    @phillyvinilli I use either Sharpie pen or some paint similar to Rustoleum. After you've applied it, you can rub off the excess w finger or fine sandpaper.

    Thank you very much for your sharing. You used a small black tube to adjust the size of the engraving pen. Can you tell me the length of that little pipe?

    @trekranger Many engravers use hot glue indeed, it works very well and I use it sometimes too. The other method is to use GRS thermoloc 'stuff'. You heat it up to make it soft and make fixture for the piece you need. As it cools down, it hardens and holds the piece very well. I use it for many weird shaped pieces I need to engrave - knives, spoons, watches...

    @assa123assa123 I haven't noticed any harm to the finger joint. Only thing that stresses the joint would be the force you use to put/hold the graver to the metal. Vibration is absolutely no problem, the moving period is so small that you nearly can't feel it. Maybe 1/10th of a mm and the force goes to the metal, not to the hand and fingers.

    How do you compare the black arkansas stone polish to ceramic bench stone? Does it have a higher polish than ceramic?

    • @vilts
      @vilts  5 років тому

      Good question! Since I got the white ceramic I acually haven't used anything else. It gives mirror polish and is perfect for my needs.

    As long as I observe these airgravers I wonder: is it not harmful to the finger joint?
    The first finger looks like directly in contact with vibrating cutting element.
    Does anybody have a word or two on the subject? My joint is not in very good shape, I even have to click the mouse with the middle finger quite often.

    this tool work on
    w.p. s. material

    other low hardning material

    • @vilts
      @vilts  8 років тому

      What is wps material? What is low hardening metal?
      Metal must be softer than the tool, so fully hardened steel (like knife blades) is impossible to engrave. As always, "it depends", 316L stainless watch cases are OK to engrave. HSS gravers are softer than the new carbalt ones etc.

    @trekranger For thermoloc check grstools{.com}. To release from hot glue you can either put it in the deep freeze fridge for a while, so the detail will pop out easily. The second way is to use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), which weakens the glue.

    wow ! i hope this graver wasn't the carbide one . if you dip hot carbide in water you ruin it .
    It is similar to ceramic and chilled will get micro cracks and will keep losing cutting point every time you sharpen it ... if that happen you better off just get rid of it and get a new one .
    In case of carbide heat during sharpening doesn't affect hardness of the tool .. is not the case of carbon steel of to much tempering . You just let it cool slow .

    • @vilts
      @vilts  8 років тому

      +stan I don't remember what steel it was, it was quite a while ago. But even so, I never let the gravers get so hot that the dipping in water would cause any structural changes. They're always under 100C, more like "almost too hot to touch" level, before I cool them. Never had a problem with chipping and I've been through quite a few carbides.
