🏈 St Kilda player Dylan Roberton collapsed on the field in 2018 playing against Geelong. Roberton missed almost 2 years of footy after that, and only played 1 more AFL game, then retired in 2020. 03 04 2024
Yep, copped a massive hit from Ablett Snr near the end of the second quarter breaking a rib or 2. Now either at the time of the hit or later during the match the broken rib(s) ended up puncturing a lung. He played out the rest of the match and his voice was slowly getting higher in pitch. He collapsed at the final siren and was taken to Hospital, didn't get time to be presented his premiership medal. If the club doctor or nurse hadn't noticed and inserted a needle to release the air he would have died at the ground. Dermott Brereton had 3 ribs broken at the very first bounce of the '89 GF by Mark Yeates, it was a revenge hit because in round 6 that season Brereton ran through Yeates and ruptured one of his testicles. Brereton also tore a kidney in the 89 GF and was pissing blood at half time.
These 2 stick out for me, not so much near death but pretty close 2009 Ted Richards vs Carlton - A collision with Fevola left him with a punctured lung and broken ribs and I remember on the TV seeing him coughing up blood the whole time 2006 Blake Caracella vs Brisbane - A knee to the head from Notting causing a broken neck, fractured vertebrae and spinal cord bruising almost left him paralysed
Not to Mention Jonathon Brown coming back from his favial reconstruction only to cop a Freo players knee to his rebuilt face requiring another facial reconstruction
Peter Sumich almost died from Danny Southerns chokehold in the 90’s (it was very close)… but as I know, because he’s an Eagle you purposely didn’t include him. You didn’t include Barry Hall king hitting Brent Staker in the suspensions video. You didn’t include my boys getting over the line twice after the siren twice against port Adelaide. You didn’t include my club is the first non-Victorian side to win the flag. I could go on and on and on. Every negative detail about my teams mistakes in the past is in “perfect detail”, but every positive is omitted. I thought this was a sheer coincidence at first, but when there are so many it’s now a pattern. Every single video (most) I have seen has a subliminal put down against West Coast (“do you agree with the Dom Sheed goal umpire decision? That’s for you to decide…”.). We completely earned that premiership in 2018 and we will never apologise for being the better team that day (Collingwood blew the 5 goal lead early… why do you never mention that?). Everytime you have mentioned that kick you have created the impression that we didn’t deserve the flag. I know you hate my team (West Coast Eagles), everyone is entitled to their opinion… but can you at least pretend to be fair in the future? I’m kinda sick of being seen as “drug cheats who stole the 2018 flag”. Be fair across the board and cut the crap. If you said to your self while editing “I’m gonna subliminally bash the eagles in a clever way, no one will notice!!”. Well sorry Keelan, but I noticed. We are a proud club and I don’t appreciate it. I have nothing for love for your team the Sydney Swans, I have never said a bad word against them in my life. So I apologise if I get emotional, but can you stop kicking us in the balls and try and be more impartial? When your too much of a pussy to admit when one of our players almost died, but then slam us in every other video… I will call you out
In 2018 before game 1 AFL season, Robert Walls predicted us to get wooden spoon and we proved everyone wrong. After we made the granny Tony Jones said the Eagles making it was a “waste of a grand final position because they never play well at the MCG”. The game starts… Collingwood get off to a 5 goal lead, we come back from it and work our ass off. Then Dom Sheed kicks the match winner… and yes I admit the umpire missed a free kick there, it went our way… but we were the better team. Adam Treloar said we deserved to win in an interview with Will Schofield, and I’m so sick of Collingwood fans claiming we didn’t deserve it. I’ll mention an incident where people got robbed… the childhoods from Joffa after he got arrested. If pies fans don’t want to give us credit for winning that day they can shove it
Don’t make the excuse of “I forgot that one”… the Peter Sumich/Danny Southern incident was probably the most well known near death thing in the 90’s. You hate us so you didn’t put it in
Phil Davis ruptured a kidney in a match, nearly died. Bizarrely, he played out the match after the injury occurred.
What a warrior

That’s partially what makes the 89 Grand Final go down in football folklore.
john greening nearly died in 1972 after being king hit by a st kilda player and got put into a coma

Neale Sashse was left a quadriplegic in a match between Footscray and Fitzroy in 1975

Graham Polak getting hit by a tram and beginning the expression “he’s been Polak’sd” is another near fatal incident.
