I agree! So many plot holes. I honestly think she could have left the gods out completely and made it a WW1 novel with two war correspondents (especially since things were not explained well between the gods). I missed the love story big time in this book, and there were barely any letters.
I couldn’t agree more, it would have been an incredible historical romance about two people in a war torn country!! Perhaps include the magical typewriters, but the lack of explanation about the war and romance ruined this book 😭😭

My initial reaction was “is this a rough draft?”.
Everything just seemed so half baked.
The politics/world building: How big is this world? Are we on one continent? One country? We only hear about like 3 cities in the entire series. Are no other nations willing to help? The world just seemed so small.
The magic: the magic system made little to no sense. This may sound harsh but the story could have been so much better had we either had no magic or more magic. Towards the end, the book just seemed like a Draco x Hermione fanfiction ( with hints of Persephone x hades), minus any fantastical elements.
Missed opportunities: These scenes were set up but never executed-
THEY NEVER SAY THEY LOVED EACH OTHER IN THE ENTIRE BOOK💀😭
Elinor Little had the opportunity to be such a cool character but we got nothing.
We never get a scene of Roman’s Nan meeting Iris.
Did Sarah’s dad survive?
What do Iris and Roman do now besides garden and write?
This story will always hold a special place in my heart but it would have been so much more.
It was baking in divine rivals and then underbaked in ruthless vows 🤣 I thought everything would have been explained!! And it definitely could have benefitted from a map, hard agree with so many of your points!!!!
I am torturing myself, i am at 65 % of the book, and i hate not finishing books. It's so incredibly dull.

I agree completely. The whole book just felt like an incomplete, rough outline, not a complete book. Roman’s dad and Sarah were also weird characters. They weren’t fully realized too. Just everything wasn’t done. There were no transitions or hints. Things just popped up - like okay Enva is a guard at the museum now but why? I did cry when Forest died though. I’m moving on to the Bridge Kingdom series ❤
Yes 100% agree, it felt more like an outline!! And YES why was she even guarding the museum? And how, if she’s confined to Oath and trapped there did she manage to slip away and kill the other 4 gods? In fact, when did she supposedly do this 😂😂 NOTHING was explained and the fact that some readers are giving this 5⭐️ blows my mind!! Sure reading is subjective but COME ON! 🤣 the discrepancies are so obvious!!
@@readwshelby agreed! And why would absorbing the other gods’ powers weaken hers? What? How? And where did Dacre’s powers go? Because Iris killed him.
Also why does the song only put people to sleep in the domain below & how were the other gods put to sleep if they weren’t below?
And I agree that the magic of Iris’s/Roman’s relationship was gone too. The what-happened-to-you-questions would’ve been the first things asked. And why wasn’t Iris more hurt that he forgot her? Also it seemed like Iris spent more time looking for Forest after the bombing than Roman after the invasion. And the few cute connections didn’t balance the super weird emotional disconnect between Iris and Roman which was hard to accept in this book because the author got the connection so right in the first book.
Iris specifically just sort of felt emotionally numb which is way, way different from the first book.
You know what was also weird? Many of the character descriptions were vague enough or missing; so, I don’t know what they look like. Do you know what the editors, chancellor, Roman’s family, Sarah, Iris’s family look like? Lieutenant Shane? I have a sense of what maybe 5 characters in the whole book look like.
Side note: I loved Nan and wished there was reason for her to be in the book more.
AGREED! I was so disappointed. I also hated how slow it was, and how little Marisol and Keegan were involved in this book. Like after being taken in by Marisol, she just literally never visits them except 1 time while they are chillin camping outside the city???

Thank you for this recap! I gave Divine Rivals a 3 and was kind of holding out hope that I'd love Ruthless Vows, but ended up DNFing it within the first 100 pages. Your review totally made sense and let me know what happened without having to torture myself reading it 🤣
I’ve since lowered my rating to 2⭐️, as the more I think about how poorly everything was explained the more vex I get 🤣🤣 nothing made sense!!! So disappointing

I agree so STRONGLY. I feel soo seen by you. I was so confused. In the beginning Iris didn’t seem to care at all abt Roman?! Like he CRAWLED to her and she was just like: yeah well anyway, lets just write articles at the Tribune again.

Another thing, how exactly does Oath and the world benefit from magic? So desperately that they refused to kill the gods when they had a chance.
I didn’t understand this either 🤷🏽♀️ why are the buildings magical? Why do they so desperately want to hold on to magic. I didn’t think they could wield it? MADE NO SENSE!!
Just literally finished this book about 5 seconds ago, and I have sa same exact questionssss!!! Especially what's so special about Iris and the sword and killing and just moved on about that like she did not just become a divine killer , like wutt?? For me it really started 5 and then ya it goes down hardd , its 3 for me.
Same it started off high for me then drastically declined!!!!!
They were not MC vibes. I would wanna read a book first on Alouette and their nans, then a novella on the Gods, THEN Forest.. because tbh Forest seemed more like he could have been an MC with his backstory. Divine Rivals would just be a companion book. I liked the idea of book and I liked their romance together, but there wasnt anything special about Iris and Roman. Are they special because their nans were actually the special ones and their blood runs through their veins? Its as if Rebecca Ross wrote a prequal to this book and just never published it lol like helloooo where is the part you explain about the politics and magic syatem of this realm???
Agree with all of this, so much potential here but the execution was a miss

The first time Roman sees Iris after he thought she died in a bombing. He cracks a joke about her being under the table! What the f**k!

Well, in the first book the myth explains that Dacre got Enva to go under with him because he was killing innocent humans, so that suggests that Enva does care about humanity. Which explains why he thought starting a war would have similar results. But yeah, this book was a mess and frankly it was boring
But at some point they got married? She cared about human life so much, she married someone who loved destroying it 🤣🤣 she knew a sword could stop him but didn’t think to tell anyone about it!! didn’t make sense, such a hot mess!!

I agree it's boring, especially the second one, I was hoping it would be like Violet evergarden. But it was a mess. Also, never have I read a book where the gods/ immortals are this boring.
I just finished RV and had so many negative feelings I couldn't express. You're hilarious and everything you said was so accurate. So disappointed, but you made me smile about it! ❤

The fact that Roman and Iris NEVER said I love you! Not once! In the whole book! And every time they saw each other their reactions were so underwhelming! Wtf!

Forest was barely in the book 🥲 when he was SUCH a big part of Divine Rivals, he was Iris’ entire focus, the main reason she joined the front lines. And then *poof* he disappeared 😩🤣 made no sense!!
Omg I just finished it last night and I’m as perplexed as you are. So many questions unanswered I was so confused and over all really disappointed. I think her writing is beautiful but the storytelling left something to be desired and I am no expert but this had very little romance and very little fantasy. I found myself bored and counting the pages left to read. It’s not a thick book per se but the font is tiny and it felt like it went on and on and on. One of my favorite things is when a book is long but doesn’t feel like it. This was not it! Im so sad and it put me in a bit of a slump I need a really good fantasy book to get me back into the genre!
You’re so absolutely right, it was neither romance nor fantasy, there wasn’t enough of either!! But her writing is so amazing, it’s such a shame 😞

Omg my thoughts exactly! What in gods name was this hot mess of a story? I am so disappointed AND so angry, haha. All that build up in Divine Rivals, that cliffhanger of an ending and then, it just falls flat on its face in the sequel. Even in Divine Rivals, I wondered why humans were fighting in a war between gods in a world war 1 like setting. But with the Iris Roman story being the primary plot, I could calm my heart about the business of the gods. But not in Ruthless Vows. Nothing made sense! 😂 Aaaargh.
Roman's father was bad but he was good? Enva visits Iris in her dreams, gives Roman his memories, teaches Attie the tune. Why, exactly? The wedding ring thay keeps going back and forth between Roman and Iris with no significance. The bird book has no significance. Enva's last remaining soldiers under Brigadier Keegan just sitting ducks. Val does all of Dacre's news delivery but when Dacre wants Iris, its gotta be Roman who meets her? Why does he trust Roman so? And why the hell do both Dacre and Enva want Iris? Aaaargh.

Ugh I just finished this book & had to run to some video reviews. I am so conflicted about this book. Why does the hero / heroine have to be 18 years old?! Are there no other competent adults around because why is Iris singlehandedly running the world all the sudden? And yeah, the Gods are just not working in this series. Gods are supposed to be all knowing, yet Dacre just seems like a dumb jock or something? The worldbuilding also doesn't make sense. Like we have telephones, but also only newspapers, and sometimes no electricity, but it's also based on WWI... what are we doing here? I didn’t know whether to picture this story in the 1940s, 1920s, or 1910s due to so many conflicting descriptions.
