Thanks for posting this. I just had my second repair done and this helped me understand the process better. The nerve pain is uncomfortable but getting better.
Very much informative for common people. What is the maximum time required by surgeons for repair of the small inguinal hernia? Is it good to carry on the open surgical operation by application of LOCAL anesthesia? Thanks for the video.
The length of time for an open inguinal hernia repair varies by the size of the hernia but usually about 30-40 minutes. For some very small hernias, straight local could be an option, but for most, some sedation and/or general anesthesia is needed.
Was this patient given a local or general anesthesia? Laparoscopic surgery doesn't seem so minimally invasive when taking into account the general anesthesia, breathing tube, gas, and 3 incisions.
99% of patients have general anesthesia for their hernia repair. On occasion some patients with small hernias can be done with local and sedation. Best, CAHS
So I’m not sure if I have a hernia but I felt something inside next to my upper leg close to my pubic area and I can only feel it by applying pressure and it feels like a really tiny pebble any ideas doc?
hello i was told that since i had IMRT for prostate cancer chances are the prostate has too much scarring and i am therefore not a candidate for laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair and and that open repair would be advised
Radiation therapy can produce scar tissue. Open prostatectomy definitely causes scar tissue and makes laparoscopic or robotic inguinal hernia repair much more challenging.
Dear doctor, I have been binge-watching your videos, many still to go through. Thanks for that, if I was not in Europe, I would have gone with you :-) Please reply as I am lost! I am a 48-year-old very active guy with a six-pack and a strong core (15hrs of various types of fitness weekly for decades). I had Corona 6 months ago, during which I did a big cough or sneeze in my sleep and felt a sharp knife stabbing type of pain on my left abdomen side. No pain afterwards, just a 2 out of 10 level odd sensation. I though maybe a small muscle strain. Got it checked by my GP using ultrasound, he said all good, so I continued to train hard. The last 6 months, I continued to feel a semi-constant 2 out of 10 sensation on the left side, no bulge or any visible abnormality externally anywhere. No constipation or any other symptoms when coughing or anything. Yesterday, I got it checked again but this time by an ultrasound specialist, the left side has a small developing hernia, and surprisingly I have one on the right side too, large one and part of intestine poking in the hernia sac. So basically bilateral inguinal hernia but nothing visible externally. My question, for an active, lean person, would you recommend open or laparoscopy surgery? Mesh placement anterior or posterior? I have not seen a surgeon yet to discuss various options as it is all fresh, I am researching like a beaver and hungry for any advice. Thanks for your valuable time. Keep up the excellent work.
It's impossible to suggest open or lap to a patient in this forum since that's a conversation that's best had with your individual surgeon. Keep us posted, CAHS

It seems that most of the meshes not actually stitched to anything. Is that correct. I just had mine done so watching this is a bit late but I didn't want to see it before hand. My surgeon did explain what will happen but it was somewhat overwhelming. I just had my 3 week post surgery checkup. I had a repair done on the other side 3 years ago but we knew this side was brewing. I am also an athlete with very little fat.
Hi Sir,I’m from India Just 3months ago I have undergone through right side open inguinal hernia surgery with permanent mesh. Doctor now after 3months I am having pain in my right side even I am facing difficulty in walking. When I lie down to bed at that time it is okay. So doctor I am not able to understand why this is happening is the mesh got damaged, does my hernia reoccurred?
Soumadeep, It would be hard to comment on why you are having pain 3 months after your surgery. Some patients it can take months for all the swelling and sensitivity to resolve. We hope that you begin to improve soon, CAHS

Hi! Do you have an update on your situation?
What’s the deal with mesh vs no mesh? Current update in 2024?
There has not been significant changes to the use of mesh over the past years. Some basic information is on our website and other UA-cam videos.
I just have a small one please is surgery required?
Drew, Surgery is not required for most hernias, CAHS

Doctor, I am thin 25 y/o that qualifies for non-mesh. With a very small hernia. Do you recommend any docs in CA that can do non mesh?
There is a surgeon in Las Vegas who performs no mesh repairs.

Dr. Harris I truly enjoy all your content & everything I’ve read of your expertise. Truly incredible! I’m just frighten of mesh and side effects
Is your patient awake the whole time

Most surgeons fix the mesh to the surrounding tissues while repairing the hernia.
I’m 24 and have a inguinal hernia. Looking at this makes me scared 😭 it was swollen but went back down to normal Size doc what should I do?
Thank you for sharing your comments. Good luck in your upcoming surgery.
there any change it recur?
Patients have about a 1-2% recurrence rate after a primary hernia repair. Best, CAHS
How much the cost for repair hernia inguinalis dokter??
Costs for hernia surgery are discussed in more details on our website, and in a prior video.
Interesting, hernia specialists used to be called general surgeons. Don’t you perform more advanced repairs with laparoscope or robotic?
Thank you for your comments.
