What Are the Dangers of Corrosion or Low Voltage on My Bow Thruster Battery?

- Here is a great question from Melissa - we don't often think about the effect an older lead acid battery can have on a bow thruster. She writes, "It is winter in the Pacific Northwest; I am not cruising, so my boat is at the dock on shore power. I was there yesterday and checked the lead acid bow thruster battery. It had some corrosion on the post, and the water level was low (still covering the plates). I understand that there is a bigger issue and that I could actually damage the thruster?"

Thank you fellow boater and electrical wizard to start making videos again, i have enjoyed your colleague's videos but its not just the same without you.
Thanks for these videos they are so clear and informative. If I had these 10 years ago 1) I would not have blow out my alternator, and 2) I think my batteries would have lasted several more years!
Used to be that Deep Cycle Batteries were for running light loads for long durations. I shoot for no more than a 20 amp load. If you can give that battery a break by an external power supply, it would be better for our old friend the Lead Acid Battery.
I would just buy agm battery... It is slightly more expensive but don't have a hassle to monitor and top up
Buy a battery tester and check all your batteries individually every 6 months then you can make sure you never have the inconvenience of failure.
