    To us, John Frusciante was a misunderstood, brilliant musician when he used drugs, but if we see these people on the streets and they arent a famous musician we view them as dirtbags. its unfair.

      Obviously not? The junkies in my area DO look like dirtbags. And Frusciante did too. The difference is that he's rich and an artist and not completely wasting his life and money on drugs and eventually quit.

    The fact that one person says "that's beautiful", and another person says "WTF? This isnt art!" - THAT'S what makes it art.

    In nearly ten years of consuming Frusciante's work, this is the first time I've watched this video and heard this version of this song. It saddens me in a strange way to see this. Very haunting images.

    I was not sure what his band mates meant when they said 'they were sure John was going to die' until this video. You can see the death & insect like features on his face here where people lose themselves...John came real close....thankful he's better.

    I read the comments beforehand I didn't think I could watch it, but I knew I had to make myself. As I watched and listened, I cried...to see him bleed, to see the pain...it's truly heartbreaking..but to know that he survived this, to know that the strength and bravery it must have took to break free of this fills me with so much hope. Thank you John for showing us all how to survive, for giving me strength to do things I never thought I could. Your soul is beautiful and your music is my freedom.

      What utter bullsh^t. This guy did hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage to property and hotels. Had millions in the bank. Broke huge contracts & totally f&cked his band & managers out of sheer selfishness. He's not that talented. The hype is utter bullsh^t. When the RHCP fans grow up they will see this phony creepy junkie for what he really was.

    This is sad to see,he fucked his arms so bad from shooting up he had to have skin grafts to repair them.He had to have all his teeth removed and his jaw reconstructed because of infections from all the drug use. Check out a video called "Stuff" filmed by Johnny Depp in John's house in 93 and it looks like an episode of Hoarders.Follow that with "John Frusciante VPRO(1994) documentary and "John Frusciante"s Life" and you'll see how bad things got for him before it got even worse. This video just adds to that horror.His story is the stuff of movies,he should be dead..If someone can come back from those depths than anyone can and I hope he's inspired a million addicts to follow his lead.You don't get much lower than he did which makes his recovery that much more amazing.He got an interesting way of looking at the world,very positive attitude and seems like one of the sweetest guys on the planet who wouldn't hurt a fly. He's one of my favorite guitarist and I'm glad he's still with us.

    • @SuperSaiyanScandinavian
      @SuperSaiyanScandinavian 10 років тому +3

      His arms are mainly scarred up because he got badly burned in a house fire. Then again, I think he was high and caused the fire by mistake, so I guess you could say it was the heroin, but heroin doesn't do that to your skin. Also he was abusing other drugs at the time, and they were the main cause him having to get false teeth and having to have his jaw reconstructed. I'm not trying to downplay heroin, cos it's a horrible drug that should never be touched, but out of all the super hard drugs, it has the least noticeably physical affects on people. It's obvious if you're poor and have to live a hard life on the streets and suck dick, but if you're rich, it's not that hard to hide an addiction, cos it doesn't really show. As long as you can find time to go score some heroin without going through much withdrawal and you don't hide your injection marks, then it's hard for people to know. Just as an example, think about that guy from Glee. He looked like a normal guy and actually looked young for his age. It's things like Meth that really show. Coke certainly shows too, but it takes longer, and will the mental part with be the most noticeable at first.

    • @markyncole
      @markyncole 10 років тому +1

      You're right,I've had junkie friends who hid it,I knew but an outsider might not. Never tried and never will, watched my brother go through withdrawal and it's not a nice thing to see someone you love fucked up like that. I was put in a situation once were a neighbor OD. They knocked on my door for help and if it wasn't for my best friend's military training he'd be dead so I've seen the horrors of this drug. Frusicante did burn his arms BUT he was also shooting up improperly,basically just sticking the needle where ever in his arm. You're right about it's ability to be stealth in people who hid it from the common person. never understood the attraction because there's never a happy outcome to using it once it's got t's hooks in you and that risk t's to great to even debate but people still cross that line thinking they won't get hooked but find out they were wrong like everyone before them.

    • @SuperSaiyanScandinavian
      @SuperSaiyanScandinavian 10 років тому +5

      markyncole it turns out I was a little wrong actually. I just read up on it, and Frusciante said that although he was burned in the fire, most of his scarring is due to injecting drugs. But he made it clear that it was injecting coke that truly did it, and not so much the heroin. Apparently the heroin lasted long enough, but he had to inject frequently when using coke.
      yeah, people always like to find an excuse for trying things or justify why they do things. it's insane that some people try heroin because they've heard of some people being able to try it once or twice and never again; however, those people are pretty much freaks of nature and are EXTREMELY rare. Then you have some people who say they don't have an addictive personality. Sure it helps to not have an addictive personality, but that really only helps for soft drugs, but it means nothing when dealing with coke, meth, heroin and other opiates etc. Sorry to hear about your friends and brother. Such an uncool drug, and it doesn't just destroy the user.

    • @gagecampbell92
      @gagecampbell92 10 років тому +5

      queerp I think you need to research just a tad bit more. If you would read up further on it, you would learn that John never learned how to properly inject, nor did he learn how to do these drugs "cleanly" (used needles, dirty water, etc.), and this can DEFINITELY lead to all the abscesses he had.
      Still, when it's all said and done, John, Anthony, and all of them would probably tell you that even though they'd never touch the substances again, it made them who they are today. Drugs aren't bad, drug addiction is bad. And like you said, it is possible to "experiment" without getting addicted...I'm a living breathing example of that. I've tried my share of drugs, but I just stick to the natural herb.

    • @itsPerception
      @itsPerception 10 років тому

      queerp One word: abscesses. If you don't know how to properly shoot, like John, combined with a very poor personal hygiene/shooting hygiene, shooting heroin can cause abscesses which can severely scar up your arms. And Frusciante shot coke I believe too. He was probably sticking himself every 10 minutes when binging on that shit & banging it.Gage Campbell is certainly right with everything he said above.

  • @Kanelikaakao
    @Kanelikaakao 17 років тому +2

    This makes me cry.. But John himself doesn't think that his drug years (92-97) were the 'dark period' in his life, in fact he says that in those few years he learned a lot about life.. But I'm so happy that he decided to stop using drugs, I can't even imagine what would happen if he would have continued..

    To me, this song is an invitation. An invitation for you to explore your deepest feelings. And, of course, a hurtful journey.
    I guess it's impossible for someone to hear this song and don't feel anything. A mix of feelings: at the same that it is extremely dark and sad, it is pure beauty. Something only Frusciante is capable of.
    If not the greatest musician ever, certainly one of the few that made music it's extreme way of expression.

    @letshakehands I think it came across wrong. My point was that the focus doesn't belong on the mechanics and skill of the needle use. It belongs on the human being who is brave enough to let us see him at his worst. His best is the very best but thats easy to show. He lets us see the whole of it. I'm not that brave, most aren't.I haven't done IV street drugs either. But have had some bad times and honestly believe many others have. Just act out(or in) differently. Sorry for all the typos.

    Much of it is very ugly in fact, but all so real. Im glad he decided to record those things on a 4 track, its incredibly intimate. Without hands on production and top 40 intention, theres virtually no separation between his vision and you, which, when you really admire an artist, is a very valuable experience. I think a few songs on smile are plain awful, but its great for the most part. Niandra was perfect, he wont ever top that. Just wasn't the same after he joined the chili's again.
