I work for an audio video company and just recently acquired a CA, 2010 from a homeowner that didn’t want it. It came with a separate tuner.. I hooked it up to a set of speakers, and could barely hear sound coming out of it, but if I hooked up a separate amplifier up to the preamp out on the back, I could hear music
I own an earlier rebuilt Yam. CA-1000, and want to concur with your important point about the solder joint issues on all these units. Anyhow, In class A/B my CA-1000 is just an OK amplifier, In class A it's an elite amplifier of the highest order, and will be with me forever. Great video, and I'll be checking in regularly for any new post's.
Ever since my Plinius 8150 spat the dummy I’ve been on the lookout, from what I’m reading about some of these old Yamaha amps I’d be intrigued to give one a listen.
You my friend are a Vintage Tech Guru! My first decent amp was a Yamaha CA-810. Loved it & still have it, but it needs some work unfortunately. Since then I've been through tons of vintage equipment. Buying, Selling & Trading until I ended up with "my" holy grail in my price range, a Sansui 9090DB which I recently had totally restored. If you ever get a chance, I'd love to see you test one out. Keep up the good work Amigo. I always enjoy.
Thank you so much for your kind words. The CA-810 was/is a wonderful integrated amp. I've never been fortunate enough to have a 9090DB in my collection. It's one of the best receivers from Sansui or anyone else. I do have a beat to death 8080 that I will work on in the future. I sometimes work on the beat up one's harder then the one's that are in better condition. Thank you again.
Thank you! Class A and Class A/B they are biased differently. The Class A amp is on or operating within it's linear portion all the time so the amplifier runs warmer. Class A/B part of the cycle it's off. As to this CA-2010 I really can't hear the difference between the modes.

Yamaha is producing this amp again,but man is it expensive?! Here in Europe it's about 4.500 Euros!!! Yamaha has 2 versions with the 4.500 Euro version being the most expensive of the two. Nice amp! Great find!
Awesome looking amp. I really like that era of yamaha. Would have like to see a thermometer on top to show the heat difference between class ab and class a.
Back in the day I could always pick out the Yamaha equipment in the stereo shops from a distance. Thanks for the thermometer tip, I thought showing the blisters on my hand would be enough, LOL. Class A really is very very warm/hot. I have several Class A amplifiers and they all run very warm. It's the nature of the beast but this one is really cooking. I did some research and everyone that has ever been around a CA-2010 has said the same thing. The bottom line is that the CA-2010 has made it 40+ years so I guess the engineering team at Yamaha knew what they were doing.....Imagine that, LOL
That's not old enough to need restoration. This CA 2010 is 44 years old. The only reason it would need a restore is if you got some of those bad chinese caps that still plague electronic gear.
@@fernarias well it's 22 years old and could use a general tune up and cleaning. I don't know too many products that can go over 2 decades and not need some maintenance

I love YAMAHA amps, I've got a rack unit in my studio. I wish you could've played some music on it. Kind of defeats the purpose of the restoration. Anyway love the restoration, informative.

Beautiful Amp, I have the opportunity to purchase one in pretty good condition but one of the VU matters is not working.. I've done some research and it seems to be a common problem not easy to fix....
Hi! Thanks for posting this. I have this the Japanese version of this amp. The power switch/knob got bent and half broken during shipping to me. I need to take the face plate off to get to the switch/knob to fix it but am not sure how. To get all the obstructive knobs off the face plate, do I just need to pull them off the shafts? I've tried but they're really tight so I'm afraid that I might break something if I pull too hard. The volume knob has the balance ring behind it. Do I also just pull them all out one by one? Please help and show me how! Thanks!
Thank you very much. I see that you have some good suggestions for RCA jack cleaning. What I use is liquid Deoxit D100, not the D5 spray. I put a drop on any RCA plug and then insert the plug into the RCA jack and exercise it a few times. For you this is probably not a good option as Deoxit D100 is expensive stuff. I just wanted to add this in case folks are in here like me who have many piece of equipment that they restore.
Have you ever considered servicing the relais, too? 40y old relais can't be in much better shape than the other switches, I reckon. They may not be exposed to dust that much, yet they are not airtight.
Were all of the capacitors replaced on this unit bad? Or is it just good measure to do so anyway? I am in the midst of restoring a Class A/B powered set of Altec speakers circa 1991, 3 amps per speaker, the amp "chips" all say toshiba on them. I have refoaming and a couple voice coils to replaceas of now. But im studying up on the Class A/B amps in the meanwhile.

I own a Yamaha CA 2010 and i just lead to my trusted hi-fi shop for a deep cleaning session after 15 years and we are a lil bit in difficult. We can not find a proper *electrolytic and bi-polar capacitors*. I found something used on ebay but it seems not right for my model. Can you give me some suggestions? Anything would be super helpful. watched cpl of your vids. have CR2040 on bench that has bad left chan. pulled all trans and zener diode and tested. but has -54 v on TP term. with that chan brd out, unit works fine( right chan) . I'm stumped . not sure how exactly to test for a leaking transistor under actual +- 60 and the +-55 volt rails. in my exp with ss gear in the music area.. usually output trans are shorted causing issue.. or open. any thoughts?
Very nice looking amp. I like that clean face on the front. I like clean looking faces. I currently have a Sansui 5900 Z which seems to be operating OK. I’ve had it for two weeks and previously I have read in some posts about temperamental power switches. Sometimes when I’m turning the receiver off, I hear a little static kind of noise. Since I’ve had the receiver, on two occasions when I pushed the power switch in to turn it on, the lights flickered slightly with a little bit of static noise, and then the music came on. Of coarse finding a power switch for that particular receiver is a nightmare. Any thoughts on my dilemma? Other than that, the receiver is operating perfectly, even the presets for the stations which is a really nice feature. By the way, I did find a switch for my Sansui 5900 Z but they are out of stock and can’t give me a timeframe if and when they will have them back in stock. I have a picture of it I wish I could send it to you so you could see it. Too bad UA-cam doesn’t have a way to be able to send pictures.
Thank you. Your Sansui is a nice receiver. I'm sorry you found a place that had the power switch but then were out of stock. Maybe wait until they get more? Many times mouser and digikey will have a power switch that will work in a vintage piece of audio equipment. The problem is it may take some research to find one that will fit your receiver or you may have to do some modifications. Anyways it will probably take some work unless you find someone on the internet that has already done your model.
I have a yamaha cr-2020 and love it. is it possible to replace the bulbs with led's and if so what type ? and how do i determine what type of resistors to use with the led's?
You can do LED'S but I tell you for me I'd stick with the original lamps. Usually better looking even if you have the hassle of changing a burned one out every few years.
Hi i like your UA-cam video's. Why don't you use music from the free-to-use you-tube music library, so you don't have to worry about copyright claims. It is nice to hear if it works and how it sounds.

G8000 has those oval compasitors and problems with protection board , I can work on them but not the best by far i been going new age lately but i miss that Sansui sound i must admit

I highly doubt that that class a mode is real class a, those heat sinks can't handle 30 watts of class a. I got a schiit aegir, that should do class a for the first 10 watts and then switches to ab up to 20 watts and it has way bigger heatsinks that get hot, not warm but HOT.

Your correct, I do wonder why they didn't have a little larger opening at the top to vent the heat more efficiently. I guess if they needed my input I would have engineered this unit back in the day, LOL. It's made it 40+ years so you have to say "works as designed"

It's nice. I use old Nikko ones because I like the sound. However they had to be repaired.
Nikko made very nice audio equipment back in the day. I have a couple Nikko pieces in my collection.

For the most the manufacturers were so conservative back in the day with their specifications. Not many people would need more power then this.

Thank you. Yes, parts like meter's are difficult to find for vintage stereo equipment. You almost have to find a donor unit that is being parted out.

Just bought one of these off Craigslist yesterday. What would be good to use on the wood case? I was thinking maybe linseed oil?
How do you clean the RCA jacks? The outside conductor is easy, but the female jack is quite small, too small for a Q-tip. Special tool?

I do change out the old 40 year old relays at some point. Some of my projects I do in phases and I'll re-visited this one.

I put it in Class A for 10 mins to low volume... it was hot! Do I need to replace the original thermal paste or besides this will still be hot?

The G-8000 is a very nice receiver. Sansui made a lot of great stereo equipment back in the day.

What would this amps dynamic output be do you figure?
I'm really not sure but this CA-2010 should be able to handle about anything you could throw at it.
