- Understanding how wood wheel repairs are estimated will help in your evaluating prospective purchases of wagons or buggies. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles can involve a great deal of personal involvement, but wheels are the most likely item to have repaired by a wheelwright.

My dad was born in 1909 and lived close to a big field with a pond in it when he was a boy. He said that a caravan of gypsies came around every few months and camped in that field. Said that they let him and his brothers have a team to use and gave em a few cents to pull their wagons out in the middle of that pond to swell up their wheels. Done this while the gypsies were out working the cumminities. Back in the mid teens.

Good to know that tires/wheels are the main focus when considering value of a wagon. Truly, it is amazing how well wood will sustain the weather and use yet still have more life when they are in the hands of a true professional during the tune up process. "Better Call Dave" is my response.
I think it’s great how each project story can be explained without words just by using the hand motions.
+1. Was going to comment this seems like a great teaching style and I love it. If something is only explained, it may or may not go into memory. If a defect, condition, or feature is only pointed at, the viewer is forced to make a conclusion after which the information is owned. Dave is a master at keeping the viewers brain active and out of idle condition. There is something very heartwarming knowing this talent and knowledge is being preserved so not to be lost to future generations.

I am fascinated by the 1800's engineering of the wagon and or "buggy". I like the fact that you inform your audience on the how and why of such engineering when you repair different parts of a wagon. As another poster mentioned that the wheels are probably the most important part (condition wise) when repairing or purchase of wagons. Henry Ford's quadricycle was simply a wagon with a column and links for steering and (todays standard) a lawn mower engine to power it.
Fascinating. I don't think this will ever help me, as I don't think I'll ever buy a buggy, but you are a good teacher, and explain well.
This is amazing! I have no interest in Wagons and Horses and only the faintest interest in wood. But it is highly enjoyable to watch folks from different fields troubleshoot & fix stuff. The process is very similar and the things you look for really show up (like with metal you often end up using precision instruments to determine gaps and warpage but here it's so easy to see which makes it brilliant for communicating concepts). Thanks!

This is exceptional study in how we should approach life in general! No matter whether we're repairing vintage buggy wheels, grandma's kitchen step stool or maybe even the occasional broken spirit, a proficient fix-it fella relies on all of his senses - including eyes, ears and an extended hand to help him "see" the problem and go about facilitating repairs. Maybe that sounds a little corny, but an outstanding video nevertheless! ;)
The most important thing to look for in a buggy or wagon is an iron box full of gold. If it's not there, you may want to just enjoy Engel's Coach Shop videos. Remember, horses are also involved with wagons and buggys.

Hi l have been fallowing your workings and love to see old wood working and a craft that is just about dead and I hope that dose not die. In your working I have not seen you forge weld a tire. My grandfather said that they would build the wheel to the tire I am unclear of how this worked. I am a wood worker I build toys to furniture and construction and hope to forget the construction part but love building toys and furniture and use some tips in how to do stuff the old way. Thank you for your time to do this

Dave doesn't know for sure on the pony wheels but probably 110 to 120 years ago. The other set is only 30 orv40 years old so must have been left outside.

Dave I heard you drop those four wheels on concrete. I replayed that section three times. Sorry to say I could not tell the difference between a relatively tight verses a loose wheel. If you ask me I am assuming they were all loose. I guess that is where experience comes in.

In older videos he showed before/after comparison. A good wheel has a nice ring and somewhat bounces back.
A good tight wheel will Bounce - kinda like a hard rubber ball when you drop it on a hard surface. These just kinda when 'Thud' and little/no bounce...

If there are insect's wholes, most time the wood is to change I presume?.... Little wholes outside, big tunnels inside!

Christopher Maurer No!!! Australia is the last place on our bucket list to visit. As my wife said we are saving the best for last. We made this list up probably 30 years ago. It’s the only place we want to visit that is still on our bucket list. It’s a place we very much want to visit. If we get to make the trip it will probably be a 7 to 8 week trip.
A stop over in Hawaii for a few days to visit a couple of the islands we did not visit on our first trip to Hawaii. Then a stop in Tahiti or one of the other islands in French Polynesia. We want to stay in those cabins over the water again. Then to Australia for about a month. Then to Europe with possibly a couple nights in India. India is not a bucket list item. We think it would be a good break for a couple nights. From Europe on to Canada for a few days. Then back to New Orleans.
This trip only scratches off two bucket list items, unless we add India to the bucket list. Australia and an around the world trip. This will close a 5,000 mile cap for me from my Air Force days. And about 10,000 for my wife. She has been to Europe going east and Tahiti west. I have been east to Tehran, Iran and west to the Philippines. I have also been to Alaska and into the Arctic circle to the north. Then Mexico, Central and South America to the south. I have also been to North Africa. Most of this while in the Air Force. We have always liked traveling and my wife really knows how to find some pretty nice deals.
@@billmorris2613 When you get to Australia you should be prepared for more friendly banter like this . We love to joke around . I,m sure you and your wife will make many new friends as Australia has had no tourists since early 2020 and we are, just now, opening again on February 21st. If you come soon you should get some great deals and be appreciated for helping to revive the tourist industry that has suffered for lack of any international tourists for almost two years . I really enjoy your show and perhaps we may be able to visit your shop next summer. You spoke about the difficulties in diagnosing the problems that may be hidden within a wheel. I am always curious how much the repairs should be, to be fair to both the owner and craftsman. I know the investment in tools and shop, not counting the material, plays a part in cost. Is it fair to ask you in this forum what the approximate costs for different type of repairs? Ballpark estimates would be sufficient. Thanks.

Can you use a webbing binder strap to simulate the tightening of the shrinking metal rims, or is the tension of the shrinking rim just too much greater than a strap can deliver? It seems as though being able to predetermine how well the wheel would tighten up with a simple (simpler) shortening of the rim would be useful in diagnoses.
The pony wagon wheels remind of the set you did for a lady from...Arizona(?)...that you repaired, and she rode one of the historic cattle drive routes, I think. She had a breakdown along the way from being on paved road, if I remember correctly. I don't remember how her journey turned out? Did she ever let you know?
Dave I have a question. Spending most of my life turning wrenches I have had my fair share of broken/seized bolts to deal with. I have always heated the material around the bolt/stud to loosen it up. Is there a specific reason for heating the bolt instead of heating the rim like you showed in this video?
Note to self: Always read the fine print in your private treaties before signing them, especially where they include chattel like wagon wheels.
What about the hubs themselves? Anything to look for? Rot, cracks? How to tell different sizes inside? These are al swarven but there is still wood inside holding boxings.
Just wondering if you use boiled linseed or raw. Keep up the great work.

I am fascinated by the 1800's wagon, looking for a 1800's Blacksmith wagon, to be towed behind my chuck wagon.
Do you have a preference of wood type for various wheel parts; hubs vs spokes vs fellys
On smaller wheels usually all the wood is hickory, although on older wheels the hubs could be elm.

I've been faithfully watching you for several years now and have always wondered why you spend all your time working (masterfully) on other people's buggies and wagons. Why not seek out, buy, refurbish and sell some of your own?

@@dianeengel4155 At the rate that so many people are seeking Dave to do SKILLED REPAIRS & RESTORATION on their projects Dave may never have time to do some projects of his own.
It is really unfortunate that students can't be found to apprentice under Dave because he is an Encyclopedia of knowledge.
Some skills can not be taught from reading books but rather need hands on experience.
I personally believe very few people would have the patience to learn 1% of what Dave knows and takes the time to expertly explain.
