- Coors Light & Mixmag present Norman Jay MBE in The Lab LDN
More Norman Jay MBE: www.normanjaymb...
The Lab is powered by Void Acoustics: www.voidacousti...
The Lab LDN is Mixmag and Coors Light's weekly live stream, powered by Void Acoustics, where we showcase the finest DJs direct from our world famous office party.
This week we welcome Norman Jay, whose impact on UK dance music culture from soundsystems to radio is unparalleled. Jay is one of the country’s most beloved music figures, receiving an MBE for ‘deejaying and services to music’ from the Queen herself in 2002. He co-founded the legendary Good Times soundsystem and London dance music institution, as well as championing the rare groove and acid jazz scenes, the latter with Gilles Peterson via label Talkin’ Loud which he started in 1990.
Jay’s talent as a selector also extends to compilations of which he’s made 11, with the latest ‘Mister Good Times’ coming via Sunday Best Recordings on August 25. He’ll be celebrating that release with one of his famous Good Times parties at Mick’s Garage on August 27.
Wanna come Lab LDN? Email daisy@mixmag.net with the subject LAB GUESTLIST. Fridays 17:00. We'd love to see you.
Mixmag i
Mixmag hi all that sounds like a blast I take slot on the one n two's lol "life n mixing"
Yes please it would be an honour.
Where do I sign.
I guess Im randomly asking but does anybody know a way to get back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb lost the login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Pierce Nikolai instablaster =)
Saw him in little old Worcester.... he was flawless.... respect
Seriously sitting at home, on my sofa, listening to this, hand in the air when he drops another tune , man I miss the days of a happy face, a thumping bass for a loving race - would have enjoyed it more if I knew that it would stop so soon - when life was music and music was life.....much love from London xx
For the folks that don't get it, this is the definition of an old school selector. You British folk have a real treasure in Norman Jay.
@kragshot1 we know it. Well those with a pulse that is
I.e proper djing! Anyone can do what those superstar euro dj bozos do in Vegas, this is the real deal 🙂 He is a national treasure, that's why he got the MBE and not EDM.
I'm in a trance, listening to this mix! He makes it look so effortless. I think this is the first DJ set where my jaw dropped...I covered my mouth with my hands....and just shook my head. JUMP AROUND?? Are you kidding me? That was SICK!!! And then segueing into Everybody Loves the Sunshine? Nice. And is that...Evelyn Champagne King in the I'm Still Here Waiting for You mix???
This guy is a true ARTISTE!!!
Now this is what I've been searching for...I was in the clubs (all night) in NYC in the late 1980s / early 1990s - I miss this music! Get there at 11pm, leave at 6am - start at Uncle Charlie's, next to Limelight, end the night (errr...morning) at Roxy...catch the NJT train to BelMar and sleep on the beach all day Sunday...good times!
6am? I guess that at the clubs that you mentioned that would be a "late night"🚔
Timeless, always true to himself, the legend, Norman Jay. I've been a huge fan for about 25 years. I rarely go clubbing anymore but when I do I seek out somewhere that Norm is playing. His crowd is always a bunch of good uns who are there to dance and have a great time. Just the way it should be.
This crowd could do with a bit more movement. The sets in the late 80s Norman played every part of the body moved and something you never forget. Norman will always be the best and doing his thing
I've known of Norman Jay since the late 90's. from being nominated top 100 dj's in an issue of DJ magazine (UK) but this is my first real listen of his artistry. He's amazing!
This is always my "go to" whenever I want to set the party off right! Keep it bumpin' baby!
Saw him in Ibiza in 95 and still one of the best nights of my life!! 🙌👌

You can tell he is "old school". He is so chill, just movin' enough. Love it!

Zalina Happens. Happens
It's never been about the mixing with Norman but he's really skilled with selection of music and that's a rare thing these days !
Yeah...these kids don't get it. It was the same thing if you went to see David Mancuso; you went to see him for his selection skills; Mancuso didn't even mix...he just segued from track to track and you loved it!
Love Norman. Bonafide legend!
🎉 you bring it so hard 🎉 you are one of the best to do it 🎉
I love when a DJ is such a master of the turntables that he can actually dance a bit, in between mixing, because he's that skilled...that relaxed and confident of his capabilities. I don't know if I've ever heard such a perfectly mixed set! Flawless.
Best dj set ❤
True legend of the scene, nice to see the man himself still doing his thang!
Norman will always be the best. This brings back memories dancing to his fab sets at the first gala gran Blackpool weekender in Oct 1988
I’ve just gone trough this guy and i love him!!!
This music led me in other world!!!
Thank you.
Welcome to the world of soul and northern soul
Still here in 23'. Fantastic mix 👌
Thanks for the wonderful tracks mr Jay, you're an inspiration!
Thank you to the great team at Mixmag for keeping our house dancing through the COVID stuff and family troubles. This is class music with thought and inspiration, to keep a great city where we live together despite some bad situations. The Jays' sound system says it all, hopefully "Good Times" will be with us again very soon? Wish none of us were here, but that's not practical. Sounds like these keep us going and we will all dance with our families again (though sadly some may not be here with us) when this is contained and managed. Norman and his colleagues are heroes to make us think (well, at least Alison and me !).
A George Cross for every NHS worker and key workers ? Tell me i'm an idiot, these people are heroes. Malta was awarded a GC in WW2 for their actions - maybe the same.
Sorry for talking. Great music. Night from us.
Hello and sorry for this follow-up. NHS GC - enough said. Better pay and let's get this country on a better plain. Night.

Norman Jay ---- Hail Britannia! You should be required listening for all those wannabes before we release them from prison for killing House Music in the name of House Music. Long live Norman Jay!
Norman Jay, this hits me right in the feel good area of my brain stem... Great track selection! Lovely set! Keep groovin' Sir! Love from Los Angeles, California!
Mr Norman , always delivers 🙌
After reading all the comments I would like to say this...
This is the style of house music NJ plays at his club Good Times.
He also plays soul (60's,70's,80's etc),jazz,hip-hop,funk and even drum and bass !
He is not an expert in any of said genres like some who choose to specialise.
His skill lies in picking certain music from said genres that fits his vibe.
When he plays at Carnival (not anymore unfortunately) you hear all these genres mashed up
and you "get it" - it appeals to old soulboys in their 60's to young teenagers and all in between, because
they all hear a song they like and get introduced to a song they hadn't heard before that they also like and then they see the connection that Norman does.
He sees the connection as he has been into dance music since being a young skinhead in 1970 buying reggae and soul singles and has been clubbing every week since,......THAT IS ALMOST 50 YEARS OF GROOVIN. !!
That is why he is SIR Norman Jay (The Queen loves a bit of Maceo mind you, which helped).
Y'all can criticise his mixing when you've put in the same hours as him (and you've been as stylish while doing it).
Hello and thank you, Mr. Jay. Good Times Sound System is a national treasure in it's own right and please know that this has helped us as a family through difficult times over the past few years. Putting a big smile on faces (young, old and grumpy like our mob) is a bit of an art-form and you have cracked it - big time. Our pirate engineers have used this stuff to test systems on high-speed trains (that lot at St Pancras. Happy 25th anniversary to colleagues and friends) and new telecoms systems now around the UK. This is a pure form of love and your contribution to the UK and international music library/canon is a wonderful thing. Hope you all have a great weekend and keep dancing, as it's going to be a bit nippy. Night and peace from a soggy Wimbledon.
Hello and Happy New Year, from our crew. We have Sir Norman's Mixmag set banging on our system and whole place is going mad. God help our Persian rug/flying carpet ! Joey, you are right - both of you true legends deserve the gongs (you as well?). Night and peace from a soggy Wimbledon. Take care and best wishes.

Guys, after hearing the Roy Ayers remix of Everybody Loves The Sunshine in here at 50mins approx.. its been 2 years I’ve been soul searching for this track! Such a remix!! Please help.. Jay did respond to me on Twitter saying it was just a random untitled cut on his USB that day that he put on.. I need closure lol
I would have thought this would be the best version to tinker around with. Increase the tempo by 15-18%? and add the missing bits. Done. ua-cam.com/video/AMekJNrtdJE/v-deo.html
