Johnny was the one of the best trumpeters in the world. Every style, every technical passage, and a passion that exploded through the bell of his trumpet. He was the best. Thank you for posting his solos.
I got to play with him twice, he guest soloed with two different groups I was in over the years. Wonderful gracious gentleman, and indeed, a fine trumpet player. His recordings are well worth getting into your ears, fat warm and melodic sound, and serious control.
BTW you should hear his Telemann in D.. to me it is the ultimate combination of classical precision tempered by his lyric voice and relaxed approach. The adagio.. oh my goodness.. in headphones in the lazyboy.. mmmmm. I seriously recommend to any trumpet player to get online and ordering his recording The Art of Johnny Cowell, or for some it could be called "The Amazing Sound of Someone I Wish I Had Heard About Way Sooner". He is a joy to listen to.
His version of Gabriel's Oboe is my favorite by far, same patient, lyrical phrasing that never seems to be the tempered in the slightest by physicality on the horn.

A wonderful trumpet player, musician and one helluva guy, too! Many good memories of Johnny!
I'm 55 and he's a little before my time, and I stumbled upon him by accident. Never have I heard such a passionate player I love his style

He was lead trumpet with the Toronto Symphony for many years.

why this has so little views, I haven't the slightest idea.
I searched for a dramatic trumpet and I got dramatic trumpet.
Not only that, but an introduction to what I believe is an amazing artist.
