The weight of this guitar was 7.9 LBS. Sorry it didn't get in the final cut. Im firing the editor. lol
LMAO
Thanks Phil! You are the best!
Lol. Ive got a identical harley benton if you'd like to compare the two. I live in the area too.
As always, very pleasant to watch, tons of great information, a calm and friendly voice, very relaxing. But not telling the weight of the guitar.. death sentence for sure! :D
@@Yeroc_MC also very curious about that comparison
Back in the 80's Hondo made some playable strat types
Jesus Christ. $400. I'm flabbergasted by the spec list, it just keeps getting better but the price stays the same. Even the little things like 21:1 tuners, shielding paint, mechanical switch.. also a secret black-market Epiphone jack! Lol. Just incredible features for the price. What a beast of a mod platform.
I love the bass response on your amp.
Thanks Phillip for all your work! Brightens my day when new vid is up. Always with a grate sens of humor and a honest viewe! Kyg is king
Really love the new camera angles, Phil 😁 i always find your videos super useful aswell, keep up the good work, cheers
Thanks Phil! Fret job was amazing.
Great work Phil, really appreciate the effort you put into the videos to keep us well informed 👍🏻 cheers
I really appreciate your honesty , I love your channel . Everyone else praises it and has nothing bad to say
Very cool, thanks for sharing Phil!
Best tech assessments I've encountered on UA-cam. Well done, Phil.
Phil. I just wanted to say that your knowledge and your modesty have been a blessing. I am an advanced player, but I always learn something from you and your topics, Keep doing what you're doing, and I'll keep coming back. I know my gear! ;} take care my friend!
Love the video Phil and always look forward to what you have to share. Got notification I think 16 minutes after dropping. Thanks Phil - you're my hero!
Thank you Joe
That was a great review , thanks Phil.
Your reviews are the best Phil!
Thank you so much you do great in providing us with so much. This Guitar seems like emgs maybe locking tuners a great setup and ready to play some gigs. Thanks Phil
Another great review! Perfect overview of what this guitar is all about. Thanks Phil!
Eart. Best bang for the buck out ther.
So impressed by what I’ve been seeing coming from Eart! Shame they still don’t seem to be readily available here in UK, but hopefully soon. Thanks for your insights Phil 👊
Cheap guitar quality is becoming incredibly good over the years, that a good example ! Thanks for this deep dive Phillip
I have the same guitar. I love the neck! I plan to change the pickups. Installed locking tuners and Wilkinson locking saddles. This guitar plays better than all my fenders and very close to my Tom Anderson and suhr. I’m enjoying this guitar very much.
Very Cool, Thankyou for your in depth Review/Demo. Awesome Cheers
Excellent video!
Phillip, thank you so much for your first EART review. Because of you, I got an EART Tele, thinking I would remove the neck for a project guitar. But.... it seemed like a good guitar aside from the pickups, and it became a test bed to try Kinman "noiseless" pickups. The EART (with some action work) and Kinman combination was fantastic, worthy of any gig I ever played. That led to another EART (strat), and more Kinmans. Now, I have 5 EART's with various Kinman pickups, and they are as playable and enjoyable as my core PRS's.
I totally agree with your initial impressions, I thought the same thing when I got my Explorer from them. The frets were the nicest of anything I had ever played, action was great. The problem is after about 6 months I picked the guitar up and suddenly I had dead notes all over the fretboard, quite literally 60% of the notes were suddenly dead out of nowhere. Being in the northeast it's not super uncommon for necks to move and it happens all the time with my other guitars so I checked relief and spot on. Saddles were good. I had used a fret rocker on it when I got it and everything was perfect across the board. To my surprise all of a sudden the fret rocker was tapdancing down the neck. I was like wtf happened? I had literally played it 2 days earlier and it was perfect. So I inspected further to figure out what was going on, looking at the neck from the side I could literally see daylight between the fret and the fretboard at the edges. Some on the bass side, some on the treble side, and some on both. Some of them were so high off the fretboard that I could slide 2 sheets of standard printer paper under it. I would guess that you are totally correct in how they do the hemispherical fret ends, I just happened to get one where the frets were either not properly secured when pressed in, or the neck twisted just enough to dislodge them but not enough to see just looking at it. I tried to use a fret hammer to re-seat them but to no avail, the frets would not stay down. A good fret press to do it myself is 60% of the cost of the guitar, and I'm sure it probably wouldn't be cheap to have a reputable Luthier fix it. I now have a guitar that any intermediate or pro player would deem unplayable. It's absolutely beautiful luckily, so at least it looks nice hanging on my wall. It's so frustrating, because it was genuinely incredible until this happened. I was in the process of filming and editing my first guitar review on it because I was so pleased with it. I ended up not posting it because all of what I said in the video would have no longer been accurate based on my experience. So it has hung on the wall for almost a year looking pretty. I'd be genuinely curious if others have had this happen to them as well, or if I was just unlucky lol.
I've had my Eart Explorer for exactly one year and so far the frets are fine. Some of my other Earts are older and they are fine, too. I'm hoping it remains that way, but it looks like you may have gotten one where they failed to glue in the frets. I live in Oregon and the weather is much milder here than where you live, so that may have something to do with it. I have a fret clamp, so I should be able to fix them if it happens. My Explorer is beautiful, too, and I'd hate to see anything happen to it.
very cool of you to comment this ty
What about reaching out for a new neck?
@@Miloshe71 Great question. Being outside of the return policy by 5 months, I felt it unreasonable to ask the company for the replacement. I've tossed around the idea of just posting the video with an addendum to discuss the issues and see if they reach out to amend the situation I'll know they are truly above and beyond. I did however find it interesting that they stopped selling the Explorer-1 on Amazon shortly after this happened so I couldn't even post a review on there, which would have maybe made a difference at that time. Being someone who has had generally terribly luck, I wouldn't be surprised if I just got a dud. I just want to make sure people are aware it does happen so if it happens to them they know it wasn't just them. Also felt this was a great platform to see if anyone else has faced the same problem.
Contact the manufacturer and get them to replace the guitar.
I enjoy the heck out of your videos good sir. Liked already subbed. 👍🎸
Thank you, very cool guitar and review.
The guitar looks fantastic! Those sniffers are seething.
I have the EART non-trem headless & it's great. I don't know what it is about the neck, but it's one of my favorites. These guitars are absolutely worth the money.
Thanks - great review. At 8:37 you point out that they are not shielding the inside of the pickup cavity - but that looks like a shielded cable coming from inside the pickup's metal case, so I don't think additional shielding is necessary. They have shielded the control cavity, where there is plenty of unshielded wiring.
Great video thanks Phil
Thank you.
Love the geeky stuff👍🍺
Very interesting!❤
Bought this recently. I really like it.
I have been through more guitars since getting "restarted playing" 4 years ago. Gibson Custom Shops, Fender Custom Shops and probably 30 others in between. My Eart "335" is hands down the best playing (and maybe sounding) guitar I have run across yet. It is what I pickup and feel like I can play anything on. Now on a PRS kick but this Eart 335 is staying with me. It is my always on a stand beside me guitar. Full disclosure, I also bought the Eart NK-C1 Tele. FANTASTIC quality and feel but it never grabbed me by the nuts like their 335 does. If I wasn't headlong into PRS now I would get one of these. Always love your vids! Thanks!
That 335 grabs your testicles? Talking about a bargain
Nice looking guitar. Color is cool.
I bought just bought one of those output jacks from sweet water. I can’t wait to try it out!
I am still blown away by my headless GW2 Eart and it has become my go to guitar when ever I have spare time to play. I do think that I'm going to try a Seymore Duncans Hot Rodded humbucker set in it, not becuase I don't like the pups in it right now, but only becuase I happen to have a set I found for a great price.
GREAT VIDEO!
Thanks!
Thank you Howard! That was very kind of you. Have a great week end
thanks Phil
Thank you for this video. I have an Eart guitar 335 style. In my experience, Eart is making better quality instruments than many others. The price is way too low for what you get. If only we had access to these during the 80s and 90s.
I think it's a great deal for this guitar nice video buddy 😎👍👌🎸🎸👋👋
Thanks for showing the neck specks ,so many dont
Nice work 🤟
Phil... I've quit other podcasts JUST because your content is FAR superior... you ACTUALLY talk about guitar and guitar related stuff. What a concept!? But you also seem like a cool dude, one of us!!!... one of us!!!... just wiser, lol.
It's very important for learner guitars to sound good and are fun to play.
Thanks Phil! Been subscribed for years btw :)
Thank you
Love the bite of the Pure Tone jacks too. However, I used one on a Duo Sonic and it wasn’t great mounted into the guard. The plastic did not like the tight hold. It would flex pretty bad when you’d yank the cable out.
great review
I got a notification 16 minutes after it started.
youtube isn't the most precise tool...
Damn it! I wish I hadn't seen this video. Now I want one.
Have to admit it’s pretty impressive for the cost. I really like the coil split bridge sound. A set of pickups and a set up and you’re still not to a MIM Tele and you got SS frets and other options. Still impressive!
HUGE!
Wow! I didn't understand 1/2 of what he said, but I still got a lot out of it. Thanks!
04/26/2023: I bought one in white, and I love it. The only thing that I would have liked more would be rolled edges on neck wood. Nope, the wood edge is not rolled as some people say it is. Also, the rounded "bullet shaped" fret wire ends actually hurt my first finger. The bullet shaped fret wire ends are too high (need to be angled downward like all other guitars). And, they are too bumpyish and thumpyish (are they real words?). Yup, I feel this painful bump/thump, bump/thump, bump/thump as my hand travels up/down neck. But, I can fix that with a jeweler's file myself. It will then be a great guitar matching the $1,000.00 guitars.
It’s not difficult to roll the neck yourself … Clamp the neck to your work-bench, aka coffee table and roll away with a suitable tool, I use a bone pick … take your time and don’t push too hard.
Great video!!
Dude. I wish we had "beginner" guitars this good back in the 80s. Our "beginner" guitars sucked.
Every time someone points out the faults I think back to my brother's onyx tele with humbucker/ tremelo system plus the ,80s pointy headstock. It was rubbish and cost $400 in 80's money. I've bought a $200 Strat copy new that would have blitzed anything I had late in the decade. Good time to be an old enthusiast
@@brucehayes7251 Right. My first guitar was an Arbor. My parents paid $150 for it used in 1986 and man was it hard to get along with.
Hi Phil, thanks for this great review. Always good to see & hear from a professional what is out there & can last the distance for any player. Cheers ✌️🎸
thanks for the breakdown - as i said below looking for a lefty tele good copy - would buy one of these over the rest based on that neck alone - but a few changes and like you said - worth the base that you have to work from - Stainless Frets are a bonus for that $$.
Coolest sponsor shout-out ever
I was able to purchase from Eart, 3, pre-stainless steel guitars. A Jem style, a Ibby SL style, and Custom Les Paul style. All are great guitars with minor flaws. My NKC-1 was perfect and it's my tele of choice. The foundries that makes steel parts for most guitars are in this area. Thanks for your channel.
You're welcome
thks, I want to buy one now ;) 🤘🤘
Guitar prices are weird. You can get something now for $150 that is amazing but not ten years ago when a Gibson faded special sg used was only $399. I bought my Gibson sg special faded for only $350 at guitar center in 2018 but a $300 guitar brand new was garbage at the same time. I’m glad we can get cheap guitars nowadays that are great but it really sucks that fender and Gibson really inflated the hell out of their prices since 2020
Those EART guitars look really nice. How budget guitars have come over the years is amazing.
Not one regret buying my eart. It was 180 at the time I bought it and it's still the guitar I grab the most day to day.
Great review of this guitar Phil. I have been looking at this model for a while and wanted to see a really good review of it. The weak link is the pickups. Thanks for revealing that. What would you suggest as replacement pickups for a blues-rock, jazz-rock player? This makes it more like a $550-$600 guitar. Would it be better to just go with Epiphone or perhaps Sire? There are many areas where the EART looks better in consistency and quality but at least the pickups would be OK with an Epiphone or Sire.
Another thing that improves a cheaper guitar's sound is upgrading the saddles. Most of them come with a very light saddle made of pot metal. For about 10 to 20 dollars, you can get solid brass machined saddles which add lots of sustain and reinforce the tone of the guitar.
Thanks, I just adjusted the trem bar allen, didn't even know it had one after 4 months...DOH !
I'd just like to say how much I appreciate your no nonsense approach to sound testing guitars. Some reviewers run the signal through so much software they could stretch a fishing line across a wooden broom handle and it would sound like David Gilmour's live rig. Your method is much more realistic and useful.
Mighty fine guitar - wish I could afford one.
The design of the bridge is also very impressive. Pinch points are elevated with contours to the form of the string making string break uncommon. I see no need to replace anything involving the bridge however it would hold tune with a trem routing and locking tuners.
Clever how they are doing the fret ends!
I have the same guitar and I am very happy with the quality of the construction. I bought the Dmx-10 model then bought one more. Someone needs to demo the dmx model because it is an amazing instrument.
I got a Censtar guitar that looks exactly like that with everything the same down to the tuners. I have 1 string tree but it’s a roller. Mine is also a hardtail. Other than that, frets, woods, color, pickups, switch, neck, trussrod, body carves, everything is the same. I got it for $199.
I'm very curious about the Epiphone parts. Please let us know if you find out what's going on with the Epiphone parts.
Anything I can do to help a soul brother I will always do it
Tempting for a project guitar
Great in depth review as always. I am wondering how you think these Eart guitars , this model in particular compares to the Harley Benton say the FUSION lll ? The HB Fusion lll models with the Wilkinson term are about the same $399 price or even less. Now REVERB also has them with shipping included inside U.S. .Those are made in Indonesia are these Eart guitars Chinese or Indonesian ? , I know they are not Korean! Thanks for your work…
Looks pretty legit.
I've had an EART for over a yr and I was happy with everything BUT the pickups as well...They just have a harsh ceramic tone that doesn't lend itself to dynamic playing at all.
Hi, always watch your great content. May I ask what is the lowest cost guitar maker/model that reliably comes from the factory without any troubling defects? Thanks.
Puretone in ALL of my axes! First mod I do.
My ears perked up when you mentioned the tuner ratio, 21:1. More 'budget' tuners tend to have a lower ratio. (eg12:1). It also looked to have a nylon washer between the button and gear case, another good sign of better quality. Rounding and nipping fret ends is a great process improvement! Are they listening to us in these reviews? A big YES I'm thinking!! I'm a little like Phil in that I buy/save maybe even hoard pups!! LOL Also HQ parts! This one might be good enough to refit for gigging use!! I hope the US big_3 are paying attention!! Great review Phil!! I may have a go at this model!! 8) --gary
That's a beauty. Cheers, Phil.
I have an Eart E-3S that i bought as open box but never played.
It was good out of the box, with no fret issues, but like this one it needed a setup to bring
the action down to a comfortable height.
Fingers crossed it is still good after two years in a very variable climate here in the UK.
Eart make some good guitars, but like any brand some samples are not so great.
Phillip - nice video, thanks - QUESTION = Which pickup replacement set would you recommend to upgrade a 2009 Edition Squier Affinity, the goal being to get closer to that beautiful classic Fender sound ? I find the factory pickups sound "thin" and lifeless when compared to say a Yamaha Pacifica 612 (which come factory with Seymour Duncan single coil). OR is the problem lying with the "condensor" that Squier uses and upgrading the condensor would resolve the entire sound quality problem ????? Cheers and greetings
That's a hell of a lot of guitar for the money
I want to give a big shout out to you Phil first of all you got me to wear I'm not afraid to work online guitars but the real pluses is that you're not running everything through a computer you actually taking the time to use a real amp and Mic it up. You know how it is UA-cam this days you can't trust any review yours I am fairly confident with❤
Phil great demo as alway's my freind and do they make basses ????
Dammit.. now seriously I want one of these lol
INFO- Squier 40th Anniversary Strat PRM (Metallic Red) purchased at Thomann - I was so excited and looking forward but I had to send it back !!!
(I am a 1984 Graduate GIT and seen a couple guitars over the years) Man was I looking forward to this guitar, especially after seeing some UA-cam reviews on this. Here is why I sent mine back. 1. The GOOD - visually pleasing, beautifully packed, a laquered neck (which I love) which feels fantastic, out of the box playable but with string setup too high.
2. The BAD - light but noticable scratches on neck at 1st fret by nut on both sides, (saddle) string height control screws of bridge were like razor blades and thus unplayable, the 3 piece body construction is visible through the beautiful paint (!!!), Fret buzzing and uneven frets detected with Fret Rocker at at lease 4 different places (I accustomed the guitar to the studio for 3 days), 3 very light but clearly visible "dents" of paint job next to pick guard. Last but not least, it felt and sounded "cheap", "trashy" unplugged, and below expectations plugged through amp.
I LOVED the feel of the neck, that laquer finished fender type neck felt SO good. If I could purchase that neck independantly I would - and pay a luthier for a refret.
I SO much wanted to love and keep this guitar and my expectations were able to pardon some of the shortfalls, but this was really over the top let down.
What kind of feedback have you heard or seen from the marketplace ?
So my best option is to upgrade my 2009 Squier Affinity which plays and feels a dream. Every note up and down that neck plays and rings beautiful. The Graph Tech saddles replacement corrected the bridge razor blade problems on that one. Just need a pickup or condensor upgrade ?
First off,..I love your reviews! Great job!
I just received a T-380 and agree with and love just about everything about this guitar.
However, 2 things I noticed is that the bridge plate rested on the body, and did not free float.
That was just a simple claw adjustment to make the bridge plate float parallel with the body and float smoothly.
The thing that I find inexcusable is that the neck is very flat, borderline convex, and and even after loosening the truss rod
Till it has no pressure on the neck, and put in a humidity controlled room at 50% humidity, it has not moved in a day.
I even tried the old “put downward pressure on the neck physically” and it does not move or give at all.
Needless to say, I’m going to return this one and have ordered a second one to see if there is any difference.
I’ll let you know what happens.
Q; Did you find that there was ZERO give to the neck? Do you feel it’s because it’s been “roasted” , finally does it feel like it came shipped with 10 gauge strings on it?
Any feedback would be really appreciated.
(I’m sure you have thousands of comments to read through)
Sincerely, Mike
the coil split is impressive
I notice you pointed out the Epiphone branded output jack. I have the Eart LP style guitar and noticed the tailpiece is branded Epiphone and I suspect the bridge is an Epiphone lock-tone because it is identical to, and interchangeable with one on a Epiphone.
I think that Squier Vintage modified, Gretsch electromatic, and even some Epiphone guitars under 500 are just as good as pro model instruments.
The G&L has pickup covers, euch 😅 Gimme the flush design anyday Eart should be paying you, never heard of them until your review here Philip, now I'll be getting one. Shame there's no fixed bridge string through option.
I digging the new guitar background 💯✌🤟🤘
Thank you And thank you for being a subscriber!
That headdstock is the same as Bax Music own in house guitar called the Fazley Phynica. They also have roasted neck, bone nut,Wilkinson tremelo, locking tuners all for less than 150GBP.check them out.
I don't know if you've done review of Gtrs guitars before, I'm curious to know what you think about those as well. They had Strat style and headless style guitars.
