In this video I reprofile, sharpen and polish the edge of a Cold Steel Trail Hawk to a mirror finish by hand using multiple grits of sandpaper. I also shorten and char the handle and make my own "fixin' wax" to protect the wood and leather sheath.
This whole process took the better part of 3 hours and was done mostly as an experiment for the video. It is not likely what I'll maintain as the working edge and not something you'd need to do to yours. A file and 220 sandpaper is honestly all you would need for a functional tool.

Quick note on using Olive Oil to protect tools/wood. Everyone always says not to use it is as it can go "rancid". If you're interested in finding out what this really means (and why I still use it) this is a great video summarizing why "going rancid" is actually a good thing: ua-cam.com/video/9OxRFiVHZy4/v-deo.html. I won't dispute there may be much better finishes/protectants out there but olive oil and beeswax are things I almost always have on hand and have worked for me for years maintaining bushcraft tools.

Thanks for that. I was wondering why not linseed/flax oil. I guess it goes rancid too?

@@PivotalMomentumInc. Thanks for watching Kath! As I understand it those eventually go rancid too (which as mentioned is actually what you want). Absolutely no issue using either of those, I just don't carry them with me in my typical bushcraft gear loadout as they are fairly limited to just protecting wood. Olive oil/beeswax have countless other uses which is why I often carry them!
