Loosen the torx bolts around shift box. Loosen bolts that encase shifter box. Start to tighten lower bolt that connects shift selector rod as center as possible. Now, try rowing through gears while adjusting the shifters position and beginning to tighten it all down. Idea is to keep it all loose while making adjustments then one step at a time start tightening it all up. Works perfectly Everytime.
Having the same issue here many years later with my B5.5 . It does this, and then when you put it into 2nd the neutral goes back to a normal position. If I then put it into R, 1, 3, or 5, it moves around as if it's in neutral despite being right at the top and still in the selected gear. I'll replace the linkage tomorrow I guess.
just have to keep trying. took me about 30 mins but i finally got reverse again. just kept moving the positions ever so slightly untill all gears felt good. its not hard to get it to row through all the gears, but also having reverse is the tricky part.
