Whenever Yisrael (Israel) is recited in a Hebrew prayer, passage, song, or slogan; it translates to mean "the Jewish people" - not the modern day state, which had been annexed & colonized for ~2,000 years while we, the diaspora (and the ghettoized who remained) lived. We didn't name ourselves "Jews," there is no "J" sound in Hebrew. Instead we've been defined only by our origins (starting ~6,000 years ago) and our God. Just a reminder, "Am Yisrael Chai" means "The people of Israel live" - which is an affirmation of Jewish survival worldwide despite all the persecution. "The people of the land of Israel" = Jewish people. In the Torah, this is how Jews are defined - a people originating from the ancient land of Israel, and our God is the "God of Israel" (short for "the God of the people of the land of Israel").
Whenever Yisrael (Israel) is recited in a Hebrew prayer, passage, song, or slogan; it translates to mean "the Jewish people" - not the modern day state, which had been annexed & colonized for ~2,000 years while we, the diaspora (and the ghettoized who remained) lived. We didn't name ourselves "Jews," there is no "J" sound in Hebrew. Instead we've been defined only by our origins (starting ~6,000 years ago) and our God. Hence why it's very frustrating everyone's using our prayers out of context, many intentionally so, to express feelings of nationalism. Nationalism goes against Judaism.
FYI: Modern day Israel was created as a state of Jewish people, where Jewish emigration could never again be restricted - not the "Jewish state." The dangers inherent in naming anything THE Jewish State, are obvious. It also goes against our religion to use our religion to "govern" non-Jews or to be used for purposes other than religious practice. Thus, modern-day Israel remains a state governed primarily by Western Common Law, not by so-called "Jewish Law," which doesn't exist. The Mitzvot aren't "laws," there's not a good enough word in English to define these "rules" & "instructions"; and they certainly aren't sufficient for governance of anything. They only cover our foundational ethics, beliefs, principals that can't be compromised, and the rest defines our holidays, our religious worship and practice, and rituals about daily life that primarily focus on personal hygiene & diet to historically prevent disease.
I hope more people can understand that Ancient Hebrew is a bare bones language, given it was among the first written languages on Earth. One or two words can translate into a sentence, which is literally the Ten Commandments (all but 3 commandments are only 2 Hebrew words, while the rest are only 3):
*Everytime you see "Israel" in a Jewish prayer/song/saying, it either means The Jewish People or it's referencing the concept of "a lost home"/displacement - NOT the modern state of Israel*
Ancient Israel merely defines our identity in song and prayer. "Next year in Jerusalem" is also not a literal phrase, it's about hope of reconnecting with far away loved ones in the future.
We are a people, not a nation.
