Can We Make it Run? Hobby Town Southern Pacific F-Unit

- I picked this Hobby town southern pacific black widow f-unit off Ebay a couple years ago and it stopped working a few months ago, I had no idea why so I decided to open it up and see what was happening. I also decided just to do a general servicing on the loco including cleaning and lubricating the model. I'm overall happy with the results.

Harrison great work
MERRY CHRISTMAS Harrison and have s very Happy New Year!!!! 🌲🌲🌲🌲🎁🎁🎁🎁🧑🎄✝️🥳🎇🎆👍❤️📹😃
Nice locomotive Southern Pacific in HO scale, F- unit.
Good job in the repair.
Where is you 🐱 ?
Scooby Doo is a good dog with the cats.
Scooby Dum is a nice dog.
Scrappy Doo my pup.
OoOoO Southern Pacific. Very nice F-unit. Awesome video SMT! Keep up the great work!
SMT like your videos . It really helps me when people on Facebook ask me about manufacturers . And I tell them about your channel .
I'm amazed at how quiet that older style motor and transmission gearing are. Thanks for showing before and after running. It really makes it interesting to watch.
When you hear that “Wellll, folks” of in the distance, you know it’s gonna be a good day.
Did you just assumed my gender?

@@thiccraymond9259 YES!!!!!!!
Yep well folks means you're watching smt Mainline
Your name offends me
That's a sharp locomotive
I'm collecting the parts needed to complete a 2026 Lionel engine, I'm gonna send it to you in pieces thought. I already have 2 so I figured I'd send you my donor one so you can have one too and I'm sure the good ol' folks would like to see a video of you putting it together. cheers bud, nice repair video!
That's the Southern Pacific "Black Widow" paint scheme - looks great. That being said...I would have cut the old end of that wire, stripped a new end lead, tinned it, and bent that into a hook to wrap around that screw. And WHERE can I get one of those carbon fiber pencils????
And in the end...SMT strikes again, with another fine job in rehabbing an old loco!!! Well done, sir, well done!!!
great video liked 🚄👍
Very nice restoration! I remember you getting this loco a long while back and it’s nice to see it return!
I would call those worm gears, Harrison. That locomotive sure has an interesting drive train. It's a smooth, quiet runner.
Thanks for sharing. 👍 👍 👍
They are helical cut gears. should be quieter than worm gears.
Random Model Company: Makes a F7 unit
Harrison: ILL TAKE YOUR ENTIRE STOCK
Well done
with added Hobbytown "multidrive" kits you can power more than one unit with a single motor vastly increasing the pulling power. The multidrive is simply a system that powers trucks in a second (and even a third) body via additional trucks and universals (similar to yours) but not a second motor. All underneath leaving the second (empty) body to hold electronics or sound systems.
Swamphdaddy - I think that Darth Santa Fe did that with Hobbytown Alco PAs in one of his videos.
Always liked that black widow livery
Love the collection man can't wait to afford the hobby. Keep up the good work I've learned a few things since I've started watching
Wow such a cool locomotive
I have two of these. One is a match set A&B unit Union Pacific. I worked on them earlier today. Now they are running great. Had to do major cleaning inside getting old oil and grease, cleaning things up.
Yay new SMT video! Very good looking unit and nice job restoring it!
Good video
This was a very good one. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I had an engine designed like this and was completely stomped on how to get it running. Thanks to both you and this video, now I know what to do. Thanks again 😎
@@Gma7788 I have this engine, and thanks to SMT Mainline and this wonderful video that he made for us, it runs very well now.

Joining the Chesapeake bay and western train club and there strict all on the rolling stock you bring in so I’m spending my time getting my freight cars up to shape with there kadee couplers and good detail and wheels
Nice locomotive and great restoration!! Keep it up!!:)
Definitely worm gears. Serenity now
Ahh a brand ive Never heard of and a niceBlack widow paint scheme from 1950s. The wire on screw i would think a loop terminal connector would help so the screw is attached to loop not the wire creating fatigue maybe would help keep wire good.
I like the tips about the motor which leads me to check mine one one of my locomotives because it had difficulty running. I think I have stuff on plates plus spring tension prob an issue. Good job Fixing her up
Southern pacific roll on roll on
From Chicago to the Rockies
from Portland to New Orleans all along the golden crest
Spirit that won the west!
On spikes and ties laid down in time
We’re forever stitched together
That thing is incredibly quiet! Nice save.
this made my crazy day
The limited stretch and eventual deterioration of that rubber tubing will put a bind on the trucks on the curves and more strain on the motor. Those drive trains are mechanically the best around IMO and will probably last forever with a bit of care. Your unit has the Pittman DC70 motor. A good unit. A more powerful motor, the Pittman DC90 can be found for that unit and will double the power, if not more.
Swamphdaddy - Is it a good idea to use Rubber Restorer chemical on that rubber tubing?
Can you make a video on how to wire ac switches on a DCC system

@Samuel Olesek funny seeing u here lol
@Samuel Olesek I'm in bay area
@@piedmontrf81 What's funny about being from California???? I'm in Burbank!!
I remmber when you got this a while ago
Great video. Just to confirm a few things, YES hobbytown of Boston is still alive and No they're not sold in any stores, only online or at those now defunct things called train shows.!
For those who never hear of them, they're the last of the original die cast locomotive kit manufacturers in the USA. They have been in business since 1946. They're now located in New Jersey.
The shell is probably an old Athearn, hobbytown never made an F unit shell, and never made a plastic one either except for a few promotional and limited pieces.
I want to make a video of all the times you said well folks from the first video to right now lol
SMT - As Swamphdaddy alluded to; you could use this engine to pull SP Daylight passenger cars - like the train in the movie, " Bad Day At Black Rock ". Some of the SP fans could verify if The Owl & other night trains were pulled by Black Widow diesels. The Kadee Conversion Chart in my Walther's catalog show #6 & #8 for Hobbytown diesels.
And a last comment, see Spencer Tracy in "Bad Day at Black Rock" to see those Black Widow units is action back in the day when that paint scheme was new.
Great movie, one of my favs
Do you have substitute for the pencil and if so will that work on wheels too
If this oldie warrants the time spent on it, I would make up a fuel tank from plastic. It,again, is in need of some additional red to improve its appearance. There are lots of pictures to guide ya.
FYI...for the "pick" used for cleaning the commutator gaps? Try a dental flosser - you know, the kind that has a pic at the other end? That works pretty darned well.
Will you be fixing it cosmetically?
yes
Cool
I have a question for your digarax controller can you hook up a plug and play to it? I am looking to buy one.
Hobby town had their own engines
😞I miss hobby town
A new owner is reissuing Hobbytown models. search for the new website. Also they now have up to date prices which many will not like.
why not repaint one of the F units in your extensive F unit collection into the nerf cat express' motive power!
Like I said before....if he can get me the graphics, I can make him the decals!!!
@Samuel Olesek Well, Harrison? How about it? You want decals for the "Nerf Cat Lines", or not? Email me at home if you would like - you have the email address.
SMT does have several Santa Fe " War Bonnet " F-Units; he could take one of those engines & strip the paint off of the housing.
@@Petemonster62 yep!!
@@antonbruce1241 Sounds good, if we could somehow get a picture of Nerf-Cat's face on the front of an F-unit I think we might be in business.
nice
seem to be related to Hypoid gears - design found in automotive differentials
Curious: where did you get the carbon fiber pencil from? It looks like a really good piece of kit for locomotive servicing. Oh, and if nobody mentioned it, I'm going to shamelessly shill for Micro-Mark. All the proper miniature tools you could ever want for maintaining your locomotives and rolling stock collection. But seriously, I bought several items like the "Truck Tuner", an NMRA track/wheel gauge, and a coupler height gauge. They've proved invaluable for keeping my equipment rolling and on track. I wouldn't recommend a tool site if I didn't actually use/approve of what they're offering.
I guess that's enough word salad.
Cheers!
P.S. BTW, are you doing a Christmas Train challenge this year?
You'll have to ask Dave from DBTech about the carbon fiber pencil. Dave sent it to him.👍
@@davidztog9011 I was looking up "carbon fiber pencils" and found nothing but lightweight aerodynamic writing utensils. Is it possible that the pen Harrison is using actually a GLASS fiber pen? Because I hit search paydirt on those. But I want to make sure that is in fact what it is.
@@sort187 Harrison keeps saying carbon, but Dave of DBTech said they are fiberglass. Search eBay for fiberglass scratch brush. Good Luck! 👍
On that front truck...put some electrical tape on the inside of the frame, so it doesn't short on tight radius curves. Just an opinion.
I have a challenge for you SMT
Can you hook up a freight train with the cars looping around the whole track and connecting to the other cupping
If you want to do Multiple Unit diesel you should use HobbyTown engines because if you put a bigger motor in it. It should pull anything and if you do get one take it to a train club and do a traction test it’s funny what happens
I don't remember if they make their own motors
@@sonic23233 they used Pittman motors until Pittman quite making them. Original Hobbytown or Boston then had Japanese clones made of the DC90 motor
What is that pen called ? Also what kind of oil for the gears do you you?
I love SP
When video starts I heard his saying a million times so when the vid started I said well folks and I’m today’s video…at the same time have smt
i did a rebuilt on a hobby town southern pacific gp9 with in a month it was runing like new
Thanks for telling me that you’re not from Switzerland because somebody replied to me that you were from Switzerland and I guess he’s wrong
If anyone can help, What are some of the best reliable HO Steam locomotives with smoke?
Very nice. Vintage? Ouch! Now put some horns on that thing.
Never heard of hobby town
It's Hobbytown of Boston; no Hobby Town (as in the stores) or hobby town (with a space), Usually they are referred to as Hobbytown (one word). Just means you haven't been in the hobby long. Watch the prices on eBay.
Of course you can the train doctor can fix anything
I call it production complete but that’s amazing bud! I believe that engine shell looks kinda similar to the life like ones or probably bachmanns

Looks like an Athearn shell. Single headlight... maybe someone's upgrade from rubber band drive.
Why don’t you ever run train on the swiches
Hobby town as in the stores

I think it’s time to up your entertainment value. You should start fixing these locos underwater. Or blindfolded. Or blindfolded underwater with laser sharks circling you. Just an idea.
I like that idea! I want to have sharks with frikin' lazar beams in the background of all my videos. If I can't get those I will just get some ill tempered sea bass.
@@SMTMainline 🤣Yes, ill-tempered sea bass! Will the real Dr. Evil, please stand up.
Hi
You need to get rid of the rubber tubing on drive shaft connecting the lower trucks, ditto same on motor to gear tower drive shaft. Hobbytown (one word) part #100000K which contains 2 brass drive shafts and universal couplings. Download their catalog at: hobbytownofboston.com/?page_id=53. A new owner is reissuing the old Hobbytown drives and metal bodies.
