Fun fact: I *adored* Gilmore Girls when I was in high school because I thought Rory was the main character and, like, I was the same age as her, and like, I was going through all of the same things as she was. And I'm thinking about her sliders now: for the first few seasons she was generally competent, very sympathetic, but not particularly pro-active. Then the more pro-active she got as she left Chilton, the less sympathetic she became. Like, she was making *bad* decisions. And the plot shifted away from places where she had competency. I thought she became *very* unlikable around season 4, and I just stopped watching the show right there. I'm trying to think of other examples of characters who are pro-active, unsympathetic, and not-competent, and the only other character I can think of who comes close is Geena Davis's Thelma, but I feel like even she was still about a 5 on sympathy. I wonder if that's just a combination that doesn't work.
You make a good point, and I think it’s good to remember that sometimes characters can just unlikeable. I agree that Rory, starting with late season 4 and going through most of AYITL, is pretty unlikeable
I thoroughly enjoyed this do you think its better to keep two sliders up at a time and then swap the two to keep reader engagement or are their additions sliders that are character specific?
That’s the beauty of these sliders: they can all move independently of one another. And this is just specifically with regards to character likability. You do not necessarily need to make characters likable.
Why do characters need to have likeability...it's your story (novel)...do not write for other people, write for yourself.
