Do you know why us older folks like watching ? We get to listen to our music with YOU! Not alone.
I'm born in '98. This is the music I grew up with.
Born in 66
I was born in 1949 December 9 I grew up with the DOORS 17 in 1967.❤ Strange enough, I was in Rock n Roll Circus July 3, 1971.i was on leave in US ARMY traveling Europe in Paris, France.Jim died in women's restroom of China white heroin which potentance was 90 % killed him on the sport...I'll tell you more later...
Right? I feel a little like a parent or older sibling watching them react to music I grew up with (The Doors were a bit before my time, though I came to appreciate them later after beginning to play guitar myself). Like my brother did with me, hearing his music and getting into some of it (Queen, ELO, Kansas, early Van Halen). It's fun.
66
For me, the period from '65 to '76 was the greatest period for rock music and the Doors are one of the reasons why.
Hard to argue differently. The era has aged very well, and if anything continues to grow in stature and importance.
Music IMO does not change in the new decade but is more like mid-decade to mid-decade. I am glad to see I am not the only one.
I think so to and Ritchie Blackmore said so himself.
Agreed, with one caveat: the Canadian rock band Big Wreck 1997-present day
@@SillyGoose2024 I'll have to check them out.
Jim Morrison was not just a vocalist; he was a poet. His lyrics made you think. The Doors are in my top five of greatest bands ever,
Jim was a poet but was a bit of an asshole too. Spoilt middle-class boy. He wasted his talent and died far too young
Even as a metalhead...I can't deny that. Much respect.
That may be true but he was a drunk and drug addict hell that's what killed him
Snoop Dogg did a version of this song on the Rhythm and Gangsta album so possibly you have heard it there (also part of the Need for Speed Underground 2 soundtrack)
Thank you.
I was just going to say I first heard it on need for speed when I was a kid
NFS Underground was what came to mind for me... customizing cars while jamming to that was "da bomb"
Yes, absolutely amazing
I was just about to add this, but you beat me to it. You wouldn't have expected this in a rap song, but obviously Snoop was a fan. I think he probably had a common love of substances with the band, weed in particular. Æ 🤔
"An actor out ON LOAN" Not "alone" - "ON LOAN".
"I HATE when people get the lyrics wrong!" - Kevin Costner, "Bull Durham"
Also, "Sweet Family will die", not "Sweet memory will die"
Yup...and...yup. no one even knows what "an actor out on loan" even refers to, nowadays
@@paulfrombrooklyn5409 Good lord, I didn't even make it to that part. The younger generation is dependent on lyric videos to understand the songs from years ago, and the lyrics are all wrong!
@@classiclife7204 I’m around their age and I don’t need lyric videos. He is pretty clear with what he is saying and the audio quality of these lyric videos are terrible.
@@rafterman5072 Yeah, might be how the old lyric videos avoid copyright claims - bad sound and wrong lyrics, lol
A dark little note in case no one else has mentioned it yet, but the “Killer on the road“ mentioned in the first verse of this song is actually referring to a very real person named Billy Cook who went on a spree killing and carjacked a family on vacation. He made them drive him around while he committed other crimes until he finally killed them all. That’s why they say “if you give this man a ride sweet memories will die“. Yeah it’s a bit of a dark tune.
Never knew...thank you.
same here
I forgot about this comment and I need to correct myself. The actual line is "if you give this man a ride sweet family will die'.
that is a very sad story
Great reaction as always. Lex is so adorable. One note: whoever put this video together got some of the lyrics wrong. It's "an actor out on loan" and "sweet family will die" Just fyi. And their comment during Ray Manzarek's wonderful keyboard interlude about it being too long is just silly. It's perfect. Lot's more awesome Doors songs for you guys to check out. Thanks for doing this one.
Where did you get that lyric from? An 'actor out on loan' doesn't make sense in the context of the lyrics. 'Actor out alone' makes sense but in fact it's 'an actor all alone' that I hear him sing (as in alone on stage or on set). It might be influenced by Shakespeare who wrote 'all the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players'. Having heard him repeat it at the end of the song, it does sound more like 'actor out on loan'. Now I don't know.
Thank you!
Was about to write an angry comment about the "family will die" not being "memory will die", while referring people to 'The Collected Works of Jim Morrison' book for proof.
@@heliotropezzz333 It, in fact, IS "An actor out on loan". In the Golden age of Hollywood, actors weren't free agents like they are today, they were signed by a particular studio to make movies for them, and they didn't necessarily get to pick and choose which movies they made either. They were signed to studios like MGM, Warner Brothers, Paramount, RKO, etc, and that was their employer. Studios would sometimes loan out an actor to one of the other studios, maybe as part of some deal, or maybe there was a producer or director who really wanted a particular actor for a role, there were various reasons why an actor would be "out on loan" from his studio employer. Morrison had been living in Hollywood and had once gone to film school at UCLA, so it seems fairly certain he would've been familiar with the term.
@@dggydddy59 o.k. Thanks for the info.
The real thing - a Doors classic. They put a mike out of the window during a storm.
Oh man…pausing in the middle of a solo. Breaks the mood
Brad's more concerned about subs and donations. He's no music lover.
The session for this song was the last time Jim Morrison was known to have sung before his death. While in Paris he told Ray Manzerek, the keyboard player, that he was looking forward to coming back and playing “Riders” live for an audience. However, he never came home.
I went to a gig the other day. The ticket stated 'the doors open at 7pm'. I didn't even know they were still performing
😬
r/dadjokes
The Doors don't open... they Headline!
lol
I go to a lot of gigs and, as a huge fan of The Doors, this thought often goes through my mind when I look at the show times. There's an excellent tribute act still around though and you should definitely check them out. They are 'The Doors Alive'. Æ 🙏
This was a massive hit around 1972....and it still holds up so well more than 50 years later. 👍🤗🤪
This version is sped up. How odd.
I will say this was the first song I tried to recreate on my Mom's Keyboard when those advanced ones came out with drums, record-able parts for playback, etc. leaving me to play the base key fills with one hand and the other free to hit buttons, recalling parts I previously saved. Pretty cool. (a step up from her Lowrey Magic Genie 98)
I was like why does this sound so bad?
It's between 1/4 & 1/2 note too high, just sounds "off"!
Doors could do many different styles of music. This one is jazzy and the instrumental is not 'to' long!
thank you for commenting on the "to"
I think their trying to show there humor and failing
ua-cam.com/video/XFmHEVtUh5k/v-deo.html
Riders On The Storm is a timeless classic from 1971. I agree with Hong Fang - the Doors musical style was wide.
Yeah that comment annoyed me too.
one of the greatest keyboard solos of all time on a rock record. this is more like jazz than rock. "This too long?" No way! This is real music, progressive rock/jazz. Surely you must more patience than a protozoa's brain.
Agreed! Certain musical ideas require some time to express. Also....I just have to say this since I don't see it written anywhere else...the song was released in the LATE 1960s when SO MANY people were experimenting with HALLUCINOGENS. One aspect of that drug group is that it can do STRANGE things to one's PERCEPTION of TIME (like slowing it down a lot). A long keyboard solo took people someplace (in their heads, man!).
Robby Krieger's guitar comping in the background is sublime as well!
One of the best singles in history! Reminds me of my teenage years in the early seventies.
Definitely the coolest Doors song. This one and "Crystal Ship" are probably my two favorites. And this is the perfect song to listen to on a rainy afternoon.
I always liked listening to it late at night. In the dark. Probably cause that's when I'd hear it the most on the radio, back in the '70s.
Crystal Ship has the absolute greatest lyric ever put on paper. “This is the strangest life I’ve ever known”.
@@livinglegend3876 That line does not appear in any of the lyrics to Crystal Ship.
@@LynnThompsonAuthor you are right. I was thinking of the song “Waiting For The Sun”. Don’t mind me, I get a little confused here in my autumn years.
Crystal ship 'Doors finest moment
Saw them in Seattle live on a Pier. Ian Astbury sang for them. They played this song as the sunset over the ocean and the sky was purple, orange, red, blue, black all swirled together. Gorgeous sky. Very religious experience as they played this song...I will never forget that moment, even after death.
ua-cam.com/video/XFmHEVtUh5k/v-deo.html
Saw them with Ian in so . Cal.
The Doors are the greatest Rock band ....ever! No other band is quite on their level
I saw them at the same tour in Philadelphia...... incredible !
@@shootermav11 i really loved the way Ian let the band shine. He was there just to be the catalyst to bring forth the vocals. The band really was on point and was just outstanding.
Not the doors if Morrison wasn’t singing
This is probably my favorite of the Doors songs. I love the background storm sounds in it as well how great of a composition it was. They don't make music like they use by in large.
It sucks that the audio is so bad. This song is legendary.
Yes, this IS particularly sucky audio quality!!
Sounds a little fast too. No?
@@michaeldinkowitz8505 I was actually looking for this comment. It also sounds to me like it's been sped up a bit.
Definitely sped up.
Yep.
The Doors did an amazing variety of music, but it all has something special going on. This is my favorite, simply because I think it exemplifies the greatest strengths of each of the members of the Doors - Jim Morrison's voice and the poetry of his lyrics, Ray Manzarek's genius on keyboards, Robby Krieger's guitar, and the simple but perfect drumming of John Densmore.
Who played the bass?
@@SvenTviking, I read somewhere they used keyboard mainly for a bass sound. Not sure though.
@@SvenTviking Usually Ray - via his keyboards
Brad & Lex, Their "Love Her Madly" and "Love Me Two Times" are next for you!!
Soul Kitchen and Crystal Ship.
Peace Frog and Love Street
The problem with fan made lyric videos is that they often get them wrong. "Like a dog without a bone, an actor out on loan." Not an actor out alone. That said, an all time classic. Never get tired of hearing it. That keyboard from Manzarek is both jazzy and funky without being jazz funk.
"This is to long" during the keyboard solo - not only is it misspelled, but a horrible take on that part of the song.
It always amazes me when people take the trouble to make a lyric video but are too lazy and/or stupid to check the actual lyrics. :/
Pink Floyd's song "Echoes" .. the 23+min epic on their studio album "Meddle" would be quite the reaction to see from ya both 😁🤟🎸
This song and Light My Fire are probably the 2 most commercially successful Doors songs. They are probably the 2 most known songs to the casual fan of rock and roll, 60s-70s.
Hello I Love You and Light My Fire are their only number 1 hits
@@davidotto3731 Good to know. Just a guess but I think more people remember Riders on Storm than Hello I Love You but I could be wrong.
Break On Through?
@@davidotto3731 Not only. People Are Strange and Touch Me too. if you're talking about charts.
One of their best songs from their later efforts before Morrison passed. For another great Doors epic try When the Music's Over or The End, those are incredible tunes that will trip you out. Doors hypnotize 50+ years on. Enjoy! 🎹🎸🎶
'When the Music's Over' Live at the Bowl version is better than the studio version in my opinion. One of my favorite songs. The live version.
@@CAPTEINRIGGS The live taping version in black and white is THE best version, for the incredible performance, so focused, pure legendary perfection IMO.
Recently stumbled onto a UA-cam video that had audio of the Doors live at the Whiskey. Worth seeking out.
Brad and Lex have already done The End.
Your parents or grandparents may have listened to this when you were little. I don't believe anyone has ever even tried a remake. It's perfect. Moody Blues would put you in the same laid back mood this does
snoop dog made it!
Lex has a good ear for this kind of music. The Doors played a kind of jazz/blues fusion, very much in line with Lex's "speakeasy vibe." Also, Morrison (the singer and songwriter) was a hardcore alcoholic, so there's that. Ray Manzarek's brilliant keyboard work made Morrison's incredible poetry into songs that stick in your head long after you hear them. The band was known for their eclectic jam-style sets. Or so I've read; I'm too young to have seen them in person.
Lex is spot on here, it's so jazzy. It's got a very "dimly lit, smoky club with your favourite whisky, whiskey or bourbon" feel to it for sure. A "hot toddy" fits too, as that's basically whisky or bourbon with hot water, honey and lemon. Maybe some additional spices if you want. Pretty simple and tasty.
Now you just need to react to "Touch Me" and you two will have gotten to the three songs that wore out at least two cassettes of "The Doors: Greatest Hits" on my walk to school in the 80s. I would rewind Riders, The End and Touch Me to listen to them at least 2-3 times before letting the cassette play on in my Walkman.
I woke up one morning to my radio-alarm clock to catch my bus ride to high school when this came out. It was forever imprinted on my spiritual memory. I am forever blessed by the impact of this song.
♥️ when my son was about 10, he went through a phase of singing this in the shower. It was so cute he sounded so serious like, sometimes the rest of us would stand outside the bathroom door to listen a minute and smile at each other😍
When this first hit the airwaves people were calling it "cocktail music", due to Ray Manzarek's dreamy keyboard playing. Now of course, people see the darkness in the song. Jim Morrison released an alternate version on his album "An American Prayer", that expands on the "there's a killer on the road" verse. Very interesting.
"The End" just makes me feel sorry for Jim Morrison's parents.
I thought it was Paul Rothchild who said that and not people.
@@CAPTEINRIGGS yeah this dude is just making up facts. This album was portrayed as their “comeback” album, due to the fact that the doors were shunned everywhere due to morrisons legal case. Only person who called it cocktail music was their ex producer paul rothchild, he then left them to produce the album themselves.
It was produced by bruce botnick, needless to say paul rothchild ate his own words when he heard the final product and saw how successful the album came to be, its a masterpiece!
Yes - that 1st engineer quit
TYPO: *Meant the 1st PRODUCER quit - calling the demo sessions 'cocktail music' - maybe in part referring to Ray's elec piano; Man, was he wrong.
Ray Manzarek is just an awesome keyboardist....he lifted the band up so much!!
Great classic rock! It's a spiritually oriented song ... as souls, we enter this world of storm.
I've been a Doors fan since the early 70's. Great reaction
A great example of how the producer and engineer can make a song great. A little echo on the electric piano and tremolo on the guitar makes it dreamy and mysterious.
I've gotta agree with D H; Ray Manzarek's organ solo superb; it was so well constructed, it builds, ascends, and concludes, just beautifully, and his combination of thematic elements in the right hand, and chord progressions, was phenomenal.
One of THEE greatest (American) bands EVER; Luv watchin these 2 (especially Lex's visual reactions!!!)
One of my favorite Doors tunes along with Love Street and The End.
Probably my favorite lyric "Can you picture what will be, So limitless and free" from The End
This was sampled by Snoop Dogg I think
This is over 50 years old. The sound is timeless.
I love the whispered words that back the singing all through this song gives it a a air of mystery
Thank you for this review! I was 17 in 1971 when this song was on radio ! I will never forget the impact it had om me being a doors fan! Just good times and the best to you!
I absolutely love this song! The introduction is so smooth. I wish there was a music video; so that I could watch it! Great upload.
I take your point but it would depend on the video. Some people will create a new video for a song and be too literal with the visuals. As if we don't know what the song is describing! They come off as corny and unimaginative!
@@Zebred2001; I agree! 💯
ua-cam.com/video/XFmHEVtUh5k/v-deo.html
THERE IS A VIDEO OF THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song was used in several movies and commercials.
Well it's about time...That's Jerry Scheff on bass. He played for Elvis.
It’s a total vibe! But this version sounds sped up. Which takes that laid back beat and sends it into a groove that will send you tripping, even if your straight sober. Amazing band!!
It does sound sped up a bit.
Cool reaction. Thank you. Like others - I have my own Doors' wish list: Waiting For The Sun, The Crystal Ship & Five To One are all fantastic songs you haven't yet heard. I hope you do some day. Thanks again for the reaction.
Hey y'all, back in the '70's and early '80's some of the rock stations would play bands like this for hours on end late at night! This would usually be on Fridays or Saturdays and would always be late (after midnight) and you could just sit and listen and really get into their music. This was always different than hearing it played on the radio during the day! Great reaction!
As always, great reaction by Brad and Lex!
This is my favorite Doors song. I use to listen to it all the time on a 45 rpm record. Yea, I know that that's dating myself.😁 The vocals are fairly simple but the piano and guitar made the song great. Let's not forget the drummer who did the wonderful thunder sound effects! You really can't go wrong with the Doors.
What did Densmore do regarding the thunder sound effects?
@@dggydddy59 I really have no idea. I just assumed that it was done by the drums. If not I guess it was special effects.
@@StevenEverett7 OK, I thought you knew something I didn't. The rain and thunder effects came from sound effect tapes owned by their record label, so they just mixed that into the final mix. One thing most people don't know is that Morrison's whispered vocals underneath his lead vocal is the last thing he ever recorded. A lot of people don't even realize that the entire lead vocal is also being whispered under it until you tell them, then suddenly they go Oh Wow I never noticed that before!!
@@dggydddy59 Thanks. I learned something new! Just goes to show I shouldn't 'assume'. 😉
I love that Morrison whispered the vocals in the background, really added to the mood.
This track is its own movie. Absolutely legendary!
This was my elder brothers music. And it became my music, now it is your music. Later generations are going do adopt this music and feel it too. 60-70-80's music is forever.
God I love The Doors. Their lyrics are some of the hardest to figure out which isn't surprising bc Jim Morrison was a super weirdo and was on one drug or another most of the time. This song is so cool. It's got such a jazzy vibe to it. You guys should watch the movie "The Doors" where Val Kilmer plays Jim Morrison. Great movie and so insightful to thier story.
if a 150 iq is weird, ok, i guess this is weird... its symbolist poetry. much like blake.
@@kelvinkloud What does IQ have to do with it. I'm saying based on societal norms of the day he had an odd personality. I love it though. Being a weirdo doesn't mean something bad and isn't an insult.
That bassline though. Whoever made this lyric video obviously was hearing it for the first time though
Genius bassline. Not the usual Manzarek keyboard bass either. I believe it was played by session player Larry Knechtel, who later joined Bread.
It was Jerry Scheff, who was Elvis' bass player, on bass here.
@@gj8683 OK, glad to know! Thanks!
The late great Ray Manzarek on keys, the greatest rock keyboardist of all time.
This song never fails to put a smile on my face. Perfect for a late-night drive.
One of the most Beautiful songs. Especially in the fall and past midnight
"Totally scratch my hippie itch" I love it. Gotta remember that.
One of the Doors' true masterpieces.
East meets West...Classical and Jazz chops with a little Oriental feel and Taoism meets the Inner Paths of the West.
Driving home from work late one night, driving down a winding canyon road in a rain storm when this song came on, it was appropriate and eerie. Made me smile and turn it up. I always like the eeriness to the lyrics which is due to Jim Morrison laying down a track with singing the vocals, then he went back and did vocals again whispering, it is laid over the original vocal track, if you listen close you can hear both
I love her reactions. She’s full of wonder and curiosity. Open to musical experiences. Brad is almost the opposite. Somewhat reserved and deliberate. They work together well. Giving Brad some love. I’ve seen a few comments about his so-called cluelessness. Haters hate.
One interesting fact about the Doors is the guitar player, organist, and drummer started out in radically different genres. The guitarist played flamenco, the organ player was a classical pianist, and the drummer was a jazz musician. Jim Morison was a film student at UCLA. Also there is no bass player. That role is filled in by the organ player.
One of the (if not the) smoothest songs ever.
"Scratch my hippie itch". Lex, you always make me smile.
Spooky and mysterious song in 1971 and still today.
It's unbelievable how good the music was back in the 1960's. I'm not really a fan of 'Acid Rock', but I really like this one. There are so many songs from that time that are just beautiful to listen to. One song I have on my playlist is "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf.
Jim’s voice is so unique.
Not the biggest Doors fan, but this song rules. Total atmosphere.
Lex got her groove on. I remember hearing this song on a.m. radio my grandmother had playing on top of the fridge, oddly though I didn't get into the doors until much lat in my life but Jim's voice absolutely grabbed my attention. Was still a child but it got my attention great voice. Listen to touch me and love her madly great songs great singing.
"scratch my hippy itch" fantastic explanation of this song.
Celebration of the Lizard by The Doors is my favorite song of all time. Pure poetry and theater embedded in music.
In the 70’s whenever it was a rainy day the top 40 AM radio stations played this incessantly
This song sounds so mysterious because, if you listen closely, you'll hear Jim Morrison doubling the lead vocal with a whisper.
Timeless tune. Rock on Brad & Lex
My favorite Doors song. I had the biggest crush on Jim Morrison. Sadly he joined the 27 yr old death club, with Janis Joplin, Hendrix, too many to name. Died so young. ❤
This song accompanied the highest peak of the heaviest acid trip I ever went on. Good times... really good times.
The vibe is sitting around the living room with 10 of your best friends passing around a bong while tripping on mushrooms listening to Jim spin poetry.
Lex was lost in the sauce on this one. This has to be The Doors most perfect song, music, lyrics and sound effects combined.
This inspired a great movie with Rutger Hauer - The Hitcher, 1986;
He says into this world we're thrown or something similar. Jim Morisson read philosophy I think it's a nod to Heidegger's idea of 'thrownness' (Geworfenheit)
Good movie with a great chilling performance from Rutger Hauer.
Damn both of you for "stealing" my comment, lol! I love that movie, and Hauer was so effective in his performance. Scary as hell. Come to think of it, I suppose that's another movie that could be held up as an example of how to subvert the expectations of the audience in a proper manner, instead of the "deconstruction for it's own sake" sort of tripe we see today. I really should give it another watch; it's been maybe 20 years. The young woman in it was excellent too, was that Jennifer Jason Leigh?
@@iDEATH Yes I'm pretty sure that was the actress. She did a good job too.
Rutger is one of the greatest actors imo... R.I.P.
It has a good main theme for music too, The Hitcher.
Wasn't Hitcher also a C. Thomas Howell movie ? He had a group of good ones back then.
@@andymullarx6365 You're right! I'd forgotten that. I really like Howell, but I think he has a problem saying "no" to work sometimes, lol.

"How do you sample this? Into a rap song, that seems tough."
I sampled this. lol I took bar of the baseline from the beginning where the rhodes had a particular hit (I think at 0:54 on this video), looped it, then played my own rhodes over it, added some kick/snare boom bap, and a bop is born. I did it like 25 years ago and the beat is on a disk in storage. But it exists.
Those Rhodes are amazing. I got to help restore one at one point a few years back. There's nothing like em
Snoop Dogg actually used the song. It's even titled Riders on the storm.
@@fightingforlife1211 Yeah, it's a nice interpolation. They sampled his voice with a crazy highly mastered track (I don't know how they got their hands on that), but replayed the music. Sounds nice though. But I'm clinging to the fact I did it almost a decade earlier. lol

That little girl really likes that song! Adorable!
Not only does he sing the song, he also whispers it in the background. You can't unhear it now.
I listened this song many times in last 25 years and newer seen lyrics until now, and I see that I all the time hear wrong this part : "Sweet memory will die" , I always heard "Sweet family will die"
Jim is singing over his whispering the whole song.
Brad and Lex have such great chemistry- I’m always entertained by their reactions and vibe energy
I was born in the late 1950s and into this world I was thrown. The 1960s is often referred to as "The 1960s as the decade of changed." As for the change in music it is referred to the "Music Explosion." To truly enjoy the music from this error you have to be living during this time. Sometimes I wish I had a time machine that would transport me back intime. Brad & Lex your reaction videos are some of my favorites, I do not know how many times I have watched your reaction to "Riders on the Storm." Lex, I think you would really enjoy traveling back to the 1960s and San Francisco, while wearing the cloths from this time and just enjoying and getting lost listening to the music.
I would always do the "air Keyboard" on that solo part Ray Manzarek went to town...Best keyboardist ever.
I'm not a die-hard Doors fan like many here, although I do like many of their songs. But I can listen to this one on repeat! So chill!
Brad, another place you may have heard the song is on an episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia". They mentioned on their podcast they weren't sure if they would be able to get it. But they did, and it's one of the most expensive songs they've used on their show.

A hot toddy is a drink used to fight colds and flu. My Grandfather gave me his recipe and I swear by it. In a mug, pit 2 teaspoons sugar, 2 teaspoons honey, 2 teaspoons lemon juice, 4 teaspoons whiskey and fill it up with hot water. Drink it before bed. It always works for me.
Sweet memory will die; what I'd always thought was said from listening to the song, but have seen "sweet family will die", and now I can't un-hear that.
"What's a peaceful storm?" Classic Brad question.

The Doors made a groovy Hammond Organ solo cool, I can't deny it.
The End is a must listen.
They reacted to that one not too long ago!
