I worked with Ella Fitzgerald in the house band at Cæsars Palace in Las Vegas. Tommy Flannigan was her piano player. Between shows we had a 2 hour break and Tommy would stay and practice. I was a young sax player, but knew I would learn lot if I stayed every night and listened to Tommy practice. And every night he practised Giant Steps and this beautiful tune The Night We Called it a Day. Then he would work on other material. I play it to this day. He was a very kind musician. He knew I was serious was generous enough to show me what he was doing. Thank you for this Tony!
I like Flannigan a lot, what struck me is listening to him play with Wes I really hear how the solos would influence each other. Which you would have to have it down in order to do.
Hi Tony. Once I asked you about a song which I thought you played and I asked you to give me a title of it. Now I found that song and it was not you who played it but somebody else. This lovely song is called "All the way". Would be nice to listen to this song in your performance but also your version of reharmonization. Thank you. Alex
Tony, The chart that comes up for me at the second link is for Night Train 😂… Surprised no one else has mentioned it yet, (or maybe something happened with that link since this video was posted…) I got the first and third charts and have plenty to work on, just thought you would want to know about the link. Been subscribed for some time now and find your lessons very helpful. Thanks!
I've always been interested in this stuff! pure gold this lesson. This is another tune I learned with crap chords like 30 years ago. and i'm getting much better at this stuff recently. here's hoping you get to the 100k. I do hope the comments help. (PS: Not jazz but I like the Rock band Jeff Lynne's "ELO" he does a nice little trick in ballads in the intro/break/turn round. C, Cm7 -5, Fm, C. I reckon that's pretty cool!
Im sure you must have noticed but was noticing on another guys page, anything with "Barry Harris" in the title or even description had mega views! I come here and and its the same deal. But not always. I know some guys that it does not matter so thats something!

What a great story/memory. I used to listen to T. Flannigan a lot.

Hey Tony! Do you think you’d be able to do a video on Chet Baker’s rendition of “But not for me”? I’d love to hear your approach to it.
Ahmed Jamal has a good version
