This girl is the the package of what a strong woman is. She always point out about handling everything when you start having not much enough.
What an extraordinary tennis player! Love the way she talks about her family background and everything. Really shows how much love and dedication they have for one another in the family. No wonder she's so well grounded. Always grateful and absolutely gracious.
munu numu She is an extraordinary human being too. She has had a real rags to riches story - she didn't speak English when she went to the States from Russia as a child, struggled to fit in, was bullied at the tennis academy, had no money and had to wear hand me downs and herself and her Dad barely could afford anything to eat. She's a real tough warrior woman. Very inspirational.
@@greenkitty82 if everything goes her way then all is fine but the truth is the opposite... a ruthless and viscous individual who would kill in a heart beat to get her own way.... Also the family history is absolutely not what you say it is... your living in fairyland. A true example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing indeed... she is a shark and would cheat to win... oh hang on.. she did!

What a great interview - so insightful and informative! Well done WSJ for having the brilliant and talented Maria on to share her story in this interview!
Fire whoever did the makeup and lighting.
Agree
She straight up looks sweaty or greasy. Her people did her dirty by not fixing this before they taped.
The problem is twofold: first of all, the lighting is too harsh, causing glare on her face. Second, the camera used has too much dynamic range and sharpness, so we could see every pore, wrinkle, discoloration, etc on her face. Techies are always unconditionally demanding better and better dynamic range, but it's actually the worst thing to happen to people's faces, because it makes it too contrasty, and every minute imperfection will be magnified beyond 20/20.
agree
😂😂, actually she looks worse
Maria speaks beautifully. One great mind with a great approach towards life.
Started liking her From 2006 to 2019. Love you always MaSha💙💞
thnks wsj for this wonderful conversation.
Gracious and Delightful ...🙏🌺👌
My idol! Such a classy athlete and human being.⭐️👏
Maria is a very intelligent girl, and a good looking (of course!). She can be successful in anything. All the best to you Masha.🌹
Justin HENIN OF BELGIUM is 7 Time GRAND SLAM CHAMPION yet she is not that Publicity hungry
She is as crooked as her fans obviously are! She found a drug that enhanced her performance but wasn't banned , that's cheating Maria!!!!!
i could listen her for hours, very intelligent woman
Didn't she get caught for doping once?
@@thabs2001 no that's a politics.
It’s a very reflective and introspective interview. Retirement was just around the corner.
The interview is honest and true and I really love it.
Such wonderful energy Maria. Your words are motivational with the power to inspire a nation, a woman with many gifts, talents and achievements The world is eager for genuine people as yourself with the strength to conquer any obstacle. As well as your natural ability in leadership is very impressive... God Bless.

She is a very intelligent woman who is well rounded. Her beauty doesn't hurt either. She is a true champion.
I always enjoy watching her interviews. She answers so intelligently, and her voice...😍😍😍
Breathtakingly beautiful and incredibly smart.
@Brainjock idiot.
Nothing breathtakingly beautiful about Maria in my opinion. She looks like she has been drinking a lot. Face very puffy.

@@standingfortruth4043 I'm sure "slame" looks like a toad...
she is family oriented... simple and has a big heart...
Very insightful interview with a journalist asking hard-hitting questions instead of the usual padded softball questions in Maria's interviews.
Maria Sharapova came on to the tennis scene before today's era of limitless social media & all kinds of firms sliding in your messages to give you free stuff or contracts. Back then, it was mostly large companies /MNCs that could bother to endorse you.
In her memoir she talked about how one night she was pulled from her dorm at IMG to play in front of some businessmen on one of the courts, sign in a contract afterwards. It was then she realised she was "earning money for her family". That's where her win at all costs attitude comes from. Winning tournaments =prize money+endorsements.
She's benefited so much by LUCK from being scouted by a top agent like Max Eisenbud who gives priceless financial advice, gets the right industry contacts (for manufacturing her candy), books interviews with media outlets at strategic times (for her book, candy etc). She's childhood friends with Estelle Laporte, who works in communications for... the WTA. Now you know why she & her ventures have had so much EXPOSURE that no other WTA star or player was able to replicate.
Of course she'd say all this is because of hard work. Yes, PARTLY. She has drive & ambition(unlike some I the WTA). But as the old adage goes, it's WHO you know, not WHAT you know.
Contacts with the right people can mak you rich, even with a high school degree
Good interview
Good sharing !
This is really inspiring
She extremely humble, how can you not like her
Not very sure why, but just love Everything about Maria even when she ain't winning on the court
Same here. Probably it's her charisma, her ability to be strong in the midst of adversities and rise up in whatever way possible. As a person, I'm more interested in chatting with her kind of person than the other tennis superstar😊... not sure why.
She have class and likeability.

Intelligent, Beautiful, accomplished, I have had the joy of following this young ladies career since around 2006 ish..She has Never, Never, let this fan down. Love and health to Maria.🌹🌹🌹♥️
Anthony Cummins she literally got banned for taking steroids
@@justtestingonce not steroids... she didn't know that the drug was banned that year. Before banning that drug, it was totally okay to take it.
Maria needs to find a spiritual path
She is too perfect 💕💘
Thank you!
Yes, I'm watching, I'm listening, but I´d rather see her going back to the top of the tennis world.
She and Serena need to get back to winning ways
MULIYE CHUULA Serena is still winning by getting to finals of tournaments. Serena is top 10 player. Maria hardly makes it off the gate. She loses on early rounds. She is now ranked 92 .Can’t compare both. I however wish them the best for the future.
me too (same for Azarenka) but seeing her last results I don't think it's very realistic :(
@@muliyechuula9098 Serena has been in 4 out of 6 of the last grand slam finals she's played and beat sharapova 6-1 6-1 1st round of the US open.. .Sharapova is struggling to get out of the first round of small tournaments. NOt sure what world you're living in.
She is much older and was never too athletic. These interviews are a kind of Swansong to prep her for the retirement. The tennis is gone and her body is gone too.
Love Maria ♥️♥️❤️
Her english is perfect 🙌🏽
Karen Arvizu she moved here when she was like- six so yeah it’s probably pretty good
She don't even look like she's Russian
Bar_ssim actually, she looks pretty much like an ordinary cute Russian woman))
@@user-gb8et9bs3c i meant the way she talks not the appearance
Bar_ssim oh, that is true. I was shocked when heard her speaking English for the first time. I was like “Masha? Or should that be Mary?” :D
By the way, she was on Russian TV a year ago, and there is a slight accent in her Russian. Not even the way words are pronounced, but overall rhythm of speech. It is noticeably different.

My idol ❤
Maria ..luv u ..lot's of things r happening ..the brand has been superpositioned ...luv for u r contribution ...
I wish Maria's personal relationships with other tennis players was much better. She kept practically every other player at arms length and it really rubbed them the wrong way. She seems like she's just a woman full of heart and it seems like a shame that the other players probably have never seen that part of her. And her drug violation didn't help things. At the same time, she was being Maria and not fake so credit to her.
I just love Maria
beautiful!!
Smart, beautiful and strong personality

Bromide ( १८५७) was the first effective antiepilepsy drug, but is now obsolete. When phenobarbitone was introduced in १९१२ it was found to control patients resistant to bromides. TH next success was the discovery in १९३८ of phenytoin ( a hydantoin) which is structurally related to the barbiturates. Since then many drugs have been discovered, but phenytoin still remains a drug of choice in the treatment of major epilepsy. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

She’s more beautiful through the times. My god! She’s gorgeous.
Hard to get to the top of any sports 😉 you gotta work hard like obsessed with it, live and breath it everyday from 5-35 years old
I know, it gets pretty boring and lame after a couple of months, just imagine years and years.
That's why she never reached her potential, she got famous and decided to pursue what she wanted.
@@mikhaillionel6352lmao. Sharapova is the true definition of success in and outside tennis. She may not win the most grand slam but she did win all of them. A complete slam. She reached no 1 and won many other titles. If she wasn’t bothered so much by her injuries, she would be a dominant force in her years. And outside tennis, she’s just the IT girl too. You and your pathetic jealousy can go inside the dustbin.
Mission obsession and dream team are quite the concepts.⚛️
Beautiful. Are you coming back to the corts? There is where we want to see you.
From discussions on sports resources:
10/10/2019
The cause of injuries is the lack of meldonium in the diet. Age is not a reason, no matter how hard they try to brush it off and soften such a shameful retirement.
If you look at the statistics of the performances of all holders of the Career helmet in the Open era, which is considered to be a successful club type, then almost all of them showed acceptable and outstanding results after 30 years - they took TBS or went far along the grid. In addition to Frau Parhe, who ran away from WADA at the age of 30. And here is one random pass in 1/4 due to the removal of the rival for 2.5 years and an unfortunate title in a modest international.
So the stories about injuries are the noodles that she hangs out to her fans and others who watch tennis a little. After all, even a simple question from journalists about whether she was able to find meldonium, she can’t answer, starting to stammer and be embarrassed in front of everyone.
Let it perform as long as possible, it will be fun :)
My idol is getting old before she gets to know me and I'm really so sad when will be my visit to her country!!
I didn’t realise Chris Evert worked for the WSJ
LoLz same thoughts...
🤣🤣🤣
It's really nice how she is not pretentious and repeatedly refers to starting with "not having a lot" - very important lesson to look back where one started from.
I don't think she answered a single question directly.
Maria is hard to warm to but she is obviously a very intelligent, driven woman. Props for that if nothing else.
You're right, she didn't. Very clever also at fooling a significant proportion of fans into thinking she's a nice person, the ones particularly convinced by a pretty face.
Is it only me or does she look like she is about to burst into tears in any minute? Love her, though :)
Very nice
The first few seconds on this interview, I thought the interviewer was Chris Evert
