I’m looking at getting the same truck. 2019 Cavalry Blue, off road, long bed. I need the long bed to haul plywood, tow a 14 foot enclosed motorcycle trailer and I want to set the truck up for overlanding.
if you’re going to use the truck to off road, get the short bed. if you’re just going to drive around the city, get the long bed. and if you find it “tricky” trying to drive a long bed, don’t get a truck at all. figure it out.
@@pinseekergaming4760 I've done most of my offroading in fullsize trucks and have never run into trouble and wished I had a foot shorter bed. I think it really only matters if you're getting into some serious shit, but I don't, so it's not really an issue. Hang on to that long bed btw, they're damn near impossible to find.
Jon Lee long bed access cab auto is the best for off roading. Got my shift kit and 5.29 gears 6 inch lift and 35 mt tires. It does well in snow and mun and trails. Perfect truck its a 4cylinder and those 5.29 really wake this truck up. Along with exhaust and air intake making 10hp more just to give it a lil boostie. Maybe i will put on supercharger next. 5k bucks but i will get 200hp 200ft lbs to the wheels.
A friend of mine and I enjoy going 4 wheeling, fishing , hiking and camping. He also has a 23 TRD double cab with the long bed. I carry all of the gear and he has a new Aluminum bed topper with a tent on top. So he sleeps in the tent and I sleep in the bed of his truck. He has the sliding drawers in the bed of his trunk so my Queen size air mattress stays on top of that. We have another friend who goes with us occasionally, but his TRD has a 5’ bed so he has to sleep next to me in his sleeping bag.
I have a DCSB Automatic. If anyone is thinking of getting this truck, save yourself some time and go ACLB Manual (if you drive stick) or at least DCLB. I don't have quite as many complaints as most people with the automatic transmission, even with my 4 cylinder, I just prefer a manual but couldn't find one and was too lazy to order one. There are PLENTY of vehicles longer than the long wheel base version of this truck so don't let that deter you. Also, its a truck. Who cares what parking in the city is like. I need to haul stuff, not pick up the girls from Walmart and parallel park downtown. I'd rather have the main function of the truck be prominent. Most of the time whenever I lug things around in the back, or help a friend move furniture, I find there just isn't enough room in the 5-foot bed. Also, if you're into shells, they just look better on the long bed. So, moral here is: don't make the same mistake as me. Don't settle for a short bed. TL;DR the short bed is just too short
Because of its longer wheelbase the long bed will drive better on the road, soak up bumps better, and tow better. The short bed will be better off road.
Even a 6 foot bed is short. My 1980 SR5 Toyota Truck Long Bed had a 7 foot 2 inch bed. Took it and a center console boat to the Florida Keys many times and slept in the back with a topper on. It made for a great short term camper. Please bring back the 2 person cab and a 7 foot + pickup bed.
I agree with Mark, even the 6.1 ft version is a bit short for camping in the bed, all the first gen longbeds were 7 ft, but narrow. Add a 180 leer shell and it offsets the limo looks with the over cab hi shell.
Also, don’t forget that you can get a long bed with the access can version rather than having to go with the club cabs. With that combo, you’ll have the advantages you mentioned in the short bed, but with a more versatile bed to haul with. Since I don’t carry people, but rather gear, I’m leaning towards the access cab, long bed version of this truck.
I traded in my older double cab short bed Tacoma for a new double cab long bed Tacoma, and I was surprised at the reduced maneuverability with the longer truck. Nevertheless, I needed the additional towing and cargo capacity so I am glad I went with the long bed.
I drive a Ford F-150 and the short bed Tacoma was not really practical to haul or carry anything more than a quick trip to Home Depot. I figure with a long bed and the tail gate down, easy peazy to carry full sheets of plywood.
Double cab long bed here. Love it! Would never consider a short bed. Although I did want a standard transmission. Really bummed they only offer automatic w the DCLB.
Try hauling a whole sheet of plywood or other really long boards or anything for decent sized home repair projects..... I am Well over 60 and a grandma, but a 5 foot bed seems like a joke, to getting any real work done, (unless your just an old lady wanting to drive around town, looking pretty cool while going out to lunch!).... .....With a short bed try even moving more than a few 24 x 18 inch totes for a flea market or helping a friend move, and loading mulch in the big bags for even a regular size yard, that 2nd trip back to Home Depot is a pain!!!...or even going to the dump, save time and make 1 trip!... of course if your off road needs are the reason you like it, I cannot judge that, but,to me the short bed just Looks stubby and and out of proportion, and is just a real insult to all the other “grown up” trucks out there🤔😂! I went for short bed. The exact some one in that video actually. Couldn’t be happier. Definitely go for what works best for you. My only gripe with the short bed is that when I put the cap on it and try to sleep back there I’ll have to sleep at an angle, oh well.
I believe the long bed provides a much better on-road ride, particularly on the highway and poorly maintained city streets. The long bed has a 120" wheelbase, 12" longer than the short bed. This provides much greater dynamic stability and a smoother more settled ride on the highway. Just as the short bed has advantages off-road, the long bed is far superior on-road.
I know. I just got a 2020 manual and the only options were access cab Long box or 4 door short box. I ended up just getting the 4 door short box cause I'm mostly use it for dirt bikes and everyday stuff. I really do wish they would make the 4 door 6 foot box manual. It really makes no sense that they don't .
andrew wat That was smart, building the dog platform! I got the double cab because my dogs are swamp princesses. And once in a while I even let the family ride w me ;-)
I noticed the shortbed was real hoppy Offroad. I feel like the longer wheelbase helps keep the truck more planted and it tends to throw you around a bit less.
I have a 2008 double can shortbed. Love it but I always find myself wishing I had a little extra space in the bed. Planning to get a 2019 or 2020 long bed next year. I use my truck to haul stuff all the time though. Also I think people like the look of the shortbed better just because there are so much more of them on the road so when you see a long bed the proportions aren’t what you’re used to.
Up until 2017 you can get a long bed with a manual trans, however it’ll be the SR trim without the crew cab. I’m picking one up in less than two weeks! Super excited. It’s the last year they paired the manual trans with the 2.7.
It's not a real truck without a bed that is at least 6 ft long. If all you care about is offroading, then get a Jeep Wrangler. Trucks are more than just off-roaders. The ability to tow and haul stuff is an integral part of what makes a truck a truck.
Short bed. Looks better. Better for off-roading. If you want a work truck, get a full size from one of the big 3. The short bed is still usable for the typical tacoma owner who might haul a sheet of plywood once in a blue moon.
I purchased my 23 TRD Sports LB 3 mos ago. This LB are not easy to find.I went to 4 to 5 dealerships and im just lucky to get one and bought it right away before someone takes it.Not easy to get.😂
Long bed is better for weigh distribuition. with the short bed your load is either on the back axle or behind it which means poor handling under maximum load whereas with the long bed you can put weight between the axles which means better handling
Decider: Short Bed CAN haul a washer and dryer (both about 28", under 5') Long Bed SHOULD be able to haul a couch with the tailgate down. Which is more important to you: You Decide
I just purchase a 2019 Toyota Tacoma 4 door TRD sport 4x4 in cement gray color, long bed with a camper shell. Goshh i love the long bed. I sleep in the back of my truck camper on a road trip to california and it actually nice consider i'm 5'10 but i have full leg room to stratch.
Not a difficult decision at all. If you want to get a truck you can sleep in the back of get one that's at least as long as your height. Simple as that.
With better tires and a lift you will have a freaking blast with either one off-roading. BUT don't count out the 4-runner either. Drove a buddies for a week while I didn't have my truck and it is VERY nice and VERY capable off-road as well. His is the off-road and it was a freaking BLAST to off-road! ha
Keep in mind the long box on this at 6’ is still considered a short box on just about anything else. I feel like the SB is for someone who doesn’t actually need a truck in most cases and would be better off with a 4 runner. The LB is still small enough that even being slightly longer shouldn’t be an issue to park. If you want the SB for its off road capabilities but aren’t comfortable driving the LB you should probably stay off the trails.
i got the long bed. the most i do is rough dirt roads if i wanted a off road rig i would lift my blazer put a 5.3 in it and convert to straight front axle. got the long bed cause i want to be able to haul things.
Because the wheelbase is extended a foot on the long bed(which is why it isn't as good off-road). No button is going to shorten and lengthen the wheelbase.
@@steve8803 😂... it’s possible, but then Toyota would be risking their reliability and the trust that comes with it. Just use the bed extender or fabricate something yourself to lengthen the bed, but Toyota would have liability issues and many logistics and hurdles to cross which would diminish the returns. I potentially see that being a $2,500 + option and if you utilize it enough for it to be worth $2,500, then you probably need a longer bed. This would only benefit you if you had to crawl over rocky terrain on the way to a worksite and then transport long materials on a smooth terrain to another site and then shorten the bed/wheelbase to navigate your way back home over the somewhat rocky and unforgiving terrain. This is a silly idea. 😂
I myself is a driver who prefer automatic transmission, and I don't mind people who like to drive manual, but I do have a slight discrimination against people who love 5' short beds...I mean come on, it's bad enough that they are slowly getting rid of regular cab (single cab) long bed model, which is 8' long, but 5' beds? Seriously, at that point I'd rather drive a hatchback such as Honda Fit.
That's my next veichal and first truck. I'd go long bed hands down. First of all isn't a 6 foot bed considered standard? And second, I agree. The proportions of a short bed make the truck look weird. I'd load a truck with tools and building material, or camping gear, boards, rods, or toys any day over beating a brand new truck on some "off road run,"... as bs a custom order has to be made in cali to get the 6ft off road in the premium package... it's a sexy truck
I wanted a long bed, but ended up with a short bed due to limited availability. I thought I would miss the extra foot. But here's the practical reality: It tows 6400#. If the 5' bed won't do the job, then use a trailer. Take the couch, the washer, the drier, and the fridge in one trip, with a lower deck and a ramp for loading. The shortbed leaves you with better angles on an easier to park and maneuver truck for the 97% of the time you are not actually hauling something that won't fit in the 5' bed. If you have aesthetic reasons for your choice - or are frequently hauling heavy/large loads - then I have no idea why you are shopping for a Tacoma.
@@SC_XOLOs Double Cab? The other cabs all get a long bed by default, but at all the dealers I checked, a double cab long bed was special order with a 6 month lead time!
Okay first of all that short bed should be a bit longer but still a bit less than the long bed. Secondly if you're going to be using a truck to move things around I want the truck to be lower. I never understood why everyone wants a freaking ladder to get on the truck. Man I missed the older smaller trucks that are lower that any normal person can get in and out without a ladder. I know I'm being extreme with the ladder part you know what I mean. I wished they made the smaller trucks with the double cab. I guess Honda is the only one sort of doing that now. Lifting larger items to a high truck is no fun. Oh yeah and not everyone wants to go off roading.
I'm going to buy a new 2021 tundra sr but I need to know which bed length to get. 6.5 or 8.1 foot. The only thing large I'm ever gonna put in the back is an atv (most likely sport, not utility). Any thoughts?
Easiest way to tell a long bed from a short bed from a distance is there is no space between the fender flare and the cab in the short bed, and also the long bed wheel well is more centered on the side of the bed, you have more room in the cab with the short bed than the long bed tacoma ,both are the same length except for the bed and cab
Because we use our TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed for both work around our property and play, having a 6’ bed is a necessity. Try sleeping in a 5’ bed when camping, or hauling lumber in a 5’ bed. I heard that Toyota was going to redesign the Tacoma in 24, so I figured that we’d wait until the 26-27 year model to get the bugs worked out of the redesigned. Then I heard that Toyota was dropping the proven, reliable, durable 3.5L Naturally Aspirated (NA) V6. Historically a Turbo engine simply doesn’t last as long as a NA engine, so we decided to buy a 23. It’s about a year old and I’ve got less than 8K miles on it. Since I’m almost 60 years old I plan on driving my 23 Tacoma until I die. In 20 years it should have around 150K miles on it and I probably won’t be alive in 20 years. I’m slowly modifying it to my tastes and I think I’m making good decisions on how I want it to look and sound by the time I’m finished with it.
Really the only thing that makes it a truck is the bed. The rest of it is car.😂 If you don't need a bed, buy a car. I've never heard anyone that bought a truck and used it say they wished they'd had a shorter bed.
Short bed looks better but long bed makes it look like it's ready for work and thus more useful which I prefer. Both beds have the same 1,100 Lb. payload. The Canyon/Colorado have 1,500 Lb. payload beds in either bed. I have a Cargo business and that extra 400 Lbs. is pretty big difference ($$$) i.e., I wish Toyota would increase the capability to at least 1,500 Lbs. etc.. Good Video!
Another way of putting it is if you need a truck get the longbed. The shortbed has less room than the 4 runner with the seats down, and if you need the maneuverability or are doing a lot of tight city driving the 4 runner is much better than any tacoma. I really wish Tacoma had a longbed version of the TRD pro, as well as manual options and other options as well that are offered on the shortbed. When it comes to usability the shortbed is really not enough.
I own a 2011 Tacoma with a short bed it doesn't bother me that it's a 5 ft bed, if I need to haul building supplies or furniture I use my trailer for that Or bed extender, the truck tows with no problem with the tow package. I used to be a diehard Ford fan, owned nothing but . Since owning a Toyota Tacoma I don't miss the f150.
Mine barely fits in my current garage or in my last home. I've only got a couple inches to spare and have to back it up so I can use the backup cam to get within inches of the wall.

Short bed is the way to go but if you’ll lift your Tacoma 4” or 6” a long bed would look better
IIRC, long bed manual is available in one trim: TRD Sport with access cab.
Love my short bed
I have a dcsb. Those long beds are a frigging land yaght. Seriously long beds are U-G-L-Y !!!
First gen tundra access cab is 217.5, 218.3 in length. 3rd gen double cab long bed is 225.5
i got the long bed. the most i do is rough dirt roads if i wanted a off road rig i would lift my blazer put a 5.3 in it and convert to straight front axle. got the long bed cause i want to be able to haul things.
Could you get a Tacoma SR automatic, double cab, short bed, V6, 4x4, with alloy rims. (No need for a tech package, side step)
totally agree with you long bed look better / 50/50 cab n bed
Short bed on the TRD Sport which I have, goes perfect together.
Between the sport and offroad shortbed I do like the sport more.
Agree. But your video makes valid points for both beds. It all comes down to what uses you have for the truck. Very informative video. Thanks Mike.
If you don’t regularly haul people, the access cab is a great option. You get the long bed with the shorter wheelbase. The best of both worlds.
I agree. I think its the best looking of the three options
In stock form, I think the dcsb looks better than the dclb. With a lift, the dclb looks better.
I have long bed ! no regrets !
Why not engineer a bed that can retract from 5 to 6 feet length by pushing a button?
You can! Just put a bed extended
I like the short bed but the long bed with a lift looks good
I own a 2008 long bed Tacoma
I love it
Thanks for sharing your tips
Team double cab, long bed here!
Before Covid when lots were full and can’t make up your mind what to choice. Good old days. And better pricing.
I prefer the longed model, I had a 2013 longed model !
T 1000 exactly the one I got. Longo Toyota only had one in stock. 🙏
I have a ram 3500 Crew cab long bed and a Toyota pickup with a shortbed one is to haul/tow one is for offroad. Best of both worlds.
But you can’t freaking find a good priced Long Bed!!!!!
Stephen Champion I was looking for a short bed, but they didn’t have it
@@SC_XOLOs Double Cab? The other cabs all get a long bed by default, but at all the dealers I checked, a double cab long bed was special order with a 6 month lead time!
This is exactly what I was looking for: lengths of beds, and is there a difference in wheelbase. Thanks for doing this
Yes, all of the additional length of the longbed is added at the front of the bed which means the wheelbase is longer by an equal amount.
@@DrivenCompanion thank you!
I have a 2006 TRD Sport 4 door 4x4 long box I just wish you could get it with a manual transmissions other then that I love it.
How long is your ATV? I'd think the 8.1 foot bed would be nice for that but if your ATV is shorter than 6.5 I'd go with that. Better for offroading.
They should've just made one bed length at 5.5 feet
That would've been perfect.
Exactly!
Yes,I agree 100%
what if a 6ft person wants to sleep in the bed while camping?
@@mrastleysghost bring a friend and "spoon"! :-)
Have never needed a longer bed than 5 feet , need the tight turn radius ! Love the compact look ! Long beds look weird
Thanks for the video. Exactly the comparison I was looking for!
Try towing a heavy load with a manuel in soft sand or dirt. Towing is easier with auto and wont wear out as fast if u are towing max loads
Really the only thing that makes it a truck is the bed. The rest of it is car.😂 If you don't need a bed, buy a car. I've never heard anyone that bought a truck and used it say they wished they'd had a shorter bed.
My dad said those exact words.. He pulls a camper and everything but hated the reduced maneuverability and visibility.
Long Bed!
Short bed looks better but long bed makes it look like it's ready for work and thus more useful which I prefer. Both beds have the same 1,100 Lb. payload. The Canyon/Colorado have 1,500 Lb. payload beds in either bed. I have a Cargo business and that extra 400 Lbs. is pretty big difference ($$$) i.e., I wish Toyota would increase the capability to at least 1,500 Lbs. etc.. Good Video!
I wish they'd add a diesel too. The duramax canyon/colorado is a great option!
Really hate how I cannot get the longbed version in a standard transmission.
You can if its a pro
Thank you Toyota very cool
@@BatuSmoka808 The pro is only the 5ft bed...
Thanks Mike! Informative video.
I bought a truck to haul gear.....NOT people. If I wanted to haul people, I would have bought a minivan.
Tr Graham some people want to haul gear AND people
There have been a few times I wish mine was a long bed but it would not fit in my garage.
Thank you so much for your video.... you answer all my questions in definitely I’m gonna go with the long bed Is more expensive but It’s very long bed
Can a double cab + long bed fit in the average size garage?
Mine barely fits in my current garage or in my last home. I've only got a couple inches to spare and have to back it up so I can use the backup cam to get within inches of the wall.
Just get an bed extender if you have the short bed
Or buy an aluminum utility trailer
This is bad. I don't need a long bed but they look awesome. Wondering how the LONG-BED can affect maneuverability. Can Anyone help?
If maneuverability really comes down to ability to park in smallish lots, backing in more than solves any issues for me - long bed since 2008
The long bed looks way cooler
Do you need the backseat and a bed to haul things as well? Get the long bed. If not ................don't.
I like my 6 speed short bed.
1 trip for either. I have a 14 foot enclosed 6’5” motorcycle trailer.
Good video bro
