Why does this guy sound like he's narrating a trailer for a michael bay movie
Bracer Jack it's not a compliment but it's not an insult. just european humor that doesn't really make sense but leavs people in doubt.
Alexander Tamayo Thanks for the support, but dude, why are you using my picture as your UA-cam Banner ? It's creeping me out.
Alexander Tamayo I think the UA-cam mobile app is acting up then. Anyway, all of your replies are either creative or supportive, you sound like someone I wish I could spend time with.
I was thinking exactly the same...haha
Alexander Tamayo, you beat me to it. Good job.
Bracer Jack, don't mind the haters, it makes your videos very entertaining. Very cool.
I was just waiting for him to say "In a world..."
underrated
But 'cept for.. "In asian", right?
Please ignore all of the people who disliked and are complaining about your voice. This video is GREAT and I want to thank you for taking the time to make it. People on youtube are WAAY to spoiled and entitled considering they're getting FREE information. I clicked on this video to learn about Photogrammetry vs 3D Scanner and that's exactly what I got. I don't care how your voice sounds, the information is what's important. You spoke very clearly and I understood everything you said. That's all that matters. Thank you!
Thank you for being so kind :D
never fall asleep at a party, robots! this guy will draw all over you, 3D scan you, and share it on the internet!
Astral134 Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Well done. Don't fuss if he doesn't narrate it as some might like. He spent many hours making a really useful video that may save you hundreds of dollars. Get a grip.
Thank you, I wish I have a friend like you in real life that backs me up :D Hope you also have a friend that backs you up too !
Thanks! I'm totally new on this subject and this was very informative.
Thank you Bracer Jack, that was so informative. You helped me out a lot!
Great video ... thanks- also your fun style lifted my mood on a low morning, so thanks again :)
Hair spray! It's cheap, you can get it anywhere, you can wash it off with warm water. You angle it a bit and spray from like 2 feet distance so it clumps together by the time it lands on the object, and it creates a dull layer, makes dark bits appear less dark too.
Really ? Nice !!!
Seriously if this works and kills the shine, you will be helping a lot of people here !
I love the short answer up front! The rest of the video was exactly the info I was looking for! I’m new at this and wondered which photogrammetry program works best for a Mac that is reasonably priced?
Make sure that you DO NOT pay a single cent, after trying out all the programs out there the BEST quality I have EVER gotten was from a free program called MeshRoom and it is SO amazing that the best quality comes from a free program !
This video is literally perfect
Pety Thank you Pety, thank you so much.
Excellent explanation. I learned something new today thanks to you. Subscribed.
This was a great video... I am planning on doing photogrammetry for future projects and building difficult surfaces. And you're awesome. SUBBED!
I knew nothing about either of these technologies. This is a great tutorial! Thanks! Subscribed.
I don't know who you are, but you are very supportive and I just want to say Thank You.
You can use christmas decoration snow spray to matte the shiny surfaces. 3D scanners may get cheaper but photoscanning software may get keener too. You never know.
good video with good information. it got me thinking... now i know why my photogrammetry was not working as well as i had hoped. Not enough detail! i will try to put stickers/removeable tape on it instead of drawing on it. hopefully that will add some texture allowing me to get the smoothe parts bettter! thanks.
Cool Beans :D
And there will probably be more features for photogrammery, some that may fix the shiny surface problems.
Yes, hopefully eventually.
Thanks for the video and clearing the Photogrammetry vs 3d Scanner subject in such detailed. It pretty much answer all my questions. My main language is Spanish and English is my second language. I had trouble understanding most youtubers as most of them are Tony Stark fast talkers in such complex subject as digital scanners. Yours was very clear and with a little humor. You save me from trowing away money on a 3d scanner.
elnaco sexy I am so happy to hear that and you are so kind to share your appreciation with me.
Yeah, an infrared scanner would be good in the dark but you won't have much luck getting texture color in the dark.
When I am using the XZY Scanner, I would sometimes turn off the lights because surprisingly, it lose tracker way less that way...I know why but man that is another video to explain :D
I like your presentation ..
Thank you :D
What clear, professional and fun presentation. Thanks!
Thank you too !
Why so many dislikes??? This video is awesome!
The guys inflections make this near impossible to listen too. I dont understand why he didnt just talk normally.
Very well done! Thanks a lot
You are welcome :D
That poor robot toy. You've drawn a ridiculous looking beard onto that thing LOL
Great video, thanks!
I've gotten into photoscanning over the last 5 years or so. Super excited to see how popular this is becoming. :>
Yes Indeed ! Brave New World ! :D
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about it in the comment :D
It's changed the entire way I view 3d content creation. Being able to sample the world to build a game environment from a library of things I've experienced in reality is surreal and wonderful. Thanks for such competent coverage of the subject.
Curio Fawkstrawt It really is ! However, most of the things I like to digitize are smooth and shiny in nature and the idea of spraying things on them to matte them is a little work.
For smooth objects, I use a light dusting of baby powder and typically get great results with a makeup brush. It is a pretty tricky workflow to pull off at times. :)
Hi, Jack! I enjoyed so much your video. It makes me laugh and nicely done video. Thank you.
You are welcome Carlo Padillo :D
Brilliant technique.
SwankeyMonkey Thank you !
Cool stuff mate
Thank you :D
And Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas bro@@BracerJack
Interesting. Thanks Jack.
Jim
Thank you Jim !
Use a turntable for the PART (like for plants from IKEA, 5$), and put the 3D Scanner on a tritop. Then rotate the part. That way you have a much more stable system.
Great video. Thank you so much. I was worried I was going to have to buy a scanner just to get started but I can just use my 5D! That's got great resolution!
well i have been working in the field of 3D-Scanning for almost 2 years now , ofc i never used a consumer lever 3D-scanner but i can assure you that on large scale, complex geometric shapes and dark areas u will need a scanner , how ever photogrammetry always gives the best textures results, so my conclusion is that u use both scanners for geometry and photos for textures and u get the sweetest results.
Abanoub Fawzy What a perfect reply to my video ! Thank you !
you are welcome. looking forward for more videos, feel free to contact me if you have any questions hopefully i could help :)
You might also consider spraying the item with plastidip. if you have a high enough resolution camera, you can pull texture out of flat smooth surfaces.
Let me know how it works for you.
Well Done
Thank you Tom B !
an easy way to make sure you get every angle with photogrammetry is to record video at a low framerate and then just walk around the subject a few times, that way you can't forget an angle.
For a quality mesh I cannot agree. Crisp, in focus low iso and low compression artefacts are critical for good geometry.
How about mixing the two to get a potentially better result. And would you be able to combine the two using blender or something like it
Yes, there are programs out there that allows you to combine multiple photogrammetry derived models together to cover up holes or missing data.
What about spraying the shiny objects with a clear matte polyurethane?
Very good ! Yes :D Remember to also spray in some patterns for the tracker to track.
so... buy a few cans of matte plastidip and spray whatever you need to photogram with a random assortment of colours. then peel it off after.
Good idea!
Can photogrammetry be used for car interiors and exteriors in the same pass? Or if I took photos of every square inch of my house, room by room, would it reconstruct it or does it only work on simple objects?
It can, as long as you take enough shots of multiple angles and there are not too many shiny things that will "throw off" the calculation.
good editing, but it makes me feel weird the trailer for action movie voice, have fun
Thank you and thank you, I see that you are growing your channel ! Good job ! Don't stop ! You are reaching one thousand subs soon !
Bracer Jack Oh, haha I don't care about my channel, actually at the end of my videos I ask people to not subscribe, keep. up the good work!
You too !
Great video! Would love an updated video in today's capabilities. Does photogrammetry still hold up today?
How did you know what I am planning next !!!
But that video will take a few weeks to finish [you might understand when you see it] so subscribe and stay tune !
@@BracerJack awesome! You got my sub, can't wait!
@@PoseidonProductions It will take a while though, can't reveal too much at the moment but your instinct is correct, we have come a long way, stay tune !
this is great, i hav hurd about this phtoscaning thing alot , but i never know what kind of softwear to use for it
You can download meshroom here:

Excellent video!! I hope scanners get cheaper
I hope so too !
Bruh, I want you to follow me around and narrative my life.
Well, if you could pay me well enough, why not ;p ha ha ha
But seriously, thanks for the compliment !
I use a app on my Iphone 11 pro which does exactly a great job that some higher end devices do. I'm using the app called TRnio
Nice !
Thankyou for a clear video and explanations :)
Thank you for taking the time to drop by and show your appreciation, it makes me happy :-)
I love your commentary
Thank you !
Hi , I Just Came Across your video , Query,,,,,,,, Can you put both "photog. AND 3D Scan Together to make a better Copyand / or Higher Quality Image ???????????? Thanks
Unless your 3D scanner is very VERY expensive, photogrammetry's result is so much better, it wouldn't be significantly improved with any normal 3D scanner.
Why not combine both visual data via a DSLR & a infrared scanner combo with over under configuration?
The quality between the two methods can be so different that overlaying both might actually lower the quality of the resulting model.
Thanks for this video ! Do you have any tutorial to make Crumpled Paper 3D scanning ?
As long as the paper is textures, photogrammetry should still be possible I think.
It's good that 3D scanning is getting into our homes. At work I'm working with ATOS Triple Scan from GOM and that's quite a different league. :D But for €800K
Agreed, I still CAN'T Believe how ridiculously priced some 3D Scanner is. I would buy a house with that kind of money.
Bracer Jack Yeah, that's for sure, but industrial metrology with 0.01mm scan precision isn't cheap these days, wondering how long it would take to have this sort of technology in our homes right next to a 3D printer. :)
Nice work! Love the commentary...very useful.
Excellent vid thanks a lot
You are welcome :D
Could you project texture on to an object to make photogrammetry work without desecrating the object? You would of course have to ensure that the projector and object maintained exactly the same positions for all pictures. (don't bump anything while moving the camera around) I suppose you might want a second set of photos with the projector off for coloring the model.
Excellent Question !
Yes projecting light on smooth surfaces will work, but here are the things you need to make sure of.
1: The projection must be SHARP ! NO BLUR ! Or else the software will go "Huh...where is the edge on that line that is suppose to be there ? Is it there or not there ?!!" on you.
2: Yes like you say, you CANNOT accidentally block off the light, or else, you effectively created another pattern as far as the software is concern.
it looks like you could potentially use bits of colored tape that you cut into small marker shapes, or just scotch tape and then apply a marker to that and then peel off after, although that's difficult on irregular surfaces. Would that work?
Also, what software are you using for the photogrammetry? The results are impressive.
Or those little confetti size, coloured stickers they sell at office supply stores. I also thought of spattering water based finger paints with a tooth brush, as long as it's a smooth, non-porous surface. (like glossy plastic)
What about talcum powder to take to shine of plastic
That's a good idea !
And also the surface cannot be "featureless/smooth", there must be some imperfections/features/dirt/whatever for the program to track and identify.
Wouldn't a pre-scan with a 3d-scanner, with a very large grid be a very good method to automatically determine how large the object is and then use software to calculate the optimal settings for that object?
Pretty much like regular old-school flatbed-scanners used to only scan the way you told them, but now offer support to scan various parts of a page with different resolutions, after a pre-scan is made.
To me, it seems more like a limitation of current software, than a limitation of 3d-scanning in general.
I think, with scanners and their software, especially in combination with printers (2-in-1) could give us extreme increase in detail in the future. If you could scan an object in your printer and then use the scanner of the printer to verify that the print is within specifications, sending necessary changes to the software during runtime, 3d-printing will definitely take a leap forward in my opinion.
Together with multi-filament-printing and using different filament-strengths on the same print, I think we have a long way to go to make 3d-printing how it's supposed to be ;-)
I think they'll eventually develop algorithms that can both remove specular details and reconstruct reflective surfaces in photogrammetry.
That would be great !
Very nice. Keep on doing that nice work. I like it very much. Great presentation !!!
Thank you so much bro :D
I love the video about the Haptic Engine !
Thank you so much for clicking the Like Button!
could you please say the name of the program to make the photogrammetry?
stylac thank you Man, you are doing a great job on your channel!
What an amazing list ! Some I haven't even heard of ! Thanks !
It's really very nice of you to show where you get your source from, I might even post this video on the other sub reddit !
Thank you for being awesome !
I have gave you a shout out in /r/3Dscanning by the way, because you inspired my desire to post it there, thank you !
Should I post it there ? Maybe you can post it there for me.
would Photogrammetry be better if you took a video and broke it down into frames? get alot more photos close together... get cleaner scans? or too much information to process and it take forever?
also what if you used the flash to get no shadows and better lighting conditions?
that's actually worse, because video frames contain less information than normal pictures. Read this www.instructables.com/id/3d-Scan-Anything-Using-Just-a-Camera/
yeah... so from what i read you would want a camera that doesn't compress, is fast enough to not blur and has good resolution.. sounds expensive but realistic
also what about using neural network up-scaling for clearer scans
Nathan King Doesn't work, but I like your enthusiasm. ;)
NN's would shift some patterns and would generate "random" (trained) patterns, which look realistic, over it. Everytime new patterns.
BUT you could definitively learn neural networks to "Photogramm" in almost realtime with some compressed video input.
Would be a combination of Convolutional Nets, Backpropagated Nets and so on
what about structured light scanning? i think structured light wins by far
I have no idea what that is :-) I am learning something new from you :D
nice vid. however... why don't you put the programs / hardware used in the description ? that would be really helpful! im trying to get into photogrammetry on a shoestring budget...
Hi thanks for the comment, I didn't do so because this video is software agnostic, there are plenty of free software that can do this, someone have listed it, I have no idea how to cross link comments sorry.
Nice job, thank you.

Thanks for this concise review!
Thank you for your appreciation !
Can someone explain why the scanner did not pick up the visor on the red ranger helmet?
Infrared light still works a lot like normal light in that it can be absorbed by dark colors, so the black visor (and black colors in general) can still give 3d scanners a hard time.
Dang, well thanks for explaining bubba, I do appreciate it.
Because it "reflects" the infra light emitted by the scanner in a way that is not conducive to how the scanner interpret the returning data :D
Thank you for your videos.
I have an observation with my limited experience with scanning.
Would you have been better off using spray on magniflux (white titanium oxide) in a spray can, to deglaze the object?
In the second test you probably didn't need the lumpy baking soda which I think made your result lumpy.
Could you please try that with a smooth surface with a dulling agent and post the results?
It seems like the comparison was unfair...
You can google the magniflux or I'll send a link if you can't find it.
Thank you.
which software did you used for photogrammetry? sorry if you already explained and i didn't catch that. is there any free online web application which i can try?
I am using MeshRoom, it is FREE and it is very VERY GOOD. Better than most paid photogrammetry software !
Eyo, have you tried using a polarizing filter to get rid of reflexions on shiny surfaces?
Hello Zemesis, even with polarizing filters, photogrammetry only works if there are patterns for the software to track, so remember to pattern it up ;p
hi, how about latest samsung note 10 plus 3d scan ?😬
I have never used it, have you tried it Bruce Mui ? How is your experience with it ?
Cool video, very in depth comparison, well done.
Thank you Sir !
Would love if one day we could use AI to be able to take photogrametry of objects that have shiney surfaces and have come out correctly. Im sure it could.
Oh it would indeed seem that it is only a matter of time @Paulbuniongonewild :-D
@@BracerJack maybe with reflections it could figure out where the light is coming from and what color it is and how bright it is and making a virtual one.
I have used one of those expensive 3d scanners from artec, they aren't much better than the one he showed
What about Einscans range of scanners bro, bet they hold up to the test compared to all these low budget ones
also you cant pickup any internal detail of an item just an outer shell with photogrammetry
Those are out of my price range to test :D
You should always use invert colors for the background.
That would be ideal yes.
Using a 360 Kinect would that be a form of photogrammetry or something more like the ciclop? If you think it is more like the DIY ciclop method what do you think is best?
Using the Kinect will be like using a 3D scanner, because it's a two camera system :D
Which one is better ? Because I don't have both to test, I cannot give you an answer and I am not about to pretend to know :D
informative & fun to watch, thanks
Thank you.
I see that you are also a listener of Manly P. Hall, we have that in common :D
Nicely Explained bro. Very informative and entertaining too.
Thanks Bro, I checked out your work and left you a comment about possible future collaborations, please reply to me there :D
Love your passion, great video.
Thank you !
So basically: photos give you better texturing, 3d scanning gives you better surfacing.
Nice Analysis.
Would projecting a pattern onto the object help when photogramming the object?
Yes, make sure that the pattern is sharp, make sure that no point in time do your presence interfere with the pattern cast on the object.
great video man
You are great too for taking the time to write this comment, it makes me smile.
Hi Jack your video was very well done. Thanks for that. I have spent the last two weeks trying to find a app that will take photos from my iPhone 6s to create a 3D scan. That I can export into a 3D editing program to carve using my CNC machine. So fare I have not found any app that works with my iPhone 6. Best of luck to you. Lee Noring
I used an app called 'Qlone' with reasonable success.
Great video! Thanks for sharing.

This is the best thread in here and no activity??
If you need something more accuracy there is "Scan in a Box"
Hi Bracer, I'm doing some 3D scanning and photogrammetry myself, but was wondering if you can help me solve a problem. When 3D scanning a dark surface I believe these dark surfaces absorb the infrared light so, in the end, the sensor can't detect it, leaving holes in the mesh. I think this is the biggest downfall to 3D scanning, but was wondering if you have a solution?
To give you an idea I'm making a head scanner and sensor always has trouble scanning black and dark hair, I'm also using Realsense SR300 with ReconstructMe, all other details come out fine though, just a big hole in people's head if they have dark hair. Cheers, Phil.
Hello Phil,
You have a number or challengers there !
1: You have to MAKE SURE every hair strand stays EXACTLY the way they are and in the SAME position while using your 3D scanner or photogrammetry, so you need either those expensive multi-camera setup or an X-men with the ability to stop time.
Short man hair will be ok.
2: Your assessment of the dark surface absorbing the infra light is valid, black absorb all lights, that's why it's black, but the situation would be worst if the 3D scanner software tries to use the part of the camera that picks up color as a guide.
When I am scanner an all black surface, I always turn off ALL lights, ZERO light source and use PURELY the infra information to derive geometry data, the result is amazingly good but you will have no color data.
Since you are scanning human, you would want color information, so you can buy one of those temporary hair color wax to color your subject's hair and ask them to wash it off after the scan, again not applicable for long hair.
love this guy
Then I love you too ;p
Looks like somebody is Finally saying the same thing that I am, 3d scanners are just Hype even 3 years later.....
Ha ha ha :D
And thank you for that funny video at the firehouse :D
Can you try the photogrammetry on a shiney object with a circular polarizer on? It might be enough to cut the shiney down and give better detail.
Cutting down the Shine is ALWAYS a good thing, but always remember that the "shine" a.k.a specular, is not part of the geometry, so no shine is the best ;p
By the way, I checked out your video and saw that you are from Australia ? I am visiting the place in September !
True, I'm looking at trying it with my dslr. Would the software handle doing the polarizer set to vertical for 1 rotation of the table, then set it horizontal and do another rotation, you would get alternating shine I guess.
Good that it is september, it gets damn hot after that. You will beat the wet season too probably, that is more jan-may.
I am just happy to be there, I have always wanted to be in Australia.
Doesn't really help as it turns out. But careful lighting and good camera technique can deal with shiny objects, this is gold and there are parts that are featureless. skfb.ly/6rMAn
Great video (Y) (Y) Two thumbs up for this. :)
An informative video that kept my attention! Great personality in the video, and nicely narrated. "Photogrammetry reigns supreme" is my favorite quote. Sounds like the conclusion of a video game ;)
Thank you very much Lauren, I see that you are into 3D printing yourself ! :D
Hi guys! I have a Sense 3D scanner, and i want to make better resolution with! Can i pimp it up, with another software or another camera like the Nikon in this video!? Thanks in advance! Zsolt from Hungary
what if you use a green screen behind of the toy to do photogrammetry.
it seems that photogrammetry fails because of not distinguishing colour
Yes, but then the background has better be even in color. As though it doesn't exist.
SOME GIRLS GOT PREGNANT BY HIS VOICE!
Ha ha ha
Interesting...
Photogrammetry is interesting, but I've always thought that it relies too much on virtual data. 3d scanners, for all their problems, are looking at an actual physical point in space. I think they're going to get better as time goes on and people familiarize themselves with the proper detectors.
That said, you mentioned something that piqued my interest. You could limit the light source in the photos used in the photogrammetry process, and then go through and take multiple rounds of pictures to build up the model.
You could then use the red light model and check it against the green light model to further remove flaws and maybe pick up details you wouldn't catch in a multi-spectral setting.
3D scanners, good ones, are still ridiculously expensive nowadays, and photogrammetry is getting really really good, so good to be honest by now.
Thank you for your good post
