The CD650 was the 2nd player I got. I sounded good but compared to my previous player CD303 actually sounded a bit thinner. There was detail but the CD303 sounded more analogue. My later Sony CDP 222esd sounded better. All of these were blown away by the sony CDP 555esd (owned by a friend). Modern player completely outclass these early generation players.
I made same test at home with philips cd 650, pioneer pd 7300 (burr brown 2 x pcm58) and pioneer pd - 8030 (cxd 20152) and....i sold philips 650 without any soul suffering. Both pioneers has very detailed an clear, very pleasant and beautyful sound. philips i so blurry and not detailed, but huge amount of people love cd 650.
I am glad i have the conformation now because my ears also told me that the pioneer sounded better, really don't understand the hype of the philips chip, I believe chips getting better each year, just my opinion. Thanks for the input, not sure what speakers ore amp you used but the amp i used in this test isn't the best. I believe i would hear a bigger difference when I had used a better amp.
+vintage stereo i'm not a moneymaker, not rich, an ordinary analog vintage lover, i'm 41 years old and my ears ok yet;-))) So i used pioneer a - 616 mark II amp an then pioneer sx - 737 (41 years old stereo receiver - just as me))) both with grundig 3 way speakers sm - 3000 hifi box. i used three cd - r verbatim with recorded same album, cause didn't have 3 original cds of the same album same artist. So the conclusion of mine - you have read above:-)
Thank you for your movies! Keep going! As it goes for TDA1541, the only and the best CD player I've heard with this dac was Nakamichi CDP-2. It blew away everything else. The bass is comming from the abbys.
I keep looking for a TDA chipped cd player but no luck so far. I keep a list on my phone and hunt everywhere I go. They really do sound good. I bought some made in Canada -Simaudio gear. If you get a chance you should audition some! Very good gear IMO.
In fact I had a better opinion about Philips in terms of sound quality. But this comparison has radically changed my point of view. The difference in my opinion is enormous. Pioneer sounds MUCH MUCH BETTER and more natural anyway.
In my opinion Canton is the best speaker manufactorer. My other opinion is, that all cd players sound similar to each other. And now I will watch your video ...
These guys that say "YES, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE", they could not tell the difference too in blind test. But they will blame your ears, your equipment, your records, your "ignorance", just to convince you that they are the chosen ones, that only they have that ultra mega giga exceptional ears and only they can sense that extra nuances in the sound, they are extraterrestrial and have a hearing like a bat or rabbit... But, hey, Andrew, they CANNOT enjoy the MUSIC, my friend!!! :D
CD-players come in 2 sorts and 3 ranges of prices. 1) Cheap CD-players that sound crap 2) Good CD-players that sound good and are prized (a) expensive or (b) insane. So a seperate from Pioneer, Technics, Phillips, Sony... you name it will outperform the very cheap nasty cd player from a Micro stereoset. But when you move up to NAD, Cambridge Audio, Cyrus or all the other audiophile brands... You will often hear no difference with the Pioneer or the Phillips. Sometimes there is little difference, but you pay at least 5 times more in that case. And it remains a CD: cold and harsh. Better invest the money in a better speakers. Or how about a better turntable?
There is no diferance in it . I testid a cd player with a DVD player . same sound quality no diferant . they just look diferant. Its not your ears , I have ears like a dog so, It costs more money for good sound but who is complaining , you get a better HEADRUSH off it CD players to me , sound a bit chilli cold .
Sorry nut the PHILIPS CD650 was a referencedplayer and sound way better than the Japanese players. Sorry for them! own one and the CD650 sounds magnificent!! TOP OF THE BILL. eats CD, CD-R and CD-RW

I have a Magnavox with a good converter. I thought it was cool cause it's made in Belgium. Don't know if it's better either.
Very Good review, I loved listening to both CD Players.

In my opinion Canton is the best speaker manufactorer. My other opinion is, that all cd players sound similar to each other. And now I will watch your video ...
Ok, I thought it would be an A - B comparism. So, both of my opinions are still valid :) Very nice players!
