Oo_ELECTRO_oO don’t blame you
Sofia Platini favourite train?
Dan Smith jubilee and district as love when train is outside tunnel as different views
Been waiting for my local station since these videos started. I didn't know that, that was the station was named after and don't worry no body knows what that thing is.
Even though in the area and it's nice to watch the video and get some information
I assume a video on the new Class 230 trains going into service will be forthcoming at some point?
Another great video, love the London Underground. I hope you managed to find a toilet to use?
Paul Tidd it’s alright I think he held it in haha
I wonder, are there any *bridge stations that are named after the bridge that was constructed at the same time as the station?
That is to say not after a traditional bridging point either.
Dundee Tay Bridge station? There are certainly some "Quay" and "Junction" stations which reference themselves.
Been waiting since the last video; it paid off!
My childhood station in the 60s and 70s.Q stock,R stock,CO CP Stock. And the lovely smell of brakedust
In my day commuters travelling to London, would go back to Upminster to catch the fast train to Fenchurch. Sometimes we'd get caught by the Inspectors and made to pay the extra fare.
The theme of penultimate Station on the line continues.
Oftentimes used late on last trains as it one from end of line and passengers wake up and jump off in panic and go to cab office round corner or used to when I over slept on district line...
Nice video Geoff, next week is acton depot open weekend, I hope to see you at the depot
Wow. I generally thought that at 2:02, that was your hand making that noise...
Least impressive bridge after which a train station is named?
gets my vote...
at least its not named after the tunnel its next to, which severn tunnel junction in wales is...
i thought it would be olymipia
Its prob not because its the same gateline as the overground and national rail
It tends to get quite busy when there are big events on at Olympia, that's when they get most of their passengers there, just over 2m last year, much more than Upminster Bridge.
I miss the old district line 😐
you should do a most used station series. I think the name says it all
and the medium used stations, wouldn’t that be great :)
2:03 the colour of the poles in the train are yellow. Idk why TfL couldn’t change the colour for the District and Metropolitan line (maybe Hammersmith & City line) poles. Nevertheless, they are using the same train as the Circle 🤔
1. And that's why. 2. primary colors easier to come by.
My fav station lol srsly I love it such a quiet station.
Can’t lie Kensington has to be my favourite, with that very nostalgic 20th century look
Canons Park, blackhorse road, goldhawk road and now Upminster bridge.
Just love them a simple format that says all it needs to. I know you will keep going but What happens after No1???
I wont hold my breath but I don’t doubt it will be good. Amacf
This station is very interesting for me only because it's faraway in East London and is on my favourite Tube line
Favourite train?
Upminster Bridge is literally around the corner from my cousins house.
Is it a lesser used station than Kensington (Olympia)? Or did you not include that station as it is only served during weekends (or by some peak trains)?
It's also used by Overground passengers
Olympia has fewer trains (making it the least served) but more passengers - especially as its passenger total includes those using Overground and Southern.
Yasss, I've been waiting for this for a while lol
In live there
The C2C trains are Class 357s, which is my favourite kind in the Electrostar family.
the electrostar trains are great I can’t lie
Has anybody else noticed that every single least used station so far are all the stations before the terminating station of the lines?
except South Kenton and Mill Hill East
Interesting comment you made about not doing least used on Waterloo and City line, surely as the line has two stations for that line they must have exactly the same number of passengers, unless, of course, someone does a round trip without getting out, Geoff may do that.
The figures are based on total station use; it doesn't differentiate between Lines use; so passengers counted for Waterloo on the W&C (where the W&C has its own set of gates) and Bank, where the gates serve all the Lines, will be different. If I am correct Waterloo will be the 'least used' station on the W&C.
Great stuffs
Er, did you use the bushes..... lol 😂😹
The colour scheme and decoration is a leftover from when all the stations between Barking to Upminster were BR/NSE owned and operated, before they were handed over to LT at privatisation..
With the exception of Upminster and Barking, which are still managed by C2C, all the former LMS/BR stations from Bromley by Bow to Upminster Bridge have been managed by LT since 1969, although some of them, like Upminster Bridge, built after the District Line started running beyond Barking in 1932, never had any main line services.
0:46 "building a railway bridge and then naming the station after the railway"... is this a subtle reference to Barnes Bridge station which has precisely that origin?
Thinking the same thing, love near that station always pondered about the name
*live
Interesting. I live down the road. Where does West Kensington figure in the District Line usage stats? Whenever I have got off there, I've been the only one who has done so.
District line is still my favourite line. I suppose that's what happens when you grow up using it all the time!
My nearest station was Dagenham Heathway where I only lived half a mile away.Dagenham East was pretty close, but why not build a station between Dagenham East and Elm Park as they are quite a distance from each other, like Barking and East Ham.
My guess is that the last three lines, are the Piccadilly, Metropolitan and Central lines. Might also have the W&C line, but who knows...?
I did think a bit about it, since the W&C runs in shuttle between Waterloo and Bank, i don't think it'll fit in this category, simply because i think Bank has more passengers than the stations on this list.
District is my favourite subsurface line
How many accessible Underground stations have accessible trains?
I believe in their making more, however currently we’re looking at about 5 fully fuctional
I had a brief but definite Dr. Who moment, felt a bit disappointed that there was no sound effect.
A "reverse swastika" is actually the right way round. It's called an omote manji (表卍) or simply "manji" (卍) and is an ancient Buddhist peace symbol. The swastika is actually called an ura manji (裏卍), where the word "ura" means "backwards".
At 1:15 everyone needs to start singing "I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives" by Television Personalities! :-D

This is the station I’ve just walked home from. Also it’s in Hornchurch. Oh you just said that.

What is Upminster actually called after? (Or will I find the answer to that in your Tube Station Trivia book which I have yet to purchase?)
The name comes from the Old English of upp mynster, meaning "upper church" or "the large church on high ground" (St Lawrence church in town) depending on the context. Recorded back in 1062 as Upmynstre, with a slight change to Upmunstra in the Domesday Book then evolved to Upminster over the years.
Slightly off topic - the speed of sound was first measured accurately from the tower of St Lawrence back in 1709
I use it! My local station
yay my old town
What’s the second least used station on district line I’ve googled it nothing
to be honest i am surprised that this is the least used considering that this is the main way people get to the sixth form college but still 1.1 mil is a pretty big number i guess
Several national rail stations have no Sunday services, any tube stations similarly abandoned on Sunday’s????
The Waterloo and City line gets no weekend service, although both stations are still in use
Cannon Street used to be closed on Sunday, but think all are open now.
Purpletrain delayed till september 2020
Talking of symbols which haven’t aged well, on the wall which separates Baker Street station from Marylebone Road there is a foundation stone from 1912 - I guess a new wall was big news back then - on each side of which is sculpted fasces, an ancient Roman symbol of authority and later a symbol of Italian fascism (and fascism in general). It’s a set of bound rods with an axe through the centre.
I have never even travelled through Upminster ....
Thought Kensington (olympia) would be the last used district line station, wonder how many passengers that sees a year?
Why don't you look it up? TfL publish the stats. Including Overground passengers, it had just over 2 million users in 2017, the last year for which data is available, making it the second-least used on the Distrrict and 31st least-used overall.
Is your channel logo intentionally in the middle of your video when the video is in full screen, or is my phone just having a seizure?
I thought Kensington Olympia would be the least used station on the District Line. Could it be because it is also an Overground and Southern station inflates its passenger numbers?
good point... all the same gateline...
You should do a spreadsheet with station steps data
