大きな被害を受けた岩手・野田村 ［震災4日目］

津波の被害を受けた岩手県九戸郡野田村の状況(震災4日目 : 午前11時すぎ)
村の中心部である野田村役場付近(海岸線から600～700メートルほどの距離)から周囲を見渡すと、住居という住居が破壊され、壊滅的な打撃を受けた集落の様子を一望できる。
役場に設置された災害対策本部には、全国各地から応援の消防団員らも駆けつけ、捜索・救助活動の準備を進めていた。
打ち合わせを終え、列をなして、がれきの中に踏み入っていく捜索隊員ら。
この日は、自衛隊員も含めて、総勢約700名もの人々が、捜索・救助活動にあたった。
倒壊した家々1軒1軒に声をかけ、人の気配を確認しながら進む、自衛隊員たち。
周囲には、もはや原型をとどめない、鉄くずと化した自動車なども多数散在する。
役場の北側、野田郵便局付近の県道29号線(野田・沼宮内街道)沿いでは、重機も繰り出して、がれきを撤去していた。
さらにその付近、村のシンボルともいえる愛宕神社の大鳥居は、倒壊した家屋の大きな屋根やがれきが、柱と柱の間を埋める格好で参道をふさぎ、人の往来ができない状態。
役場の南西側にある「JA新いわて野田支所」では、建物前の屋外時計が、地震直後の時刻を示したまま止まっている。この建物の中にも、水が押し寄せたため、職員らが掃除や後片づけに追われていた。

The situation at Nodamura of Kunohe district in Iwate prefecture suffering damages by the tsunami. (Fourth day following the earthquake, at past 11 a.m.) Looking around the area from the center of the village, near Nodamura town hall (600-700m from the coastline), one can see that the residential homes have been completely wiped out, the community suffering a devastating blow. At the emergency operations center set up within the town hall, firemen from across the nation rushed in, in support of the search and rescue operations.
Having finished a meeting, the rescue team forms a line to enter the debris. This day, approximately 700 people including the Self-Defense forces took part in the search and rescue. Calling out to each of the collapsed houses, the Self-Defense forces try to pick up any sign of life. Surrounding them are several cars lacking resemblance to its former self, now just iron scraps scattered about. To the north of the city hall, near Noda Post Office, along prefectural road 29 (Noda/ Numakunai Highway) heavy machines are sweeping debris off the street.
Nearby, the Atago Shrine and its great archway symbolizing the village are covered by the large roofs of collapsed homes and debris, filling in the gaps between pillars and ultimately blocking the traffic of the pathway.
To the southwestern side of the town hall, at "Japan Agricultural Cooperatives Shin-Iwate Noda branch", the clock tower in front of the building still points to the time just after the earthquake occurred. Since water rushed to this building as well, the staff are busy tidying up and cleaning.
