The headline made it sound like she went into a psychotic break WHILE filming and no one helped. Watched the interview and it turns out she had it after she finished shooting. You can hardly accuse your employers and colleagues of lack of support that way because they don't know what's going on in your life.

I guess it’s more about how we all know sudden public recognition and being public facing from being on these shows/working on these networks are inherently difficult experiences to navigate.
Maybe she wants like…therapists on set and wellness checks for actors after experiencing all this high surveillance in their lives. The fat cats on top benefit the most from these shows and get to keep a level of anonymity, meanwhile these actors are at the front of the march being abused or being harassed by viewers.
Some are more strong and stoic about it, but many are high functioning and more sensitive and likely to receive lasting harm.
This is an adult woman struggling with the exposure, now look over at these Netflix child stars getting churned out. Their lives are changed overnight and I’m sure their family has cushion and aid for them, but many kids need their workplace (the fact they’re working is already such an issues) needs to feel like a safe support system.
I think this is not just reserved to entertainment. Every industry should value their workforce and support them. But we are all so cold hearted and just replace those that struggle.

And secondly its expecting too much from your former boss you know? Like normally after you are finished with a job you are done with the company thus they aren’t gonna reach out to you unless you were like dieheart bestfriends with your pervious boss🤷‍♀️ I think this actress is just suffering from paranoia cuz one of the common symptoms for psychotic breakdowns is paranoia since they tend to overthink on what others are thinking🤷‍♀️ in her case, she is overthinking her relationship with Netflix and the director of the Bridgeton 🤷‍♀️ or it could just be another stunt to make the show relevant again, cuz it has been 2 years since a season has come out so it wouldn’t hurt to have a controversy like this

Most actors have agents. They are essentially independent contractors. They aren’t employees of these companies. Ruby as an adult woman, if you are feeling challenged mentally, it’s your responsibility to talk to someone you trust. Did you discuss this matter with Netflix, Shondaland or a Therapist? I’m sure filming in a big production like Bridgerton came with stress but it is not your employers job to keep tabs on your mental health. Again, that is your responsibility. Understand the signs in your mind and body when you are not doing well and reach out to your support system. Another thing to consider - publicly blaming your mental health on two of the biggest entertainment industry leaders may impact your acting career. Consider clarifying that statement. You deserve support and I hope you are seeking it.

Shondaland is a company, Netflix is a company - they don't owe you anything other than fair pay and a reasonably safe work environment. The expectation that your employer needs to reach out proactively and offer support is ridiculous, and the role frankly wasn't challenging enough that they should (it's not like she was Joaquin Phoenix playing the Joker).
If she can't handle playing a side character or the ramifications of being the 1% of actors that becomes rich and successful, why is she in this profession?

While I believe employers overall should care about their employees’ wellbeing, I’m not understanding how playing the character she played led to a psychotic break. That seems extreme to me, based on the fact that she was a secondary character, meaning she didn’t have a lot of scenes, and though her storyline was sad, it was hardly the most challenging role anyone has ever played.
I am all for protecting your mental health, and I’m not trying to downplay her struggles. If Netflix knew she’d had the break, then they shouldn’t have expected her to do promo. And also, if she’s having psychotic breaks after playing just that character, she should probably reconsider her profession. There are way darker and more complex characters that require far more mental energy, focus, and protection than Marina Thompson of Bridgerton.

@@marias.wainwright3481yeah. I actually disagree with the other people saying that it’s not a company’s responsibility to support their worker’s mental health. Especially if the particular work load or hours are the reason said person’s mental health is suffering in the first place.
It’s not just in the context of actors and the film industry, but in general. If a particular employee is more vulnerable or they have a particular workload that’s different from their peers, I should think the company has the obligation to make sure everyone is healthy after the end result.
I can think of an anecdote of people just working customer service, for example. If the coworkers are full timers and neglect their hours and play about in the back of the store meanwhile the part timers are taken advantage of or given more emotional Labour from bad customers, then it’s going to result in the part timer breaking down. If they purposely don’t hire more part timers so they’re understaffed and there’s only one person on the floor then it’s abusing the part timer. As long as money is made at their expense, companies don’t care.
While this anecdote doesn’t conflate entirely here, this woman had an entirely different experience on and off set vs her peers. Different prep, a bleaker character and becoming known to the public is pretty traumatizing and no one can really prepare for that overnight.
She was not supported in that difficult position.

Sadly, her psychological issues were present before she started filming. She should have been more honest with herself if she wasn’t able to handle the spotlight and workload in tandem with her personal life and traumas. Her mental health is her sole responsibility. Hopefully in the future she will be more aware of her needs. Turning down the role would have been the best decision however it is not the producer’s responsibility to ensure her mental health AFTER filming has wrapped. Unfortunately this may lead to her being labeled as “difficult to work with” in Hollywood.

You can not blame a show for something you were already struggling with, no one else from the cast has said anything bad about the company and if Ruby had a psychotic breakdown then that's a red flag to me that she's probably prone to neuroticism and paranoia and believing things about people or sitations that are not real. I know this because a family member was diagnosed with psychotic depression and sent to a psychiatric ward for 6 months. This relative thought people were out to get her, that people were gossiping about her and plotting things when that wasn't a reality. If Ruby claims it was a tormenting place to be, then leave. Your boss or the company can only support you so far when they have other people to also care for and carry on with the project, they are not there to parent your unstable emotions that could be causing disruption and distress to others.
To be honest, I felt her character in the show was the most annoying and vapid, not because I think she isn't a good actress, but it felt like Ruby didn't really want to be there which made her character feel sulky, sour and petulant. She wasn't really playing Marina, she was just playing herself. As an adult, it is entitled and selfish to expect an entire company to pander to you. She knew what she was struggling with before the show, so it was her (and her loved ones) responsibility to get help in preparation and also work WITH the company to communicate everything with clarity. After watching this, she just seems like a difficult person to work with.

Seems like she should choose another profession, actress might be too stressful for her.
She was not hired for reality about her life, she was hired for an acting gig. Should every production company be expected to reach out to every single actor, extra, production crew etc. after a big production and ask if they are ok? If you need help, reach out and I'm sure they provide it.

I'm sorry to hear you struggled with being treated similarly to the role you played at such a young age. It's great to hear you didn't hesitate to get yourself assistance. Good for you. You may often find a lack of support versus what your ideal support would look like. This is the challenging part of adulting. Taking time to understand who you are, what you are experiencing and what you think. You then want to accept accountability for any part you may have played (choices made/not made). Ask your team (agent, manager, family) for the support you need. Continue to work to move forward. Life is worth it. Learning the difference between what is work and what is your real life is a life lesson many of us have to learn.
No one wants to carry the news that you are suffering in playing your role. Everyone wants to be liked and invited to keep participating in Netflix and Shondaland projects. Hard lesson but true nonetheless. You are OK. Grow your tribe. Be positive regarding your work so you have future work. Choose projects that bring joy.

I did report it to HR and they were reluctant to do anything because of hiring freeze (covid time). I had a binding contract and quit when part of the binding clause was up. The HR person though was very nice and supported me in any way he could. It made me feel slightly better. But after I left the company I never asked them to care. I only asked when I was still working for them. You are, at the end of the day, responsible for your own wellbeing. Unless their a very close friend, it makes perfect sense them giving her space and not intruding. Shondaland, netflix, cast and crew had they publically posted about showing support it would be inappropriate. Why would you want anyone youve worked with, even are friends with or family members to talk about something deeply personal and traumatic on a public platform?! She had to be doing PR events with the cast and crew. She might have been experiencing paranoia at the time, and so it's understandable she experienced reality differently, but this is really unfair to the crew because interviews like this can seriously hurt their careers.

I think that it’s more about feeling supported. When the Emily in Paris actress (Ashley) got seriously ill and hospitalized there was an outpour of support both publicly and in a personal spheres by the cast and by Netflix, because it was a sudden physical illness and with mental illness people don’t get that same support. I think there’s something to be said for this. She was still under contract to do all the promotional appearances and interviews and they were going to bring her back for the second season. Human to human you don’t ignore a serious hospitalization of a cast member like that, you at least ask them how they’re doing and see if there’s some kind of support you can offer, normally a network has a psychologist on hand for the well-being of their staff and that would include cast and they would usually be available before, during and a bit after shooting and there would always be some kind of communication with the network during promo time & between seasons as well.
So it is a bit strange that when someone falls ill during promo time, which is still work for the show, nobody asks them how they’re doing and whether they need any support. I feel like it’s the taboo of it being mental illness instead of physical illness.
This is just my 2 cents of course.
