Oil pastels will never dry. There are some artwork that is over 100 years old and can still be reworked. I have several paintings that I had done decades ago that I reworked. Just a thought. I'll be using this video as what one might do in mixed media. (BTW- I teach oil pastel techniques, but never gave it a thought to using for mixed media. Thanks)
Oh my gosh surly everyone has the hamburger and hotdog system by now. You give it away “free” almost every time you do a video! I love your videos and you give away so many “freebies”. Just follow along and guess what. Before long you’ll have a lot of knowledge and a “free” education on mix media! We can all master this beautiful art. You’re by far the best teacher out there. I can’t wait to see what else you have to educate us with. Did I mention all the “Freebies “! 🙌🏻💥❤️
Thank you Sheila for your support! I love providing Freebies when I can! If you are looking to deepen your education, check out my art school and art books! Head to www.awesomeartschool.com :)
I like the smooth substrate surface better than a more toothy one. I haven't tried them with acrylics yet, but I will soon! I can't wait to try this lady! She's so awesome!
I usually paint in oil pastels. Recently I decorated the cover of my watercolor sketchbook, and then y covered the whole painting with Liquitex satin varnish, it worked great, it hardened and Im able to use the sketchbook without worring that the oil pastel painting will come off .
Absolutely! create.awesomeartschool.com/mixed-media-hot-dogs You should definitely check out my other videos on this channel! Lots of painting videos! I also have an online art school where I teach mixed media, drawing, and magical art! Check it out! www.awesomeartschool.com
Your girl is fabulous. Love her... The only fixative for oil pastels that I have found is Sennelier D'Artigny Oil Pastel Fixative, which as the name suggests is designed specifically to fix oil pastels. And as you suggest pastels last layer of pigment for sure. Love your hamburger system printout. Thankyou. Im learning so much from watching you @karencampbell with experimenting with the oil pastels right along with you and im learning alot and love the idea of oil pastels over acrylic because I don't like white paper tooth showing through either. Ive used watercolor and gouache underneath in mixed media under the oil pastels but never tried over acrylic, thats so cool and Im trying it today. Sounds fun. I like the Paul Reubens oil pastels are super soft creamy and easy blend and use light handed, they feel a wee bit sticky but they stick put to the smooth surface I've noticed better. I love the Paul Reubens white especially but thats just me. Im going to try your suggested brand next from last video. Im loving the oil pastels but my main challenge is Im trying to draw details over them with the oil pastels on top of oil pastels and thats when I get muddy and its really hard to do so I've got to practice using them more loosely like you did her. Your girl is awesome.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I really appreciate it! I totally get the challenges! I am experiencing them in real time! Fun to learn! You've got this!
Wow, I have alot to learn . Today my husband gave me oil pastels. I gave them a try on water colour paper by themselves. I like them but really know how to use them properly. thank u for this. It is helpful
Hi Karen! I hope you're having a wonderful Christmas! It's my favorite time of year! Yes, I want the 32 page PDF. I get so excited about art when I'm looking at your videos and your PDFs and I just have so many ideas! I love your art, I love your videos, I've asked for your books for Christmas! Have a wonderful holiday season, be safe, God bless you!
Yes same!! Thanks! I've been messing around with Gambsol and Linseed oil (cuz that's what I had from my oil painting class) and they both work so that's great and makes it all so much easier. Thanks for commenting!
Wow that is awesome, I have oil pastels , but never use them, I have oil paintings and I dried them with special gang. Your video show how we can do your burger, is just so good to be able to mix our products, I learning so much from you Jaren and you are so enthusiastic that encourage us to follow you, is always so good feeling doing a class with you. Thank you so much for this video, l8ve it ❤
I did my fox which I decided to make a white cat instead because I felt the fix was just too hard for me to start off with, on brown Bee paper and it was actually okay. This looks really fun to try on a slicker surface. Your girl is beautiful!
Have always heard a big NO using oils and acrylics - love that you shared your "tryout" with a great result! Have to test it soon and would love to have the link for the hot dog (like it - no calories...).
Omg! I’m loving this series! I already have the Mungyo oil pastels but haven’t used them yet! Can I please have the HotDog system link? Thank you Karen for being such a generous Awesome art teacher!!
Hi Loren! Thank you so much! I am so glad to hear it has been helpful! Here is a link to the pdf. Enjoy! create.awesomeartschool.com/mixed-media-hot-dogs/
I would like your 32 page Hot Dog packet please! Thanks for sharing this great resource. I’m excited to use it to explore the correlated UA-cam videos and see this method applied. Thanks again!
Not sure where to ask for your Free Hot Dog cheatsheet! I love working with oil pastels, so this lesson about the use or not of clear gesso, Thank you!
I use oil pastels on just about anything, up to and including Uart, which is sanded paper at 400 to 800 grit. The finished piece looks like an oil painting. It does take a whole lot of layers though. I am so happy to find others that use oil pastels. Thanks.
Hello Karen, can I have the Hot Dog link? I love the oil painting look, but I have never been brave enough to try them out. Also can this (Hot Dog layering) be done on paper, or just canvas?
So Hot Dog is just my friendly term for any mixed media project that’s 4 or fewer layers. Those layers can be any number of supplies! And the PDF I’m giving away have over 20 different examples! So fun! So to answer your paper question, totally just depends on the hot dog. The substrates are also listed in the PDF for each one tho! So makes it easy to follow ❤️
Also, you can use oil pastels on just about any surface. If it stays on the surface, go for it. (The only surface I've had difficulty with is metal, but we did it. Glass-not so much. So just about anything goes.
Definitely check out last week's video! It is in real time as I work on another project (a cute winter fox). That should help with getting started! Here is the hot dog pdf link as well! create.awesomeartschool.com/mixed-media-hot-dogs/
Yes for soft pastels you need paper with texture but not for oil pastels , sometimes Im using oil pastels in my sketchbook, and medium for oil painting on the top for blending and in 7 days it is almost dry out
Gloves in a Bottle! You can read more about them on the Blog (links too) www.karencampbellartist.com/blog/do-oil-pastels-acrylics-work-well-together-for-mixed-media-art-projects

Oh Lordy!! I don’t know about that one! Would be transferring all that stick back to the pans? And for the cost! Yikes! I don’t know if I could do it!!! You try it and let me know 😂😂

I agree with you 💯%. I use oil pastels on daily basis and NO WAY I WOULD USE TEXTURED PAPER. I even use construction paper sometimes. 😅
Right!? Everyone is screaming Tooth! But my gut is screaming otherwise 😂
