Oh this is a classic! Nice that you are checking out more of them. In this era, they were in their prime.

This is not a concept album. It's 11 songs of kick ass. The singers brother and lead guitar player Criss Oliva is no longer with us (RIP). Hit by a drunk driver. Don't drink and drive!

Streets: A Rock Opera, their next album was a concept album. Well worth a listen. You really can't go wrong with any of their albums. And now I think of it, most of their albums after this were pretty much concept albums.

Correct. The first side of the tape for the Gutter Ballet album were songs intended for Streets, but had to be cut for time or making a more cohesive story for the limitations of Jon Oliva's/DT Jesus'story being an album instead of a musical.
As well, Savatage from 1987 (Hall of the Mountain King) is what became Trans Siberian Orchestra

    "Is this a concept album?"
This was a concept _band_ (might still be, depending on which member you ask & when). Also depending on who you ask (and when), Savatage might be counted as a power metal band, a hard rock band, or among the forerunners of the progressive metal and/or symphonic metal sub-genres. They never really got the recognition they deserved, to this day, even though many of Savatage's songs have found their way into The Trans-Siberian Orchestra's set lists.
If I listed all the Savatage tracks worth listening to/reacting to I would literally be listing almost their entire catalog. If you pinned me down and forced me to pick just one, I could narrow it down to a pair of hauntingly beautiful ballads: "Believe" and "When The Crowds Are Gone". Yeah, I know that's still not one, but it's like asking a man to choose between his testicles.

You can tell Phantom of the Opera was a huge influence on them at some point. Gutter Ballet, Temptation Revelation and When the Crowds are Gone would not have been out of place on Streets. I wish they had alternated between concept albums and collections of songs throughout their later albums.

Hall of the mountain king is one of their best albums and the title track is epic

Gutter Ballet is great. It's not a concept album - but you would think it is, because all of their lyrics tell a story. Hall of the Mountain King is probably my favorite album through and through (though Sirens is my favorite song). But "Edge of Thorns" is the one song that so many people enjoy.

Savatage was a sort of pre-cursor to Trans Siberian Orchestra (TSO)…the two bands did a side-by-side performance of this song at Wacken one year. I wish there was better footage of the whole thing. For another banger off of this album, “When The Crowds Are Gone” would be perfect!

    • @Harv72b
      @Harv72b 2 роки тому +1

Forgive the analogy, but it was more like TSO was an accidental child borne after Savatage's condom broke. Trans-Siberian Orchestra "began" as a liner note on Savatage's _Dead Winter Dead_ album, credited as performing on "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)". When the track was released under Savatage's name it was met with widespread apathy, but when it was re-released shortly afterwards & credited to the TSO, it became the huge holiday hit which it still is (there was quite a bit of bitterness over that fact among the band). Several years, and several albums, later the members of Savatage started focusing more and more effort into TSO, resulting in the first official album & subsequent tours. At this point Savatage as a band might be officially retired or on prolonged hiatus, depending on which member you ask & when.

I'm friends with them, and i can tell you that this song, along with When The Crowds Are Gone" were originally written as a part of their first Rock Opera. So, good job, dude. You heard right. Altho used as a stand alone, it was extracted from a story/concept. I'm sure there are comments disclosing it's origins. Being written after the writer saw Phantom of the Opera.

  • @robertjackson4212

And identifying Savatage as a genre is hard. Ostensibly they're progressive metal and thrash metal. But pre 1987 they helped create death and black metal.

As a mind blowing experience, I suggest either "This is the Time" and "Starlight" from Savatage 's Dead Winter Dead album (about the Bosnian genocide in the 90s) or "Morphine Child" from their last album before becoming Trans-Siberian Orchestra full time in 2001

I'm not sure about this, but I think this song was supposed to he in their next album, which is a conceptual album, but they finally decided to release it in the album they were working at the time.

I can see When the Crowds are Gone being on there for the same reason, as both seem to foreshadow the concepts on Streets.

  • @marcmccourt843

They are considered Progressive Rock but their earlier stuff is more Thrash then Hall and Gutter turned them into Prog and then they released their 1st concept album Streets the a bunch of stuff happened and now they are TSO!

Savatage is a very unique band. Love them since I was a teenager over 30 years ago. The only artist I know that not only comes close but far exceeds is NF. Would love to hear more Savatage reactions as well as NF. A great start to NF would be, "The Search"
The comments section will definitely tell You where to go from there. Thanks man!

You should be the reactor that does for Savatage what every other reactor is doing for Nightwish! My two cents!

I think this might be considered neo-classical in its use of symphonic arrangements. It's really not a stretch to think that musicians of their caliber would develop an appreciation for classical music and composing, and there were other bands such as Aerosmith and Metallica doing similar things with material they'd released previously making it seem very appropriate to its era.
