So I’m now back to 1970 as a six year old boy running around the coffee table with my small sister chasing me, cowboys and Indians style. No idea why this was our mode of fun. Good television, my relatives, some friends, my mother and my sister are no longer around, but this memory triggers those times again. Growing old is so much better with nostalgic film/video on the internet.
To happier and innocent times. Best wishes to those of you who must be around my age who remembers this too.

I remember as a kid being allowed to switch the tv on and waiting for it to warm up, Then the test card would appear and a countdown would appear this was about 9 in the morning, Then all of a sudden this wonderful music would start and I loved the pictures of the Gulls and Horses and general views of Kent and Sussex and I knew there might be tv treats in store when the programmes started if I was lucky, Good old Southern Television you are sorely missed.

Thanks. A great tune reminds us of the past good times. Long shall the good times remain!

I remember this film and music very well from primary school. Our class sat on the floor in a semi-circle before the school TV to watch school programmes which were preceded by this wonderful opening film. Funny how even though in black and white we coloured the scenes in our minds. Never forgotten!!

I lived just south of Croydon, well within the London ITV area. However I remember watching this as I had an aunt that lived in Rudgwick near Horsham, West Sussex that our family used to visit regularly when I was a child/teenager in the 1960's and she received both Southern TV and Rediffusion / ATV London with equally good reception. An extra ITV channel often gave a great choice of programme back then, unlike nowadays. I remember that I was quite envious of her having an extra channel compared to us at my home.

I grew up with those scenes and remember the first broadcast from Chillerton Down, Isle of Wight as a 7 year old.

A trip down memory lane indeed. I remember in 1958 at the age of 7 sitting in front of the telly eagerly awaiting the first broadcast "From Chillerton Down" Isle of Wight and there it was. What an opening! I never forgot the music and the film scenes. It made such an impact.

FACT: Southern's successor, TVS were refrered to as "Portakabin TV" because they operated from cabins in the Southern carpark in the months prior to taking over the franchise in 1982.

Addinsell "Southern Rhapsody" evokes southern England like Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" evokes 1930s New York.

Yes, lovely atmospheric piece of music by Richard Addinsell who is mainly remembered for the Warsaw Concerto written for the film Dangerous Moonlight. I believe he was commissioned to write this Southern Rhapsody for the new South Coast television station when it began broadcasting. Try and listen to the full version of this music which has a very melodic central part featuring the oboe. The following link will give the full version of this music.
