You do realize that blender probably won't show all the effects and texture filters applied in-game right? like... a model will look one way in blender but a completely different way in-game (except sadx model). one example. lost world sonic isn't all that shiny in-game because of all the shaders that are used. As a rare Sonic 06 fan im pretty sure all of the super models relied heavily on the lighting and shading used, so in game it looks pretty good even if you only mainly see the back of the heads but without the lighting tricks it looks silly on its own
Hey! here's some lore. While Gerald Robotnik was creating Shadow he made him based on the scriptures of the ruines we see on Sonic 3 & Knuckles, that forshadow the last battle of the game with Super Sonic(or was it Hyper Sonic? i don't remember well). Gerald made Shadow with the image of Super Sonic , hence why he has the quills similar to Sonic when he is Super Sonic, it's like his natural state. That's why when he transform in Super Shadow his quills don't get up, he's already like that but boosted by the Chaos Emeralds's power. This could be seen in the final battle of Sonic Adventure 2, both Sonic and Shadow transform but only Sonic's quills form change.
Def love things like this, seeing every little detail about how he’s designed at the time and how it translates from paper to model- I also like that Shadow was based on how Super Sonic looked at the time, and that he’s maintained that look- though I admit I’m very interested to see his quills always mirroring the current super sonic design, for consistency.
I do feel like it's kind of unfair to compare the Super Sonic models without lighting, because the point of the golden/yellow coloring is that Super Sonic GLOWS. The colors they have unlit just don't really match how they look in game at all. Still interesting though !
The Super Sonic model from Sonic Lost World at 8:35 is not meant to look that shiny. The metallic value of the 3D model's material got messed up in some sort of way when importing it into Blender, probably because the site you got the model from had a specific value assigned to either the 3D model or the material that Blender didn't recognize, and guessed it was meant to be a metallic value.
Just a point of note (tho someone else might’ve already said this), the model difference from vanilla SA2 to Battle is… well, they all look the exact same in gameplay. However, Battle’s cutscene models (yes, each character has a different model between gameplay and cutscenes) have better hands and facial rigs (I know the hands are different, but I might be wrong on the faces)
Bruh you done the Heroes model dirty... I quite dislike how "overdone" the SA2 model is, and the Heroes model is just way more appealing to my eyes The low poly count I assume is a side effect of the multiple playable characters. They had to keep the poly count in check.
1:54 Bruh!? That was the entire point! This model came out before they finalized Shadow’s design and they wanted to show that Shadow was on another level compared to Sonic. So they designed his quills to match Super Sonic’s as a way to visually show that he was more powerful. And in SA2 people kept mistaking him for Sonic even though they don’t look the same, but once they both go super they almost look exactly like same, showing that at this point they’re both equals. I actually wish they kept Super Sonic’s quills the same as Shadow’s to keep that idea going.
1:55 in sa2 shadows spikes were made to be like supersonics even when in his base form to make him look more like the op ultimate life form but eventurely they decided that they needed to differentiate supersonic and shadow for some reason and redesigned supersonic to have every quill point up
Depending on the angle the in-game camera views Sonic, one of the mouths is rendered. It’s a trick SEGA’s been using since Unleashed to give Sonic that cartoony side mouth he has going on.
Are Super Sonic's spikes supposed to be lengthened? If so, I wouldn't mind the Adventure model as much, but it just looks too LONG. I've actually always preferred the spikes floating up, but the branching out spikes looks cool, too when done right
I much prefer the modern design that has all the quills sloped upwards, it differentiates him from shadow i think which is a good thing since shadows deaign was originally just an edited super sonic model
see while Gerald robotnik (eggmans grandfather) was creating the “ultimate life form” he discovered a mural on a wall depicting what seems to be Sonic in his Super Form and he based shadows look off of that
For some reason I can't find a refernce to it anymore, but I swear at one point I read that in SA2 (At least Battle), Super Sonic ended up reusing Super Shadows head when he actually had his own head made with a different eye curvature
ngl wish Sonic R's Angry Eyes shape was on The Fighters' version to match Sonic 3's style even more also to be more in line of Goku's initial super saiyan form vs Frieza expression not to mention Heroes Super Sonic is more Saiyan Hair-like on par with Fighters but yeah Unleashed and onward really nailed down the look
It's more correct to say Shadow looks like Super Sonic, because of lore, which means the more the super sonic spines looks like shadow's spines the better
I'm so glad they stepped away from the "Shadow Hair" Super Sonic design, it looked awful in comparison to his Sonic 2/3 design. Glad they finally decided to stick to that with all the quills pointing up!!
Honestly for sonic 06, just seeing it as is doesnt do it justice, the model looks vibrant and actually really good ingame, the whole solaris fight looks much better than most of the game anyway.

This is just a theory, they aren't that clever
This is it
This is what you do now
I guess so!
Sonic fighters had peak models all around. Even metal sonic looked dope imo
It's not surprising that Super Sonic looks good in Frontiers, considering you see him for like 50% of the game.
The metallic value of the 3D model's material got messed up in some sort of way when importing it into Blender, probably because the site you got the model from had a specific value assigned to either the 3D model or the material that Blender didn't recognize, and guessed it was meant to be a metallic value.
btw love that Sonic Advance pointer you got going on
“it looks too much like shadow” thats sorta the point
Sir, I'm gonna have to ask you to turn in your Cool license because it's due time for you to upgrade to the Awesome variant
Unleash being PEAK models
Just a point of note (tho someone else might’ve already said this), the model difference from vanilla SA2 to Battle is… well, they all look the exact same in gameplay. However, Battle’s cutscene models (yes, each character has a different model between gameplay and cutscenes) have better hands and facial rigs (I know the hands are different, but I might be wrong on the faces)
Bruh you done the Heroes model dirty... I quite dislike how "overdone" the SA2 model is, and the Heroes model is just way more appealing to my eyes
The low poly count I assume is a side effect of the multiple playable characters.
You should do Tails wonder how he changed over the years
1:55 in sa2 shadows spikes were made to be like supersonics even when in his base form to make him look more like the op ultimate life form but eventurely they decided that they needed to differentiate supersonic and shadow for some reason and redesigned supersonic to have every quill point up
SHADOW IS BASED OFF OF SUPER SONIC!!
yes
You should probably try to check the nodes to make sure you have all the proper textures setup for some of the latter models
Now this is my type of content
Oh no, Super Sonic with 2 mouths! Wait, that wasn't in Sonic Generations before!
Depending on the angle the in-game camera views Sonic, one of the mouths is rendered. It’s a trick SEGA’s been using since Unleashed to give Sonic that cartoony side mouth he has going on.
@@tc3969 oh
I like the golden BlueBerry (SA2 Model)
Are Super Sonic's spikes supposed to be lengthened? If so, I wouldn't mind the Adventure model as much, but it just looks too LONG.
I've actually always preferred the spikes floating up, but the branching out spikes looks cool, too when done right
fun fact! Sonic's Super Sonic look in Sonic Adventure 1 is supposed to be the base look of Shadow! Thats why Shadow looks like Super Sonic!
sa2 will always be my favorite no matter how much chrome he shines.
In most models' defence, as you said in the video, their respective game engines give them what they lack on the review. Good video nonetheless!
WHERE IS THE EYE TOY SUPERSTARS MODEL????? (Also the tennis game?)
This one is peak iirc 💛
I'd love to see one of these videos for the Metroid games, like all of Samus' Varia suits compared.
All shadow models next?
I absolutely adore how tiny the heads of the riders models are, they just look so dumb(literally)
Welp at least you remembered Sonic the fighters this time
I much prefer the modern design that has all the quills sloped upwards, it differentiates him from shadow i think which is a good thing since shadows deaign was originally just an edited super sonic model
see while Gerald robotnik (eggmans grandfather) was creating the “ultimate life form” he discovered a mural on a wall depicting what seems to be Sonic in his Super Form and he based shadows look off of that
Spider-Man models comparation would be nice
What about gens classic super sonic?
Those are sprites, not models. Explaining sprites wouldn’t really be relevant here.
@@aramiskelly1464
Gen stands for Generations my man.
@@blackmesa5465 gotchaaaa my bad
Unleashed Super Sonic and Frontiers Super Sonic are the best looking Super Sonics in the franchise no doubt the SA2 bias is crazy
I really like the rush model cuz his spikes look really good for sonic rush
For some reason I can't find a refernce to it anymore, but I swear at one point I read that in SA2 (At least Battle), Super Sonic ended up reusing Super Shadows head when he actually had his own head made with a different eye curvature
Bro added Shenmue but missed Smash Bros
Shadow’s quill were based off of super sonic
ngl wish Sonic R's Angry Eyes shape was on The Fighters' version to match Sonic 3's style even more also to be more in line of Goku's initial super saiyan form vs Frieza expression not to mention Heroes Super Sonic is more Saiyan Hair-like on par with Fighters but yeah Unleashed and onward really nailed down the look
It's more correct to say Shadow looks like Super Sonic, because of lore, which means the more the super sonic spines looks like shadow's spines the better
Which is how people can mistake Shadow with Sonic.
I'm so glad they stepped away from the "Shadow Hair" Super Sonic design, it looked awful in comparison to his Sonic 2/3 design. Glad they finally decided to stick to that with all the quills pointing up!!
I like it personnaly and I honnestly like both designs
Honestly for sonic 06, just seeing it as is doesnt do it justice, the model looks vibrant and actually really good ingame, the whole solaris fight looks much better than most of the game anyway.
Is the Unleashed Model the CGI one? It looks WAAAY too good, and i doubt the PS3 could handle such detailed model with everything else that happens on screen on the Gaia fight
Do Shadow next because its the year of Shadow
SA2 Super Sonic is still my favorite, it really gives me SSJ1 Namek Goku vibes with how angry he looks
I knew the sonic characters were in Shenmue but never seen that super sonic model
Do (base) Shadow model comparison next. This isn't up for a debate, it's the Year of Shadow. The perfect time to do it.
I would love to see a model side by side comparison of Rayman next pls 👍
even though its not 3d, sonic 3 and knuckles super sonic is the best character design model thats ever existed.
I'd love to see a video about the models of Leon from Resident Evil
Tails or Eggman next. If you’re looking to dip outside Sonic, I would love to see Crash Bandicoot, who has changed a lot over the years.
Original Forces has Super Sonic if you have the Free DLC
After sonic 06 it really is just the exact same model. We need a new one
Heroes to me is the best looking one, especially in game, man... i love Sonic Heroes.
You should have featured one 2d because funny joke. "0 polygons" or at least 4 idk.
